Found a wireless FM mic hidden in my office today. Looks similar to this.

I'm not in a position with sensitive information, and while I think I know who the culprit is, I'd like to discover any other devices planted around our office. I've left this one in place, fed it some false information to see if it's acted upon. What tools do I need to preform a proper sweep against listening devices? I'm worried that some of these might be hardwired into things like our wall sockets and other places, and I don't want to rip out the entire office space and leave traces that I've been searching. I would prefer if I could find the devices and leave them in place so they can be logged by our head of security.

Sorry if this is the wrong board for the question, but the internet is full of bullshit on the topic and I couldn't find anything on the /g/ wiki.

sounds like you need a "bug detector"
>>
what type of work do you do?.

do you think it is a co worker?
>>
>>51306570
Almost certainly my current supervisor attempting to hold on to his job by catching my conversations. Other people have made accusations of knowing about stuff discussed between them and one other person, and I've got semi-proof that he's been reading the email of other employees, specifically our general manager.

I'm currently just a newer IT guy for this company, but I was hired on to replace this fellow eventually. This has caused him a great deal of stress, as he doesn't want to give up the position of head of IT.

>>51306564
I used to have an RF scanner, but I left it behind at my previous job some years ago. I also don't really have the experience in the field of detecting anything other than a wireless transmitter, so I wasn't sure if there was anything else I should be using to cover a larger range of bug types.
>>
>>51306678
Thats wild. so do you suspect that he listens in on convos using a radio?
>>
if its a radio transmitter, just find out what frequency it transmit at and drown it out with noise

better than looking for the fucking things
>>
>>51306873
and give it up?
op should record porn with a mini recorder/speaker, place it next to the mic, and watch with amusement as the supervisor barges in expecting to catch him in the act.

What can the supervisor do? admit he's bugged all the staff?
Have a little fun op.
>>
>>51306476
Just set up a hidden camera then stick some tape or cotton wool on the mic so that it'll seem defective and catch the guy who comes to service it.
>>
It's most likely your boss trying to make sure his slaves are working when he's not looking.
>>
>>51306832
I don't think he's actively listening in, but rather transmitting them to a recording device. Looking at the device itself, I don't think it would be broadcasting very far. I want to bet the recording device is either easy to physically access or transmits to a "legitimate" PC somewhere on our network. I've been slowly going through the results of a scan showing all devices' IP addresses on our network, but it's possible it's on a disjoint network.

I didn't put much stock into things until our meetings started addressing specific issues I'd bitch about to other staff members. I did occasional looking around after that point, never turned up anything until this week. I did know about the email-reading for a long time, but technically there's no crime since all electronic communication is property of my company and there's no expectation of privacy. Since it's a government job as well, all of it is also public record, so anyone can write a request for it and have it given to them within a reasonable timeframe.
>>
Find a new job.
>>
>>51306911
I highly doubt that. I get in to a hell of a lot less trouble when I sit and browse 4chan all day. Our conflicts arise from me taking initiative and implementing new ideas or simply fulfilling requests (John needs a new PC since his is about to bite the dust, Linda needs her printer repaired because it can't maintain a connection, our database needs several additional fields and some new functions, etc.).

Strangely enough, not working is fine and dandy, by doing work, he's not getting a say in how jobs are getting done.

I work in SIG INT and I can confirm you're dead.

If you can find out what frequency it's transmitting on, you may be able to find the rest.

Aquire small FM radio - heaps of smart phones have a radio inbuilt, just need to use headphones.

Then play a known song near the transmitter you have and go through the frequencies on your own radio. If it's in the FM band you should hear your music being transmitted over FM, to your phone.

Chances are the other transmitters will be transmitting around this frequency.

Another option, given time with a quiet office environment is to go through the fm band looking for areas with no static. Then disable the devices temporarily as you find them.

A picture would help to identify the circuit, if it's a commercial device, and figure out what range of frequencies it's capable of.

I'll try this out. I'm pretty sure it's an FM transmitter, but I didn't fiddle with the device as I didn't want to leave evidence of tampering, or worse, get my fingerprints on the device. I have a cheap $15 antenna I had brought to try and fiddle with SDR once, maybe if it's on a different frequency, I can use that to isolate the signal?
>>
>>51306904
Do this op, Jesus. I can imagine the look on his face as he runs in and you're just sitting there doing your job.
>>
if you're 100% sure its a bug why not take it to your bosses boss?

If its legit(as in placed with reason)you just look like you aware

If it was placed without reason you catch out your boss and get his job quicker.
>>
>>51306476
take pictures of the device. document it. you work at a government job dude come on. there's no way to know what frequency from the information you currently know
>>
OP, post a pic of it and I'll try and figure out what frequency its on.
>>
>>51307045
If you have an SDR device you can use the waterfall display to find nearby radio transmitters - not just limited to the FM band. This would be a silent and efficient way of doing it :)
>>
what's wrong, op, got something to hide?

IRL BOTNET

>in my office
If I were you, I'd call the police.
Let them deal with it.
Whoever put it there, it's likely illegal.
>>
Also OP, if you want to do the nuclear option, take a magnetron out of an old microwave. Point it away from you, then turn it on and go around the room running it over every surface. 100% guarantee that this will cook any receiver.

If it's from who I think it is, then losing a job will be the least of his worries. Unauthorized listening of a conversation between two parties is a felony that can punished by up to 10 years in prison.

The problem is, I'm not sure that this isn't a frame up job. Other people have it out for the guy, and while I'd like nothing more than to get him out of the picture, I want to find out who it really is. Head of Security could be a possible candidate for placing a false bug, as could a number of other directors in the place. I'd hate to turn this in and find out I've been played and sent an actual innocent man off, no matter how big of asshole he is.

>Unauthorized listening of a conversation between two parties is a felony that can punished by up to 10 years in prison.

In my state, that is: http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PE/htm/PE.16.htm#16.02
>>
>>51307199
then call the fucking police
any 'detective' work you do will only hinder investigations, and could shift some blame to you for not reporting it
>>
>>51306873
Yes, and get an FCC fine in the process.
>>
>>51307246
I suppose I'll have to. It's going to strain things at work, as we have LEOs on staff for this sort of thing, but I can't be sure one of them didn't have a hand in this. Need a neutral third party.
>>
>>51307268
Please report back what happens.
I'm curious.
>>
>>51307288
Gonna be a while. I'll probably start the reporting to the cops next week, see what happens after that. I know a few guys in the local sheriff's office, but it's a small enough county they're going to have to call somewhere else to get someone to sweep the place.

I had tried feeding the bug false information (Had a meeting with someone, mentioned details about various plans in the works, waited to see what the actions were), but nothing was acted upon.
>>
>>51306476
SDR dongle will do ya
>>
Alternatively if you dont feel like filing a police report you could just contact your boss's boss. That kind of shit could get him fired right off the bat.
"My manager is placing recording devices in my office without any of our consent or knowledge and I do not feel comfortable working in this environment." something along the lines of that. if he doesnt do anything just call the cops

In most states in the USA, it is not illegal for your employeer to record your activities in the work place, that includes video and sound recording, keylogging devices on the computers that belong to the employer as well as phones and what not.

You don't know if his boss was the one who put it there and if he did, it isn't necessarily illegal. Conversation between two parties bullshit, he is in the workplace and as such his boss is entitled to record him, of course laws differ from state to state, before you get the police involved, go to a fucking lawyer and before you cross your boss for doing something that may be legal, that he may be aware of, if he isnt aware of it you will be made to look bad because you went to the police instead of him.

Lawyer the fuck up, get some legal advice, then proceed.
>>
>>51307796

Reason I know it is legal to record, worked for this backstabbing bitch, she watched and listened the activities in her store from her other job at her desk, it is creepy as fuck, people say oh it has to be illegal. Checked local laws, it is legal in most of the country, any communication done on equipment paid for by the employer can be legally monitored.
>>
>>51306678
>I've got semi-proof that he's been reading the email of other employees
Which he's legally entitled to do. Welcome to the land of the free.
>>
>>51306904
Don't do this, the speaker is incriminating. Instead, broadcast the audio on the same frequency if it's a simple FM transmitter rather than Bluetooth.

How do you know there aren't cameras also hidden that have captured you your current search and findings?

Shit could be serious. If they have been watching you could end up dying in some "random house fire" or some shit. If you get a package 'gist' containing an Nvidia graphics card avoid temptation and DO NOT INSTALL it.
