I'm not the same guy who posted the Chromebook comment, but I had an Acet C720 that is well worth it. It's light, has about a 7-8 hour battery life, and has an i3 processor.

It unfortunately has a crappy resolution, but if you're not watching 1080p videos or playing video games it really shouldn't matter much.

Plus you can use Linux on it :^)

Don't even need a laptop for that stuff, technically you don't even need a tablet - you could very well use your smartphone w/ a bluetooth keyboard. But personally I wouldn't suggest that option.

Any laptop will do, if you have no interests in getting a good end laptop just pick up a chromebook C720 or whatever it was. And then you can pick up a better laptop down the road if your situation requires it.
>>
asus flip

it's a 10.1"~ chromebook that gets 10 hours of battery life, no fan, convertible, keyboard is actually very good. $220 or something at best buy. like 2 lbs or some shit. build quality is impressive as hell.

I actually like the keyboard more than thinkpad keyboards. no fucking joke. just the size of the keys, the key travel, and the spacing; it's just a very good combo how they did it and I can type very quickly and comfortably on it.
>>
>>51288945
Yeah, this.
Just throw Openoffice on a chromebook and you're set for school. Also they're Solid state drives so supah fast
>>
>>51288960
using one this moment. it's so fucking convenient. chromeOS is extremely convenient. the laptop is small and lightweight. the keyboard is surprisingly very good for being small. ten hour battery life. it gets the job done and I think it's absolutely perfect. so many little things about chromebooks that google and asus just did right. the trackpad works very well. scrolling works better than a damn mouse wheel, I swear.

Specs are about what you'd find in a Chromebook, but this thing runs freaking great.

2gb of RAM
Some kind of quad core atom
32gb of storage +micro SD
About 2-2.5 pounds
11.6 inches

I'd say go for it. Depending on where you are, you could probably find it even cheaper than $200.

If you got money for more, check out the Dell xps 13

chromebook + low cost desktop build is god-tier setup if you don't have loads of cash

>>51290837
This.

Even better if you can somehow fit it into a Mini ITX so it's all portable.
>>
>>51290837
If I only had like $500 to spend, this is what I'd do.

$100 or so on a chromebook, spend the rest on a desktop build, make sure you have a decent monitor (1080p 23") decent keyboard and you have a perfect thing to relax on in your bedroom, and then your chromebook is a perfect portable light laptop that is quick, has a long battery life, and just werks.

>>51290979
It's so fucking good for how small it is. It's very tactile. I can type very quickly. If this was an 11.6", I'm sure it'd be nicer. I just bought this and can return it at any time. I'm probably going to just return it and get one of the CB3's at Best Buy for $99 on Black Friday.

this one is the Flip that goes for like $220 because it's the 2GB model. I just got it to try out since best buy is having that whole end of the year return policy now and wow I actually love how quick and simple chromeOS is. The trackpad on this thing is also easily the nicest I've ever used on any laptop ever. it works perfectly, every single time.

I also bought an HP Stream 11 just as a comparison and holy shit it's just not as nice.

IMO, if you're using an inexpensive portable device, buy a chromebook, NO QUESTION! windows is just too fucking slow on laptops, even this silly Stream 11 thing. It's a joke in comparison to this Asus Flip thing.

>>51290979

I'd say this strictly for the Office program. If you collaborate with any normies they won't appreciate LaTeX or LibreOffice.

DESU though a Chromebook would fit the bill more than enough. You don't need any power if you aren't gaming.

I just got a chromebook for school and it is awesome! It is seriously worth the money.

I found a refurbished samsung one on newegg for $99. That way I could try it out and if I didn't like it its no big deal. It has a arm processor but you would never know it.

I would say definitely get a chromebook. If you want to put Linux on it just get one with a Intel processor.

The only real laptop choices are memepads and kekbooks rest is all trash

Chromebook or Memepad. I switched from the former to the latter (X201, not the tablet version) and it's a huge improvement. With a new 9 cell, which is like 25 bucks, it goes for about three hours with full screen brightness and wifi on, neither of which are necessary when on the go / taking notes in class.
>>
go to the arch wiki
find the chromebooks that support linux the best
buy one refurbed.

that's what i did, now i have a 100USD acer c720 running debian sid.

feels good man

my suggestion is for you to buy a Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725
> pic related
- its intel core 2 quad Q9000 processor is enough for your college tasks such as homework
- the on board NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX is more than capable of video playbacks for the lectures you would need to watch
- the 17 inch display is the perfect size for a college student user
- the speakers are located in the perfect location
- and its 4.1kg weight is sweet spot in laptop weights

Just bought a certified refurb 2015 MacBook Pro 13" for $1200, pretty fuckin solid for the upgraded specs for the base price

Can I install gcc on chromebook?

Yeah windows has turned into something like how Mac is where you need certain hardware (read microsoft's premium laptop line) to run it properly.

My current laptop is
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P6FM23W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02

It's really good. It has a keypad which I absolutely love, and it gets almost 8 hours to the battery life, with full brightness. It was a bit difficult to set linux up on it, because at the time there was a bug with UEFI in ubuntu, but setting it to legacy caused the trackpad not to work. All in all, it's a good laptop. It's a bit big for a student laptop. But I like it.

Also switched the hdd out to an ssd and I'm definitely not regretting that.

The Acer Chromebook 11 is the definition of just werks.

Everything is acceptable on it. The worst thing about it is that the screen has a cooler temperature to it, but it's still absolutely usable and isn't more than a bit of nit-picking.

I'm currently comparing it to the $220 Asus Flip chromebook. The CB3 is nicer in every way IMO. The keyboard is full sized. The screen is a good size/good resolution for its size. The speakers are much better. I THINK it's faster because of having this Celeron in it instead of a rockchip. It's just a more comfortable machine and 100% 10/10 worth the $95 and $99 it's going to be on Black Friday. No wonder this thing sells so well.

You can't get six hours with a six cell in a t420. I'm lucky to get three. T420 is a terrible choice for a college student.

OP: XPS 13 or Macbook

...that means your battery is obviously not new and has degraded over time, like all batteries.

Also, why are you suggesting fucking $1000+ laptops to a fucking college student?

School doesn't matter -- Networking is the key. Normie's are too stupid to use LaTeX, so concentrate on conforming shillings.

Absolutely this

I have a C720 and I'm still using it daily, the thing just doesn't quit
>>
>>51300917
By the way don't get a C720
The screen is terrible and will make you want to rip your eyes out
But chromebooks are definitely the way to go
>>
>>51300933
The build quality on the C720 is apparently worse than the CB3 and that's about it.

>>51286840
Rpi or chrome book

>>51286840
I got a used chromebook c720, put windows on it. Perfect for cheap and portable.
>>
>>51290865
Exactly what I just did! Except my budget was way less
Chrome book -55$
Desktop build + 23 monitor- 200$

I would be very happy if you could answer this anon.

If you go into the recording devices menu in windows on that laptop, does it allow you to enable stereo mix if you right click and show disabled devices?
