hey linuxfags, how can i open a large (500MB-1.7GB) .png image on linux? gimp crashes, gnome image viewer crashes. photoshop opens the images just fine in winblows. this is on an x64 ubuntu box with 12GB of memory.
How much swap do you have?
>>51293142
Wine + photoshop cs2
>>51293155
why would i need swap?
>>51293142
Sounds like a swap problem, presumably you didn't think you needed any because you didn't think about it hard enough. The only reason it worked on wangblows was because you had swap (pagefile, whatever).
>>51293200
That's where operating systems put this sort of thing.
>>51293201
if the os, the image program, and the image file fit into 1/4 of available ram, why do you need swap? not trolling, just want to understand.
>>51293209
Why does the OS use swap when he have 12 GB of RAM?
>>51293221
Because some programs, most notably image programs, won't load it all into ram even if there's enough.
I don't really know why, someone else might chime in.
>>51293257
I imagine it's because then there's no ram left for anything else.
>>51293142
Try shit like FEH or SXIV.
>>51293200
Swap is still recommended on high memory systems. Swappiness is configurable see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq#What_is_swappiness_and_how_do_I_change_it.3F

>Why does the OS use swap when he have 12 GB of RAM?
Linux is shitty. GNU is shitty.
Good news is that it's all open source so fix it yourself or shut your mouth privileged scumbag!
>>51293471
You really shouldn't declare shitty something about which you clearly know nothing at all. Tbqh.
Family.
