Are dedicated portable media players dead? After smartphones and music streaming took off, it seems like no one wants them anymore.
>>
Pretty much. Some people still use them, and I did until mine died. I just use my phone for everything now.
>>
>>51287870
Godamn I miss that.

Dropped it on the street and the HDD fucked. Got it in bits somewhere and always wanted to repair it with an SSD conversion but never gotten around to it.
>>
Say what you want about how "I can put muh music on muh smartphone", but they're still absolutely useless for music unless you're looking right at the screen all the time since they're all touch-screen controlled and you have no idea what you're going to be pressing because of the lack of tactile feedback.

Also, my music player with Rockbox can play way more formats than my phone can.
>>
>>51287870
I literally want to get one because battery life and phone jack die in my pockets faster then you can say niggers tongue my anus toh.
>>
>>51287870
>phone sound quality sucks compared to dedicated audio player
>dedicated can usually hold more
>no more listening to music and some fuckhead calls you cutting the song and forcing you to fumble with wires to answer it.
>>
>>51288280
The volume rocker is enough for me to control my player from within a pocket during a commute. Short press to adjust volume, long press to skip tracks. Anything else would require looking at the screen with both kinds of devices.

>>
i use a small mp3 sansa clip to workout, run, or when i go to say an amusement park. phone is too bulky for working out and dies far too quickly for all day events.
>>
>>51288312
Wait wait hold on, your last bullet. Smartphones handle that transition MUCH better than separate gadgets

>call comes in
>music pauses itself
>start talking immediately if there's a mic on your headphones (stock ones include that)
>take phone out of pocket if not
>music restarts when call is over

The separate items is the fumble city.

Though standalone PMP always wins on cost, battery and storage capacity.
>>
Yep even the Sansa clip+ is the same price of a a unlocked smartphone with better menu options and sound quality
>>
>>51288389
Yeah but
>Be listening to separate player
>Call comes in
>Fucking ignore it and continue listening to music uninterrupted
>>
>>51288473
>Fucking ignore it and continue listening to music uninterrupted

I fully support this anti-social behavior.
>>

I still love that sturdy old mp3 player with usb. Battery lasts forever and it just won't break. Greatfor running
>>
Vlc for Android can play any format of video and audio,
>>
>>51289178
>Greatfor running

This.

I tend to only use my sansa clip nowadays when jogging.

My phone has completely replaced it for listening to podcasts. It's so easy to just stream podcasts over wifi/4g with Antennapod. I used to use Juice Podcast Receiver along with Synctoy and a script to transfer podcasts to my Sansa Clip, but not anymore.
>>
Picked up a Sansa Clip+ for $20 years ago.
I need a replacement (which can use Rockbox/SD Cards) - All other devices either suck or are too expensive.

HALP?

is rockbox another ebin /g/ meme? what the fuck is this shit?
>>
>>51289679
Well because of how diverse portable music players are, they can't make a 'one size fits all' version of the firmware. So they basically have to build a new OS for each one of those devices, which takes a few years to get it working and even longer to get it working stable.

An old ipod or sansa clip shouldn't cost you more than 40 dollars.

My sansa clip+ got run over by a car. Dropped it while fumbling for my phone, didnt realize for a few minutes as it sat there on an intersection.
Anyway, started using my Galaxy S4 for my music until I get a new player. Honestly, I dont feel like I need new player anymore.
Sansa clip is way more expensive now and playing music uses negligible battery until you turn on the screen. I have podcasts and audiobooks, so I never notice the battery drain.
Also, updating files over wifi is much nicer. Honestly, once I got the right apps, I was kinda better off. Maybe dedicated players have a use on the high end, but on the low end, getting a $30 prepaid smart phone and using it as a player is probably better.
>>

I'm thinking of buying a Fio X1 when my ZuneHD dies. I prefer not to have music on my phone as there isn't enough space on it.
>>
>>51289464
I really wish the Zune wasn't joined at the dick to the Zune software, you can't transfer ANYTHING without it, and the way it does it is probably the most convoluted and asinine process ever, you're forced to either create playlists or have it sort everything by artist, and there's no way just to have it transfer and store/navigate everything on a by-folder basis using your music directory structure

The hardware was amazing, but they fucked it up royally in terms of getting your goddamn music on it. It doesn't even register as as mass storage drive or use MTP either, you either use the Zune software, or it's essentially a brick, who the fuck thought that was a good idea?

S4 is pretty decent player, the S5 and S6 are slightly better if I remember right.
You'd be surprised what with the lack of sound quality in most high end players. Most high end players are worse because they lack parametric EQ.

30-40 hour battery life is hard to pass up though.
>>
>>51289679
Remember back when /g/ was buying 3rd-party non-UL listed "Catleap" Korean monitors? Opting-in to Rockbox at this point is that same level of /g/ ebin memery. All the good players have been discontinued and are either the victims of eBay markup, or nonexistent on eBay entirely because said-discontinuation put everyone in a panic ever since the Clip+ was axed last summer

The Rockbox team isn't looking into any other players, and despite having a big array of supported players, the Sansa Clip+/Fuze line and the frankeniPod family are the ones that are actually getting active development, and anything else is at the mercy of the community to port/fork and improve, and that one faggot on the forums who uses a do-it-yourself Android avatar will bitch and moan about how you're the cancer killing the Rockbox community if you question the abandonware status of your firmware of choice

That's not to say it's a BAD firmware, if you have the right device, it's great, and a 128GB microSD card can turn a Clip+ into your last great media player, but the community is a mix of indifferent devs who are unaware that their supported hardware list is on legacy status, with assorted pockets of every Stallmanesqe neckbeard faggot stereotype made manifest

I love my Clip+, but I'm fully-aware this shit's on borrowed time, it's my second one ever since the OLED died, and with hoarding and reselling getting even worse with no new manufacturing happening, I know that a point and time is approaching where if your Clip+ dies in the future, that's a media player permadeath
>>

>Ayy lmao

Just as how smartphones haven't killed portable cameras, smartphones haven't killed music players. they've simply become more niche
people who want to take quality pictures will invest in a camera
people who want to listen to a large library of good quality music will invest in a music player. especially moreso now that more phones are trying so hard to deprecate sd slots
>>
>>51287870
More or less. They're not really necessary anymore. Most people just stream everything and if you really want storage you can just get a smartphone with a microSD slot.
>>

What the fuck are you talking about? You have the option to sync your whole library or pick specific albums and just sync those.
Although i agree with needing the zune software for transfering music is bullshit, it is a really nice player, my current foobar set-up is an attempt to recreate zune player.

How do you run with your phone? Holding it? Putting it in the pocket? Or strapping it to your shoulder like some kind of faglord?
>>
>>51290484
I don't want to sync on an album basis, or any of the shitty autoplaylist or Smart DJ garbage it insists on for transfering, especially since a quarter of my music is a bunch of various mixes where folders have a fuckton of unrelated songs in them, and trying to do anything with them just throws the songs all over the place either by artist or by album, putting them everywhere but the one place I wanted them - the original fucking location they were in

I wanted it to where there's a 1:1 copy of my music folder on it - folder structure and all - and from the menu, I can see my entire library arranged exactly the way it is on my computer, and can navigate through folders as if it was in explorer. The Zune can't do this one basic feature, and as such, fails hard on something Sandisk has been doing for a decade

its actually pretty simple. for windows get something like filezilla server, open any port you want to connect in on (the default is 990 for ftps, 21 for ftp), in filezilla settings change shit on the ftp over tls tab (be sure not to press 'require tls resumption because for some stupid reason, probably botnet so they can intercept your transfers, this wont work on android), and then just connect to the server with the format ftps://(ip address). most file managers have an ftps/ftp plugin. opus is not detected as a format in lower versions of android (4.x and lower) for some stupid reason also. probably other formats this is a problem too. you can still play the opus files in supported players but you wont be able to press 'download and open with' on .opus. i dont know what all limitations ios has so cannot comment on that, and haven't transferred my server over to linux yet since my linux box is still running off an hdd which i plan to change soon so dont know the exact steps or good software to replace filezilla server (as it has no linux port for some stupid reason). i know in linux you can actually mount ftps servers as a disk. yeah, cool as fucking shit. but i dont know if it is possible in android (FOR SOME STUPID REASON) as i haven't found a way to do so. if you can manage that though, the 'download and open with' issue wont be one and you could stream seamlessly between songs. its not as perfect as streaming software so i dont really recommend it, but its what i use (because i have nothing better to do and want to justify all these servers)

If more companies actually switch to pay for data you actually use and get rebated for data you don't, we'll probably see another wave of offline products for entertainment

I can change volume, skip, pause songs without even touching my phone. I don't even have to touch my phone to start playing music. Just put on headphones and press play.
Then there are additional benefits of noise cancelling, never dealing with dangled/broken/annoying wires again.

>needing perfect quality sound when on the go
>implying all bluetooth headphones sound shit
I gotta admit I'm not too fond of the sound signature of those headphones, too bassy, but they're more than good enough to make listening to music enjoyable.
I didn't buy them for the noise cancelling, didn't imagine me really using it much, but now that I have it, it's actually great. Blocks the wind noise well when cycling, blocks the sound of my noisy car and generally makes everything around you a lot quieter.

Now I have a choice between very good sound with background noise or slightly worse sound with muted background noise.

If I want audiophile grade sound, I have a great speaker setup and pair of headphones for home use. On the go I just want to listen to music.

Enjoy tripping over wires.

Enough about the DACs.

>>51296175
It. Doesn't. Matter. Full stop.
The internal DAC has to feed an op-amp which drives the headphone, the op-amps are unloaded into another amplifier.
I've seen super-expensive players that function excellently as DACs, but absolutely shit themselves when being used with headphone. Look at the Astell& Kern players for examples. This is because the internal amplifier is not good enough and cannot stay linear with real current demands.
Do you really want to carry around a separate amplifier on the go because someone decided to make use of a multiple top shelf converters, but left it with garbage headphone output?

I used to think I needed physical controls too, which is why I clung to standalone media players far longer than I should have. Once I grudgingly switched to phone/touchscreen I realized it wasn't nearly as much of a pain as I thought it would be. I don't even think about it anymore to be honest. Plus, if I really want, there are solutions for this. I have headphones with a remote that can pause, play, volume control, skip tracks, and rew/ff. That eliminates the need to take my phone out of my pocket. In the car, my phone syncs so again, i don't need to touch it.

>>51303571
Sure. Just...use it. You don't need a simcard in to use the music app. As for not using iTunes, there are two ways. You can either use a third party music app, or you can download any number of programs that will allow you to add music to your library without iTunes. I've only done that once, granted, but it worked perfectly.

I don't know which ones they are but there are some phones with ok-good Wolfson chips in them, and with VLC you can play anything.

One shitty thing is getting enough power into a nice pair of headphones is a hassle, in which case something like a nice DAP would be better.

I don't understand why apple killed off the iPod classic. Surely they will bring it out again with 240GB of flash storage or something

Bought my first Samsung YP-P2 used 5 years for 20$ ago for listening to podcasts while running. Such a nice device! Stacked up on them and have now 3. Spend 10-20$ each.
Few days ago checked ebay since one has broken memory - price is at 50$ for 8GB version now. Would still buy.

Looks good on paper but I think it's the headphone preamps that really make a difference? Unless you use your own like a true Autistâ„¢

This. I mean I want one, but surely everyone else will as well. If you have a smartphone the only iPods worth buying are shuffles and classics. Touch's are just gateway iPhones for children.

So use a line-out adapter

Today the most basic phones (not even smartphones) have incorporated music players. I remember stop using portable media players back in 2008, when I got pic related. Damn unbreakable phone lasted 4 years, it was my last phone before making the smartphone jump (xperia x8)
