Deselect "Debian desktop", it's an a virtual package that selects GNOME.
Select Xfce for the best out of box experience.

Don't do Cinnamon. When I was using Debian as my DD back in December, I gave cinn a shot and it's like 18 billion versions old.
They're all shit besides MATE (that's pronounced MAH-TEH for the tea) in my opinion.
I don't like MATE either. So, you should install Ubuntu if you have 32GB of RAM with a Skylake, or whatever that i7 does these days.
I'm using Windows 10 with a Core2Duo and 2GB RAM because I tired of upgrading at one point. I'll probably end up with a very expensive Macintosh computer in the future when I'm on Mars.
I hope Velcro is fashionable upon the tongue of a sneaker when I get there.

I run debian with xfce with those same specs.
Idle ram usage is never more than 170MB.

You know, I'll probably install that soon. I like the sound of it on my CPU.
None. Install a wm you dumbass
If you're installing Debian it must be a server so you don't need any DE.
Surely you aren't stupid enough to install Debian on a desktop computer, are you?

I used it on a laptop for a while. Very comfy os. Although mint kde/xfce or x/kubuntu are better for usabillity for the average joe shmoe.
