Recommend me a tiling WM.

i3
>>

bspwm
(if you plan to use it for high resource things then go for i3, this wm shits itself)
>>
>>51293861
dwm, it's a lot of fun
>>
>>51293861

Enjoy your insecure programs.

Maybe a dumb question but do any tiling WMs look like that OOTB?

I mean I would like to install i3 or awesome or whatever the hot shit is right now and have it look like that, neatly arranged with a niceish theme
>>
>>51295108
>intentionally wasting screen space
>>
>>51295157
neatly arranged? that's what titling wms fucking do: they auto arrange like that.
>>
>>51293861
i3
sane defaults
easy to configure
easy to use
>>
>>51295178
Is it easy to switch my current vanilla Xubuntu install to use i3?
What do you recommend?
>>
How do I set i3 to always expand windows to full screen and have a taskbar with window names on bottom instad of desktops? I'm using it on a tiny netbook
>>
herbstluftwm
Its pretty nice, very easy to configure and change layouts on the fly. Very good multi screen support too.
>>
>>51293861
What's the font used in pic?
>>
>>51295240
fucking google it retard

dwm

He's using C++, he's fucked anyway even if he doesn't see it yet.
>>
>>51293861
Windows Explorer is a tiling window manager. Perhaps not what you want though op?
>>
>>51295160
>wanting to be unable to see which window is which
>>
>>51295281
Set layout to tabbed or fullscreen in the config. No idea about the second

>>51293861
i3 is the fukken best. If you wanna tinker a little bit more with configs (read: rice 4 lyfe) then choose bspwm.
>>
How do I remove borders on windows that aren't floating in i3?
>>
>>51296453
for_window [class="^.*"] border pixel 0
why tho? borders are cool
>>
>>51295852
why so hostile
>>
>>51293861
If you want productivity and nothing else i3
If you want productivity and some customization dwm
If you want to hack that shit to hell and beyond dwm
>>
bspwm
>>
>>51296044
Either you're a ricer using gaps or you're using it for productivity without gaps and a colored border to see which window is in focus
>>
>>51296490
If i'm using firefox sometimes i move the cursor to the edge of the screen and scroll there
And it doesn't work
Also that will remove borders for windows that are floating as well...

I'm using it with, like, 2px gaps. It's pretty cool to see, especially if I got a couple of terminals with transparency on it, and it's not too obnoxious when it comes to the productivity. In fact, there's an option where you can ignore away all the borders when a there's only one window on the current desktop.
>>
>>51296738
how do you get borders working on i3gaps?
>>
>>51296778
why shouldn't they?
The titles on windows are taboo in i3gaps, not the borders, AFAIK
>>
I'm using awesome
>>
Installed i3, booted into it and then sperged out when it said do you want to set up a configuration and pressed ESC
Is there a way to restart that dialog or do I just autoremove and reinstall?
>>
Ok restarted i3 and it asked me again
And now the usual Xubuntu mouse cursor is just going round and round
Wtf where are my apps
>>
>>51297037
run i3-config-wizard

I3/awesome
>>
>>51293861
What font is that
>>
I really liked XMonad back when I was into tiling window managers.
>>
Fuck you faggots who said i3

I just logged out of it and when I tried going back to Xfce, all the fonts were the same fucked up size that they were in i3

Fuck this shit, no wonder no one uses this tiling crap, it's written by fuckwits who program shit that fucks up your settings
>>
>>51297217
kek what a retard
adjust them in the settings u fgt
>>
>>51297217
rekt idiot
>>
>>51296803
as soon as i set a border i get weird stuff at the top where the d-menu is. random colored pixels. the github says something about this aswell.
>>
>>51297265
>>51297266
I have fixed it, it's just stupid that it needs to fuck up xfce's settings instead of just playing nice

makes you wonder if linux can ever be ready for the desktop with chucklefucks like that for programmers, and chucklefucks like you who use it

>>
bspwm is awesome. I've heard good things about dwm. xnomad too, but it seems to be better for people who already know Gaskell or are trying to learn it.
>>
>>51297217
can't handle tiling, keep trying sir you'll get there eventually
>>
>>51299110
It's my first time dude, can't help it when shit goes wrong on a first try
>>
>>51299165
That's why you should use it longer then couple hours, use it and optimize it.
>>
Xmonad
>>
emacs
>>
>>51295281
>have a taskbar with window names on bottom instad of desktops

That is pointless, the windows can't be minimized
>>
>>51296738
How'd you get that toolbar? Is the calendar clickable?
>>
>>51293861
Anyone know which ressource manager is that ?
>>
>>51299400
looks like htop
>>
>>51296738
How do you get your topbar like that?

post config pls
>>
>>51299400
htop
>>
>>51293930
this! Been using it for along time and it's great!
>>
Hmm, I've been using Awesome for years, but this bspwm does look nice...
>>
>>51299542
>>51300050
Thx guys
>>
>>51297303
weird, did not get anything similar. Do you use i3status or some kind of a bar replacement?/
I use i3blocks.
>>51299366
the calendar is not clickable, although I could make it so. Just do not want shit appearing around if I click on a wrong spot. The toolbar is i3blocks. I use it because it supports pango markup, so it lets the user specify background and foreground of their "blocks". The icons are fontawesome, there's a guide somewhere on github on how to download and specify it as one of fallback fonts somewhere in a .conf. Did it long ago, already forgot the details, but that's nothing a quick googling shouldn't handle.
http://sprunge.us/RgWX
here's my i3blocks.conf
http://sprunge.us/SFKS
here's my .i3/config
someday will make a dotfiles folder in my github. But, according to my laziness, that day hasn't come yet
>>
>>51299165
Been using i3 and nothing else for 4 weeks now feels good. You'll get the hang of it after a while.
