I need a new laptop.
I won't do much more than streaming music and movies, word processing, some very light gaming (running emulators and such)
Budget is $1.5-1.8k CAN

Things that are important to me:
1. Build quality
I need something that looks and feels good and will last me 5 years
2. Decent specs
Again, not doing much but I guess this ties in more with reliability considering most things are soldered and inaccessible
3. Sleek, portable design
Looking for a 13", don't want anything crazy bulky or too heavy

Considering rMBP, XPS13, ???

XPS15 which is the same as 13" for any other manufacturer.
>>
Exact use case for an rMBP.

Why do you try so hard to get other people to eat shit from their hands?

what's with all the bait today?
>>
>>51289511
XPS13 is a fine laptop, get the non-touchscreen/4k version for what you are doing
overall size/build quality are as good as any other and performance is great
>>
>>51289559
>OP wants it to last 5 years and has no need for much computing power
>shit from hands memer tries to b8 w/o suggesting anything else because nothing else will do this

>>
>>51289511
here's an idea

go compare specs online
go into a store and touch/feel for build quality

form your own opinions

also, try not to reinforce your own opinions on /g/
you'll often times not get the response you want
>>
>>51289608

>Considering rMBP, XPS13
Both solid choices, rMBP is objectively superior of you don't mind using OSX as main OS, otherwise better go with XPS13.

the trackpad alone makes mac > any dell

3rd party trackpad makers need to step it the fuck up

List is a bit dated and a bit more pricy than your budget, but maybe it will give you a few more companies to look into; they likely have options and other models overlapping with your needs.
>>
>>51290670
To be fair the Botnet 10 improved that noticeable. Still far from Mac but at least somehow usable as mouse replacement.

They've gotten a lot better for sure, but the gestures on most dells don't make any sense.. ESPECIALLY since there are no gestures for switching between virtual desktops

and dell stops updating drivers for them pretty damn quickly - the 2013 XPS13 is still on drivers from 2013, so usage in windows 10 sucks

shit's infuriating

>>
>>51289511
Get a XPS 15 it's only an inch up from what everyone else provides with 13 inch and a 15 inch display is seriously comfy if you want to do anything productive.

Though apparently you aren't with it just being word processing.

mac trackpads are perfection

my asus flip chromebook is also amazing.

no business laptop that i've ever used had a good trackpad
>>

you clearly haven't used the force touch trackpad.
>>
>>51290785
Nice to see applel engineers finally catch up to the 90's.
>>
>>51290765
hahaha retard - dell uses clicking trackpads that aren't NEARLY as good as apple's older clicking trackpads, much less the current force touch trackpads

i bet you still use a net top

Dunno man.. but I find it comical that so many on /g/ care so much about input in the form of mechanical keyboards and mice, but don't seem to give a shit about trackpads

when the input sucks - especially precision input like a trackpad, the experience sucks

Those are completely separate groups.
One is programmers, coders, or just autists who need to type a lot.
The other cares only about how smooth the screen is while scrolling up and down facebook.

Get a Chromebook 13 and install Linux on it, did it and have no regrets. Plus you can get the base model for like $500 with tax, I recommend stepping up to Core i3 with 8 gigs of RAM tho.
