I pretty much did this. My 290 broke and I got a full refund even one year after my purchase so I bought the G1 Gaming 908ti. Pretty nice perf jump. Still can't max anything on my 4k monitor though.

OP here, not sure if I should upgrade, if I sold my 390 I'd get the 980 Ti for <£300
Also unsure to go for 1440 or Ultrawide
Trying to decide for weeks if I should go with a 390+ 1440p/144hz Freesync monitor or 980ti+ 1440p/144hz G-sync monitor. It's not so much the price that bothers me even though the 390 option is much cheaper, it's just that I don't want to spend so much on a 980ti only to get jewed hard in like a year.
