seriously its too old now.
>>

It's only as hard as the software makes it. Try using something that prides itself on simplicity. Also, it's not "outdated", it works perfectly well.

Also, setting up most web servers is anything but simple and straightforward.

PHP and Wordpress: Die in a fire

ATX, ITX, w/e tower computers need to die

Java, anything that requires you to install a VM to "just werk on all platforms"

Most Javascript frameworks

Sass and Haml

Responsive design... media queries... bootstrap... seriously this is fucked up, we need different solutions to create sites which adapt to viewport without writing hundreds of extra lines of code just to make sure it displays correctly on all devices, especially when there is a fuckton of different browsers on the market (including IE) with different implementations

Unix mail is local user mail by default. You should know this.
>>
>>51310018
Most home users don't need that level of computing power to justify building a tower, imo.

And just generally, technology has advanced so much it's awkward to still see that huge box format on a desktop or next to a desk, just to be able to run an OS and browser the web or play games.

Heck, I find it hard to justify owning a discrete GPU if you don't do heavy gaming or CAD/3D modelling. And if you don't need a discrete GPU why would you even need a tower... A NUC + large monitor / laptop / Intel compute stick + TV should do fine for most tasks.

It's just getting harder and harder to justify owning a tower, which needs maintenance (dust), separate cooling for different components, big power source, etc. Idk doesn't quite match this century, t b h f-a-m.

It's how email started and it makes perfect sense. Your user@domain email address is derived from domain!user, which was used for the original unix-to-unix-copy email system. This can be kept local or forwarded to other networks, which is a nice abstraction.

ATX computers are still used heavily in industry as they are cheap and widely available even though embedded systems are more and more common. Especially in industries working with machines from 90s and early 2000s.
Worked in large format printing company for almost 2 years now and we had machine that run 2 ATX motherboards from 1998 with debian etch installed and 2 SCSI disk. Machine itself was maybe 4 years old.

Yeah it does make perfect sense. [email protected]
Isn't an email address but a user account on a system. But this doesn't scale very well. There's much more overhead with total user accounts. This is why postfix supports virtual delivery aliases. Idk how that works because I haven't had to mess with it. Email systems like postfix have all of the infrastructure to facilitate "modern" use.

Although I'm sure most of the headache people experience with self-hosted email is probably ISPs like comcast blocking traffic on port 25. Configuring postfix is not much more difficult than configuring Apache. Its hard and frustrating though when you go to test it and the point of failure is on the ISP end. It's basically invisible. I found myself using NC to diagnose the port blockage and that was such a hassle. Even then, I the solution was to configure postfix to relay mail through an ssh tunnel to get around the draconian dam on port 25.

So yeah, I'd say it's not that email systems are outdated, but ISPs and others would much rather you use their email systems and as such put obstacles in the way to discourage home hosting.

Home Computers

Everything can be done through a cloud service. no need for the general public to have so much computer power at home.
Much like how guns are no longer needed in the home, the home computer needs to go the way of the dinosaur.

Ever tried to compile from source on a normal laptop without it overheating?

Hell, I could cook an egg running make install on most things

besides, having more power to run high screen resolutions, multitask using those screens (multiple HD videos and work spaces), and being able to actually replace your parts without breaking your fucking computer is all conviences that "most home users" are going to find far more useful than a laptops few pros.

>run out of it
We won't run out, we'll gradually come to a point where it costs more to extract and process than its worth, and then we'll move on to whatever is most economically feasible, but we won't "run out".

There's just no reason to now besides preparation for that day. Oil is so abundant right now that oil rich countries are losing out on tons of revenue because oil is near 40$ a barrel instead of 80-100 that it was 5-10 years back.

The benefit of the huge box next to the desk is that I can easily pull out a part if it's failed. I wouldn't want to have to replace my laptop's cooling fan or GPU if one of them died.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I tried for 20 minutes to figure out how to turn off spaced for indentation and make the tab key actually insert a tab and got nowhere. Everything I've ever needed to do in VIM took me 5 minutes to figure out, except copying to the system clipboard.

In a meeting today the old lady in charge of purchasing announced we are getting brand new HD projectors in all our meeting rooms. Think great. Must be 1080 or maby 4k!

Nope asked and looked into the specific models 720....
