Anyone else like running alternative operating systems? I am getting sick of Linux or Windows.
>>
>>51290011
where is the iso for this anyhow?
or is there no pre put together iso like getting RHEL without paying?
>>
do BSD?
your only options (when it comes to OSes) are either some version of Windows, anything that uses the Linux kernel, or something BSD-style
>>
reactos
>>
>>51290011
a few in some vms for fun, but they are all useless.
there isn't any real alternative to linux on a workstation.

Hipster alternative-OS checklist:

>OpenIndiana
>TempleOS/SparrowOS
>ReactOS
>MenuetOS
>Haiku
>MINIX
>Top Hipster tier: Plan 9

>sick of linux
>jumps right into another *nix

So basically you have no real complaints?
>>
Look at this /etc/passwd.
>>
I have never seen that before. Similar to GNUStep?

Plan 9 was a neat experiment.

At least some of its stuff is getting re-implemented in other operating systems. It wasn't a complete loss.
>>
Windowmaker.

temple os isn't hipster tier. hipsters are still too normie for it. only maximum /g/ autists may ascend to using it.

haiku is ok, just needs more work
react tried to emulate crap and end up managing to be even worse, just with less botnet (they didn't even get rid of cmd)
plan 9 looks meh desu
you forgot GNU/Hurd

op's pic is pure darwin, what happens when you base a non apple os of of apple's kernal

openindiana just a foss version of solaris, it has it's purpose
minix is an os for educational purpose like pintos. has it's purpose too.
reactos is a foss version of windows nt 5. important for using old hardware/labhardware, legacy shit, etc.
menutos is an awesome hobby project (if it's still the same as it was ~5-10 years ago)

BeOS was always a joke, so yeah, you got a point with haiku.
same goes for templeos
>>
KolibriOS is neat.

Entirely written in Assembly.

Can run on a potato.
>>
Not many processes running...
>>
>>51290217
Oh, cool. For some reason I thought nextstep/gnustep used darwin, seemed i was misinformed.
>>
>>51290217
>GNU/Hurd
is there actually a running working release of that? I thought that the big joke was that it had been MIA vaporware for longer than Duke Nukem Forever was.
>>
>>51290269
debian made a version using it. although it will be abandoned like debian-bsd, i just know.

want a link?
>>
Yep http://www.templeos.org/
>>
>>51290011
I used to love distro-hopping. I can't tell you how many CD spindles I ran through burning every obscure OS/distro I could get my hands on.
>Mandrake
>Mepis
>SUSE
>Haiku
>ReactOS
>GeexBox
>Knoppix
>ByzantineOS
>SuperGamer

I still test a few on a thumbdrive (mainly pentest distros and Puppy spins), but the thrill is gone.
>>
>>51290295
nah I found it, once I knew it was Debian who did it. I suppose I should've guessed, since they were the ones who did that kFreeBSD thing. Think I won't actually install it and just fuck around in a VM though.

Before I set off any unnecessary triggers, I know that half of those weren't "obscure". Hell, Mepis was the original Linux Mint (Ubuntu-style ease-of-use, non-FOSS packages everywhere).
