I have 16gbs of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series Ram set up in a 4 x 4 configuration but Windows will only load 8 gbs of it. BIOS detects all 16 gbs, and I have tested each individual stick and they all work fine.

My first thought was to go into msconfig and set the maximum memory to 16384. After a restart Windows refused to get past the boot screen, so I went in through safe mode and unchecked the "maximum memory" and restarted again. This time however windows booted normally and detected the full 16gbs of ram and was using it.

I thought the problem was solved so I shut my computer off for the night and called it a day. However when I turned my PC on about an hour ago the same issue had occurred and Windows was back to only detecting 8gbs of ram.

Any ideas? I'm about ready to just go out and by a new motherboard but before I resort to that I thought I'd come here first.

Boot to bios, see if it's detected there.
What version of Windows is it?
>>
>>51290373
These settings are for debug testing, they're meant to limit what resources the pc has access to.

wrong picture sorry but bios detects all 4 sticks of ram.

Motherboard was salvaged from a prebuilt and does support 16gbs of ram
>>
>>51290672
Easy, RAM stick are newer than motherboard.
Mobo support is for 1066 and 1333mhz ram
GSkill ram is 1600 Mhz so it "could" be incompatile.
Also, most ram from 2010 (mobo time) use double the memory chips on ram while newer ram (g skill) use less chips for same amount of memory.
If you upgraded the bios and the problem persist then its clearly incompatible with that motherboard, get slower ram.
>>
Windows 10 doesn't have this problem.

But seriously, your mobo is too old and its an HP, so of course if will be bitchy with ram compatibility, try older ram.

I'm thinking about just going out and buying a new motherboard at Fry's tomorrow any suggestions?

I have a Intel core i7 870 cpu.
>>
>>51290920
Spoiler: Most motherboards for socket 1156 that support that ancient i7 870 cpu would probably be incompatible with that ram too. Most only supported 1333mhz Max on that times.
>>
>>51290920
Dude, you may not find a 1156 motherboard nowadays, its ancient tech, the 2 big retailers in my city don't sell those since 1 year ago.

Told ya, they don't even sell 1156 anymore. Just buy slower RAM or buy new Mobo + CPU altogether.

This is the ram for reference, I''ve only been using this mobo a few months because the old one crapped out. The old mobo did support all 16gbs. I only noticed yesterday this one wasn't.

How difficult will it be to find a mobile with the right compatibility for This socket?
>>
>>51291033
Pretty hard, you will probably find only used 1156 mobos out there and they dont all support native USB 3.0 and they may be incompatible with that RAM too.
A better sugestions would be to get a whole new Mobo + CPU, a current i3-6100 CPU is the same if not faster than that i7 870, plus it will consume less power, run cooler and have better GPU and chipset with faster ram overall.
That, or just roll with less RAM in the meantime or find 1333Mhz ram.
>>
>>51291062
Is my i7 that outdated? I mainly use this rig for rendering after effects for work and playing games.

I'm conflicted between getting slower ram or just finally updating the mobo + cpu.
>>
>>51291121
Yup, that CPU was released in 2009, six years ago.
http://ark.intel.com/es/products/41315/Intel-Core-i7-870-Processor-8M-Cache-2_93-GHz
And you can search for (i7 870) and (i3-6100) cpu for their relative "Score".

>>51291152
I might just have to go with the slower ram for now any suggestions?

RAM that is rated for 1600MHz (advertised speed) will run at 1333MHz if the Bios tells it to. Odds are your Windows installation is fucking-up or the motherboard is taking a shit. Try running a fresh install of Windows 7. Use a spare hard drive if you can so you won't have to worry about wasted time if it is in fact the mobo.
>>
>>51291203
going to try this in a few minutes. Will post results
>>
>>51291203
I honestly think this might be it, the reason being that the old mobo supported all 16gbs and had an extensive set of bio features while this current mobo is fisher price tier.

That being said I'm going to try a fresh install on a new hdd now.
