you can do actual work on one
like, OSX is kind of naff (other than the fact that I can get like 3x the battery life with it, although only if I do nothing but use a text editor and Safari, maybe play some music) and it turns out professional software is better and more plentiful under Windows and open source software is noticeably better under Linux or Windows (it is oddly terrible on OSX, no one gives a fuck)
install windows on it, you overpaid, but now you can do work (and it boots fast enough that switching back and forth to use OSX as a power-save mode is pretty viable), the machine is powerful enough that unless you're placing it directly on your bed instead of a hard surface (shit gets hot), it'll do most non-gaming tasks fine

Acer's build quality is complete ass, but you could get a rather nice machine spec-wise at that pricepoint from them.
the thing is, I have a completely dead Acer laptop next to me (no drop or impact damage or anything, it just doesn't power on, also the power port was fucked, smartpad can't click anymore, loved that machine until it started to fuck up on me) and another within arms reach that doesn't have the hinges (that one still works, but it's a shitty C-60 powered netbook, it had a pretty hard bump -- no fall, pulled the RAM and HDD out of the other machine and shoved it in this one, works pretty nice, held together with duct-tape and runs Xubuntu)
will probably never buy Acer again
