Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).

/g/ suggests:
> X220 for Small/Portable
> T420 for standard size

----
P50/70 release is imminent.
----

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Bumping ded thread.

Germanfag here, currently with an x200s WXGA+.

I can buy a T420s with 80gb mSata-SSD, 4GB Ram, new fan and the Full-HD display + adapter (not installed) in very good condition (except for the battery) for 450€, should I do it?

Where can I get the T420s-adapter at the moment? I missed the groupbuy in the german thinkpadforum and it seems I cant get the adapter otherwise :/

Hello friendos, I've been recently getting into the idea of getting an x tablet series, but I'm currently a bit confused.
People are cheering on for the x230T for the valuable specs and battery time, and the x201T for the old keyboard, the great aspect ratio and so on, but I've gotten nothing but regret from people who had invested in the x220T, what's exactly wrong with it compared to the two?

On the off chance someone can answer this: I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12 with Windows 10 on it. When I moved from 8.1 to 10, it stopped waking up from sleep when I open the lid.

When I close the lid it seems to sleep fine, and if I open the lid very shortly after I've closed it, it will wake normally. If I wait a few hours however, it will show a black screen and I'll need to hold the power button to hibernate it, and then hold the power button again to wake it up.

Anyone have experience with this issue?

Weird issue. I just tried closing the lid on my X300, waiting a while and then opening again, and it resumes just fine, and way faster than it ever did under Windows 7 or Windows XP. You'd think the older hardware would have trouble, but no.

Try checking out Lenovo's website. I remember seeing something listed with the Win 10 drivers labelled as "solve issues waking from sleep etc etc". It may be that the solution is very simple.
>>
>>51294406
nah its a software problem
>>
>>51296996
No, it most certainly is not. If I press at the top of the screen where the line starts then it flickers and/or goes away for a bit, then comes back.
>>
>>51295775
Do you have hybrid sleep on? It's probably trying to go to hibernate after a few hours of being off but failing.

If that's not it, there are a lot of bugs with the Intel DTPF driver on Windows 10 including failing to wake from sleep mode and the CPU getting stuck in its lowest power state after sleep.

The good chinese sellers will pay return shipping. You got ripped off.

There are other reasons not to buy Chinese screens-- most are reclaims/rebuilds and the glass matrix may be genuine, but that's not the most expensive part of a screen. The internal backlight films and polarizers are. Guess what the reclaims scrimp on....

Is a IBM Thinkpad Lenovo R61 Intel Core 2GHz Duo T7300 for 90-100 euros a good deal? Has anyone used the laptop before? I just want a laptop for on-the-go leightweight work.

I found it on ebay, and the seller seems to have a good record (but I don't have too much experience with ebay) - I'm critical, because it doesn't look like a bad deal. Is it maybe because the hard drive is only 80GB? Could it be replaced? It doesn't have a OS on it anyway, so I'm going to be using some lighter linux (Void with LXQt maybe?).

Not to say it's unusable, but there's a world of difference between a T61/T400 and a T420.

My T410s is more than good enough for just about anything that isn't gaymen. And that's with the base i5 processor.

A T400 is adequate for most things, and I would argue that's about as old as you should go. The questionable ones are the T60/T61. Especially the T61 since they had that added reliability issue.

Okay /tpg/, I have a serious question. Are ThinkPads just a meme? What I'm saying is: can I use a ThinkPad reliably for ~3 years without having to fix it. I also want to know: what is your opinion on the T420 and X220?
The T420 is bigger and has higher resolution which is better because I plan on using it standalone, but has a TN display which has poor viewing angles and is washed out. The track pad on the T420 is also marginally better, so if I can't find my mouse I can actually navigate.
The X220 is smaller and has a lower resolution, but has a IPS display. The smaller size makes it more portable but would not be good to use without a second monitor in most cases. The trackpad on the X220 is the first trackpad in the ThinkPad series to have combined buttons on the bottom which is a hindrance when trying to use it.
I plan on using headphones so sound is not an issue. I also plan on getting a hard drive caddy and using Arch on it. What kind of support does the T420 vs X220 have for Arch? Can I even boot from two hard drives separately? I also plan on getting a 9-cell battery so batter performance is not an issue either.
What are your opinions? Which ThinkPad do I have to maintain more and which one is more reliable?

tl;dr: Are ThinkPads a meme? Which is better: X220 or T420?
Image not related
>>
I got a few questions for fellow T420 owners who bought a non-OEM 9-cell. Which brand did you pick? How long does your battery last you?

The battery that came with my T420 is finally starting to die. Need to find a decent upgrade on eBay.
>>
>>51302163
What DE are you using? Looks tite.
>>
>>51302231
>can I use a ThinkPad reliably for ~3 years without having to fix it
Depends on how well you take care of it, and what condition you buy it in. The laptops are rugged and very solidly built, but nothing is indestructible.
The stock Seagate drives have a history of failure, so many end up replacing them with reliable SSD memory.
Otherwise, if there are any repairs needed, they're usually simple.

>what is your opinion on the T420 and X220
I'm a t420s user, which is basically a t420 but slimmer, smaller battery, USB 3.0 compatibility and a bit better build quality.
As a daily driver, the t4XX series is probably the best. Small enough to be portable, screen large enough to be used for almost all purposes, versatile enough to be used for almost all purposes.
If I was getting a laptop just for the portability, maybe a laptop just for IT work or school work, the X series would be a good choice.

As for the viewing angles on the TN display, yeah they aren't great, but it doesn't bother me. Usually the screen is stationary in my lap, I do not need to move the laptop screen about and view it from strange angles.

Really, you should be asking yourself
>am I looking for a daily driver? (t420)
>or something more utilitarian and portable? (x220)
>>

>>
>>51302353
Thanks, this actually makes my plans a lot more concrete. I will get a T420 and use a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD as the main hard drive in conjunction with the default Seagate hard drive in a caddy for extra storage. I have a few more questions if that's okay.

I plan on doing some light gaming as well (INB4 go back to /v/). Do games like Guacamelee! Gold Edition and The Binding of Issac: Rebirth run well? Should I upgrade my ram if that's the case?
Also, I plan on dual booting Windows 10 and Arch Linux. Can I boot Windows from the SSD and Arch from the caddy? Also, what kind of support do each of these OSes have for ThinkPads? What kind of drivers are available for Windows 10?
>>
>>51302538

>>
>>51302373
Up to 1866MHz DDR3 support too for even moe GPU punch. T420 is truly based.
>>
>>51302373

>>
>>51302231
My cousin has an X220, my brother has a T430, and after looking at and using both of those I went with the X230. It's been great for 3 years now. You may make a different choice, but the IPS screen really is much nicer, I didn't need the optical drive or the expensive Quadro GPU and I wanted something smaller than my old Latitude E6400.
>>
>>51302731
I can confirm the advanced BIOS does work. Ivy CPU testing is ongoing, some are confirmed working but I'm waiting a bit longer before I spend any money.

>I plan on doing some light gaming as well (INB4 go back to /v/). Do games like Guacamelee! Gold Edition and The Binding of Issac: Rebirth run well? Should I upgrade my ram if that's the case?
Of course, it can handle most of those 2D indie games with ease. RAM upgrades don't hurt though, for like $20 you can get another 4GB stick to get to 8GBs.

>Can I boot Windows from the SSD and Arch from the caddy?
I haven't tried this myself, but I imagine you would just alter the boot order in the bios whenever you want to boot to one or the other.

>What kind of support...
Not entirely sure because I'm still in Win7, but I imagine with the popularity of the laptops, and the commonality of it being in a business environment, the support would be good for Win 10 and as the OP says (I think) all the thinkpads have great linux support.

Hey all, I got the Thinkpad T500 at a pawn shop today just looking around. I installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04 and so far it's working beautifully, but I have a few questions.
- What's your average battery life with heavy usage, if you've had to use it without the adapter?
- Does constantly having it plugged in kill the battery or not necessarily (due to it being Lithium-ion)?
- How has it treated you over the years, performance and durability-wise?

I've looked into these parts of the laptop, but want to see first-hand accounts, proving or disproving my questions.

Are you fucking kidding me?
I can still do everything except modern games on a x61t C2D 1.6Ghz. My T420 is what I take out if I want something fucking extravagant. I just don't use it all the time because the older machines often have significantly better/larger LCD options, and I have a X201/X61t for school, the only other small/light laptop I typically carry being a 13" 2013 MBA.

Its not that kind of switch, as in it would switch during battery or AC power, I believe it was a feature back then... Unless I'm confusing it with the W500.

Think so, ever since... unless there's a special firmware in the BIOS it would constantly charge even at 100%.

Yo I just found this! If you get a refurbished ThinkPad, and you want to a fresh Windows 7 install on it, but still want all the appropriate drivers (necessary) and apps (bloatware) use KeyFinder (https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/) to do a fresh install.
After you set Windows up, download the ThinkVantage System Update from here: http://thinkvantage-system-update.software.informer.com/download/ and install it.

Varies by what you want, but the X200/X201t had 3 different panel types - AFFS, PVA and IPS (and a few variations in between - e.g. X200t had both LED and CCFL backlights available and various max brightnesses)
The PVA is obviously least desirable with the other two close enough to each other. But if you're not satisfied then you don't have many avenues left, especially noting the image retention on the X220 and X220t which may fuck with you depending on how fussy you are

X200 and T400 are gud. They also support Libreboot. You can get these for ~$150.

I used a 1280x800 T400 for years and I thought it was just fine. It wasn't even a matter of having never used a higher resolution, because I had just come off a 1400x1050 T22. For everyday tasks, you don't really notice the missing 100 pixels all that much. Mind you, when I needed to get serious work done, I hooked up the Viewsonic P815 "Leviathan" and enjoyed the glorious 1800x1440, because 1280x800 is shit for multitasking. But then again, so's 1440x900.
>>
>>51310785
1280×900 is already quite bad for single-tasking, that's why I'm not recommending it. 1440×900 works reasonably for single-tasking, but not very well for multitasking.

I can't even hold a terminal window next to a browser window in 1280×800.

My T420 has been troublesome lately.

About half the time, maybe a little more than: after it goes to sleep, when you press the power button, the machine turns on but the screen does not. Has to be hard reset.

Sometimes if I don't put it to sleep manually, and it's on battery, it will just stay on until the battery dies.

This feels even better than when I was in 8th grade, and I installed Fedora 11 with GNOME for the very first time. The dual-panels use up some real estate, but something about this old desktop metaphor is just so at-home. I guess it's because I was raised/educated on both Win9x and Mac OS 9.

>>51313826
I use the T420 to do portable games, in case the desktop computer is completely unreachable. I've used a shitty ULV i3 with the HD4000 before, and it is miles better than the HD3000, to the point I'd say it's definitely worth it as an upgrade, if you do anything 3D or want to save some watts. Of course, this is all for naught if the new BIOS are not stable, as they're obviously a part of the system whose tinkering and modding shouldn't be taken lightly.

>>51313825
I hope you can make good use of the poor thing with an external monitor, and possibly find a cheap panel sometime (investing a ton on older machines is never worth it if you already have a replacement). I'm a strong believer in not letting working hardware die, and I've previously invested $60 on parts and tools, along with blood, sweat, tears, and inhaled carcinogenic fumes, to bring a Macintosh SE/30 with leaking capacitors back to life, better than the day it was built. Why does the panel go yellow, anyway? Does the CCFL backlight die, or does the whole LCD go kaput?

> The original battery is typically included therefore we can not guarantee the charge time.

That's all the seller mentioned with regards to the battery.

When it arrived, I opened the box and it was powered on, is that normal? Plus the battery included is a 9 cell (not the original battery).
>>
>>51316249
no
>>
>>51316983
2 hours is pretty decent for a second hand battery & no one is going to give you a refund because the battery isn't perfect, they're perishable items.
>>
What would be a decent condition X60t be worth?

Can the screen be judged from seller photos?
>>
>>51317505
>Plus the battery included is a 9 cell (not the original battery).

The seller didn't specifically state it would come with the original. "Typically" being the key word they used.

>When it arrived, I opened the box and it was powered on, is that normal?

No. Generally the batteries are disconnected from the laptop making it impossible for the device to power on.
>>
>>51317900
>No. Generally the batteries are disconnected from the laptop making it impossible for the device to power on.

Well the battery was definitely attached, and on! "Wtf?" was my reaction. Althought I wasn't suprised once I opened it and saw it was on 3%. The battery can now only store 38% of it's original full capacity.

Tbh I find this to be the sellers fault, that they should correct.
>>
>>51318003
>I find this to be the sellers fault

It is not. You were warned that they could not guarantee the originality or condition of the battery. You, should have, purchased the item knowing the battery could be in poor shape.

Unless your seller goes above and beyond what they are required to do, my expectation is that they will not replace or offer a partial refund for the battery. They might offer a return on the entire laptop, assuming you pay the return shipping/any restocking fees they might charge.

Welcome to the world of buying used and second hand electronics. Now you might understand why there there exists people who refuse to buy used.

Daily reminder that the XX30 series keyboards are actually really great, and the people who say otherwise are just sad they can't afford one.

maybe if you don't stick carbon fiber vinyl on it this time. (Didn't you have an X200 that was covered in the same vinyl that you sold on eBay?)
>>
What would be a good price for the X200s? I'd like a higher resolution screen, but the ones on ebay seen to go for 120-200, which is quite expensive
>>
where would you guys reccomend buying a replacement x220 battery from? I hear bad things about ebay ones being fakes etc?

anyone had any good experiences?
>>
>>51318212
Ah well, not a big issue, but nonetheless an issue.

no way am I returning it, came with the nvidia gfx and 64bit (advertised as intel gfx and 32bit). excellent condition, looks brand new. if they don't replace the battery, i'll just buy a replacement.

So basically ThinkPads arent good for games
>>
>>51318707
get a GAYMAN laptop for that anyways
>>
>>51318707
laptops in general are bad for games, is it really surprising that 5 year old laptops with onboard graphics and dated CPUs are too?
>>
I'm not 100% sold on the thinkpad meme, but the prices look great.

I've got a 5 year old acer which has turned into ugly trash over the years. 17" screen, quad core, 5650 mobility...but it runs really hot now and the video card crashes constantly if I try running a game above the minimum settings.

I'm under the impression these ThinkPads are well built, moreso than cheap Acer's or the like. I paid ~$900 for this laptop new, would it be worth pawning or trashing for a ~$300 w500 or even the t420 for ~$200?

The specs look similar, sans the non-integrated graphics...but what's the point of specifically looking for a decent gfx card if the gaming experience is going to degrade over the years?
>>
>>51318799
Acers are some of the worst built shit. Only thing worse is cheap off brand chink shit.
>>
>>51318337
hahahhaa, nah i havent sell anything on ebay, the carbon fiber vynl was for hiding a hideous scratching on the palm rest.
>>
>>51318840
Yeah I know that now, and I got a huge/heavy one.

There's a broken piece of plastic inside it somewhere. I can hear it when I move the laptop around. The hinges still are alright, but those plastic corners busted and I've had to sand down the sharp plastic edges else I cut my wrists.

Never getting an acer again
>>
>>51318895
It's probably the fans of some sort

My brother and sister got Acers in 2005, and I got one in 2006.

Damn thing had the motherboard, DVD drive, GPU, and RAM fail all within the first 6 months.

The replacement unit still works, but it's always been so damn slow even with a light linux installation.

hey /tpg/

great resources here and have helped me buy now nearly a dozen ThinkPads for various uses over the last year.

Recently bought a x230 with IPS and extended battery. Unfortunately no recovery partition on the machine. Need to wipe and reinstall but don't want to pay Lenovo AUD$120 to ship me new recovery media. Is there a simpler / cheaper way? What do?

My dual-core W520 got here, and while most of the computer is pristine, the battery is fucked. It arrived bulging and broken, despite the fact that the seller said it was in pristine condition. Kinda pissed considering I paid well over market price ($400) under the assumption that this thing was mint. I'm thinking about just returning it and getting my money back.

Anyone have experiences returning shit through eBay?
>>
>>51318333
If Lenovo had made a 7-row version of this keyboard, I would have absolutely no problem getting one.

And now for the fun of getting screen rotation to work under Fedora with KDE!
>>
>>51320061
Ask for a large refund, if he denies it, or sends you less than 8% tell PayPal that the item you received did not match the description, and you will get all of your money back, and you will not even have to send the laptop back.
>>
>>51318333
They are, yes it sucks that forward/back buttons are gone, but for me its either the original 6 Row or bust.

They feel great, X1C doesn't tho :x

They're a meme to an extent. They're not the best laptop you'll buy for under $200 if we consider every single thing about a product. A chromebook would win that. There are several things about thinkpads that are just not that great even compared to a sub $200 chromebook even. They are not portable. The trackpads are just awful. The battery life is not good unless you want to spend a sweet $100+ on a couple of new batteries. The hardware is old and will eventually wear out. Electronics do not age perfectly well, especially in inefficient, laptop forms. The screens are fairly terrible unless you get one of the last couple of generations. They aren't as durable as so many people shill on here. The x220 has many issues with the IR section just snapping off. The T400/410/420 have bad hinges and leakage. They aren't the perfect machines. The keyboards aren't even that great. Getting used to that useless trackpoint being in the center of the keyboard fucks with your typing. The only people that actually like thinkpads have been using them for years and don't know anything else.

Could you use a used one, say one of the 5 year old X220's or T420's for three years now without having any issues? No way.
>>
I'm having a hard time selling my T510 for $250 CAD.

It has a 3G sim lot, but idk if people will think of that as a selling point.

I'd be open to a trade for an x200, would I have to put my up for laptop+cash?

Using the buyers guide for the pricepoint.
>>
>>51322399
>5 year old X220's or T420's
>5 year old Sandy Bridge laptops
>Sandy Bridge was released late 2011
Anon those are at worst 4 years old, likely closer to 3.
>>
>Everything finally just werks
Now to do more dumb shit on it! Like install Wine and play yugioh!
>>
>>51317536
so what's considered a good price for a T420 in good condition?
>>
anyone ever get a refurbished thinkpad on blackfriday for a good deal?
>>
I bought my mum an X220 and it came with a US keyboard.

She wants to switch to something else with a bigger screen.

Would a T420 be the be the best option?

She is literally using it for checking emails and word processing.

Are the ThinkPad Yoga and X1 Carbon chinkpads or do they have that robust American build quality?

I got 8GB of DDR3-1333 RAM in my X220, is it worth it to upgrade it to 1600, or higher? Can it even handle that kind of RAM?
>>
>>51325234
It'll just run at the highest clock it can handle, probably 1333

>>51324928
It'd be the next thing up. Maybe consider a T520 too

It can do 1866 with BIOS mod.

There's a guy selling them on ebay already for 250 with Libreboot installed.
