Better floating-point performance
More shading units
More texture mapping units
Slightly more render output processors
Wider memory bus
Hands down the better card. On top of all this (and more) you don't have to worry of nvidia fucking you over (tessellation being the most recent controversy, and a new one should surface within a year), AND you don't give your shekels to a monopolistic, anti-competitive Jew empire.

MSI if you want a silent card, Gigabyte G1 for performance, EVGA for consumer support.
The 970 goes for around $220 at least the EVGA one pretty often on newegg and other places so look around.

for amd I'd recomend the 290x or the 390.
290x can be overclocked into a 390x(as long as the game needs less than 4gb vram) but the 390 has 8gb so it's more futureproof.
Im running an FX 8320 @ 3.7mhz and im only getting 180fps in csgo with an evga gtx970ssc. My fucking 660ti would get the same FPS.
Is my CPU actually bottlenecking me? Should i OC to 4.2mhz or go out and get an i5?

I had a FX8350 clocked at 4.5Ghz, I found a cheap deal for a i5 4440 and made the switch and I can tell you the i5 4440 runs games slightly better than the FX8350 specially games like STALKER that were a stutter fest with the AMD CPU run better now.
Just got a sapphire 390
Retarded good purchase. Playing FO4 1080p ultra no godrays just fine. Barely ever drop below 60 frames and I haven't even overclocked yet. Maximum temps after hours of play have been 47c and 55c gpu/vrm. Custom fan curve keeping both at 27c idle at 30 percent speed.
Seriosusly glad I didn't get a 970. Why would I want to cuk myself in the next year hitting vram bottleneck when all these titles are coming out with mods soon to follow? Drivers are good enough too.

See how zen turns out, then either pick up a zen or Intel upgrade.
You can then either get haswell/skylake a lot cheaper, or get the latest offerings.
I'm still holding on to my i5 750 for that reason, this little chip still has plenty life in it.

If you wait till next year, your upgrade will be a lot better than now. Either a zen or Intel cpu, but with the hype around zen, Intel might actually release a better processor will a solid improvement in ipc.
180fps is nowhere near a bad number, have you tried other games? I think you'll see an improvement with your new gpu in those.

Thanks for that info. 180 fps is ok but thats what my previous card was getting and more than this 970. Also my friends, either with an i5 or an fx8350 are racking up 350-450 fps with their 970's. So im definitely not getting the gpu usuage i paid for.

The real reason you should choose amd over nvidia is product support and longevity. The 290 390 is STILL kicking ass and is still continuously proving to be more than capable.
Nvidia cards are benchmark cards. They rely on super optimized drivers as well as dev support to obtain a numerical edge over amd cards. There is nothing wrong with this, but as history has shown with the 780ti series (which performed better than the 290 at launch, and now performs far below it in recent games) nvidia does not dedicate the resources in sustaining this over time. You may be buying a better card right NOW, but they are banking on the fact that once support drops and the card starts to lag behind, you'll run out and buy the newest one.
AMD however has shown time and again (whether its becsise of business ethics or financial constraints is unknown) that they will keep their cards alive literally until they are pushed into irrelevancy. People STILL use 7950/70s because they are perfectly capable cards that will handle almost anything nowadays at medium-high, or at the very least medium.
The 390, like the 290, will be around for a long time still. Even with Pascal/hbm2, I don't think there's going to be a big enough paradigm shift anytime soon that will create a premature death for these cards.

The sad reality is that even if you do buy nvidia you're paying a premium. That premium is paying for game works to be slapped onto games.
AMD is only slightly less jewy and playing catch up. It makes me sad that we have a near monopoly on gpus and no real choices. Just the illusion of choice.
