I need an OS for my netbook which will be used as a torrent box and storage server, with occasional firefox use. Which should I install?
Windows XP, Windows 10 LTSB, or some lightweight Ubuntu derivative?

OP I got the same netbook running eOS and it runs ok. The PATA SSD in it is shit though 8GB and very slow.

I got the same one too, the down arrow key doesn't work in linux do you have the same problem?
gentoo

I'm not him, but I don't have that problem when I use Lubuntu from a live USB.
>>51307792
Agreed. Lubuntu + I3.
>>51307780
OS X Snow Leopard
A debian based distro like ubuntu, lubuntu, or xubuntu. I suggest lubuntu though, but try them and if you like any give it a go. It literally takes 5 minutes to download a distro and 10 to install.
If you don't like linux, I think you can run windows 7.

How'd you get the wifi working?
Yeah, I'm kind of a dumb guy.
I'm a little disappointed I had to go editing files to disable tapping on the trackpad, but I haven't been successful getting wifi to work with Lubuntu on my Mini9.

Download Lubuntu 14.04.3 LTS x86 and burn it to a USB drive. Insert the USB into the new computer and press whatever buttons you have to at POST to boot from it. Connect the computer to the internet through ethernet and to a power source. Check 'nonfree' and 'install updates while installing' and install.
After installation finishes and reboots, run "software updater" update and reboot again. Now, go to Preferences->Additional Drivers, let it run for a while and then select any proprietary drivers you may need for wifi. Apply and reboot.
If you still don't have a wifi icon on your desktop, go to Preferences->Default Applications for LXSession->Autostart and type "nm-applet" into the Manual Autostarted Applications field and click the + icon. Disconnect the ethernet cable and reboot.
Launch firefox, turn off telemetry ("choose what I share"), and open a new tab, click the gear icon and turn off "suggested sites" (ads). Install uBlock Origin and uMatrix. If you're lazy, stupid, or simply MUST HAVE Instagram you can skip uMatrix but the small hassle for whitelisting sites is well worth the speed increase. Page loads and render time decrease dramatically when every page hit isn't executing half a meg of js and an added bonus is it does away with jenky scrolling and those infuriating "other articles you might like" js modals. You can simply turn js back on for sites that have an * actual * reason to execute code on your box like ebay, amazon, and reddit (needed for upvote/downvote function).
In your case I would strongly recommend using Lubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager to install additional packages instead of the command line as it seems like a better fit for you. For games I recommend Playonlinux and Steam from the official repos, and Retroarch and EmulationStation though you will need to add ppa's for those.

my arrow keys work fine, didn't have to do anything special
>>51307780
arch linux
>>51308089
you probably don't need to reinstall, just follow below short version:
so yeah it's a kind of a multi-step problem,
first you need to run system update once while connected to internet in order to
-fix the bug from upstream where nm-applet doesn't start and
-to allow you the option of fetching the bcm4312 drivers
then you use additional drivers to download the bcm blob
and finally you add nm-applet manually if the software update didn't automatically fix it

Only the down arrow doesn't work, if I press fn + down arrow it does page down so its not broken.

Lubuntu or Xubuntu.
>Windows XP
Deprecated
>Windows 10 LTSB
Too heavy for that kind of machine. Also, botnet.
>>51308251
that is super fucking weird. It's been like that since you installed? anything other keys act funny?
>>51308251
Under system tools->system profiler->input devices, are there any differences from my pic?
>>51307780
That's better specs than the laptop I used as my main PC for the last 5 years.
Fedora with LXDE was the choice for me.

>>51307780
Get Debian for ease of driver support and slap on some lightweight window manager like openbox or something.
>>51308324
Dumb no-wifi-on-Mini9 guy here.
Xubuntu runs flawlessly right out of the box, but Lubuntu works better (wifi issue aside.) Or at least I'm able to play 720p videos on the latter.
>>51307780
debian without a DE
>>51308027
Just because you're using a linux distro, you don't neeed i3.
