Best upgrade you can do for your computer.

Source: I have two ssds and had them in raid0 for a while so believe me when I say I know fast.

Imagine things you think are pretty fast now. Loading up your web browser is pretty fast right? With an ssd it becomes practically instantaneous.

There will be posts ITT that have the meme arrow followed by ``falling for the ssd meme'' but that itself is a meme. Upgrade, I cannot believe you haven't already.
>>
I wouldn't say I upgraded from a HDD.

I still use HDD for storage of random junk and crap that's important to me.

However, it is a very good quality of life upgrade if you install your OS on the SSD, or whatever software you feel is important on it, because it loads hell of a lot faster.

Why are you even making this thread in 2015? Literally every IO operation will be faster. Energy consumption is lower. It's silent. They're no longer that expensive.
The only reason to have a HDD now is if you need multiple TB for hoarding things.
>>
Honestly I don't think it's worth it for speed. I have one in my laptop for portability and power usage, but the only performance gains is a boot time of 3 seconds from power button instead of 5, directories loading in the file manager in 0.01 instead of 0.1, and Firefox loading in 5 seconds instead of 10. For gaymen it might be worth it but I can put up without

Do you have a decent amount of money?
If you don't, do NOT get an SSD.

For from that day forth you will never again go back, and end up considering spending hilarious amounts to RAID0 2x2tb 850s like i'm about to.

They're a headache.

Regular hard drives "just work".

SSDs have all this bollocks about partition alignment, erase block discarding and stuff.

Look at all this:

>>51278945

An SSD will improve the performance of your PC in numerous areas, primarily by the simple fact that every read/write to a file on your machine will be sped up. Since the basic premise of a computer is to read/write information, it's an upgrade that improves every facet of the user experience with a PC.

How do you guys make the transition less painful?
>>
Boot time is maybe 30 seconds quicker with the SSD as opposed to the HDD.

Applications are a lot snappier.

Working with VM's is good coz installing um takes a small amount of time.

Gayming..meh...

Space is annoying but with an external drive or NAS you'l be fine. Got my 850 pro 256GB for 120.
>>
OK. I need a cheap SSD for my OS. (Windows 10 Pro) I bought a WD Blue 1TB for games. What is the best/cheap SSD? I want/need it to last a long time. Also what is a good 2.5 to 3.5 adapter for SSD?

Once you go SSD, you get hooked like cocaine.

I have a 1T SSD and I might buy another tmmw. I would even recommend it over a 980 Ti. More practical benefits (faster porn file transfers and sorting).
>>
>>51278945
Yes, it's worthy. You feel the difference in anything you do (except maybe gayming).
If you have a laptop, it's double worth it.
>>
The best comparison I can think of for HDD to SSD is like browsing the internet with and without an adblocker. You just can't go back once you're used to it. Though admittedly newer operating systems are faster with spinning drives, there's always still slowdown at various time. My main storage drives are always notably slower.
>>
You can't use full disk encryption on an SSD.(Read TC/VC guide for more info)

So sadly I had to switch back to using my HDD as my OS drive. I still have my SSD for other various programs though.

Even if you get the most expensive CPU and GPU available, without an SSD the computer will feel as if it's from the 90s.

Everything happens 10 to 20 times faster. The biggest gains happen when you have several applications to read files at the same time. What normally would take maybe one minute even on an HDD can take easily 10-20 minutes - with an SSD it's done in seconds and it simply no longer matters whether it happens in parallel or not. You can just use your computer without having to constantly worry about the low level details.

Senpai, you have got to be kidding me.

If I didn't have Skyrim installed on an SSD it would literally take me 5 minutes to load a save because of how many extremely high res textures I have installed on it. Any game will load monumentally faster with an SSD and without it you would be sitting at loading screens for minutes on large game installs.

>>
>>51285129

Not that anon, but the speed difference isn't noticeable when dealing with small files. If you are on a budget it only makes sense to use HDD for long-term storage of movies and music.

As for anyone who asks if its worth it: Open up your system utilities and look at the three graphs: RAM, Processor, and Disk. You'll notice which one maxs out the most, thus causing a bottleneck.

>THEY FELL FOR THE SSD MEME
>>
Nigger if you only knew how memory works, then you would see what's the big deal with SSDs. Every single process has virtual memory on your boot drive right now, yes that shitposting tab has virtual memory on it just chilling on your boot drive. Thing is that you need to read those virtual addresses and then map them to physical memory. Guess what motherfucker, your spinning magnetic disks are slow with your pathetic arms, SSDs are pure flash. Booting up is a bonus, but it's not the main reason why they're so good.

Visible sage when?
>>
Yes, SSD is exponentially better than old platters at this point. They are now more robust and software is designed to identify and protect them from unecessary tasks like defrags. On top of this they are virtually impervious to write/rewrite functions at this point.

There are now large capacity SSDs that boast a terabyte plus without sacrificing read/write speeds. These the most important factors to a good SSD, you are wasting your money if you don't get one capable of ~500 maps read/write.

All data is readily available in SSD format instead of having to be read off a spinning platter.

>>51286375

SSD have shorter life span than HDD. If you dont need too much speed you can get much more space for money with HDD.

100% worth it for the price that they are now. You'd be stupid not to get one really. The only thing is now is M.2 x4 drives are going to be the next thing. Performance is looking incredible so far. This does mean you'll get SATA3 2 5" drives dirt cheap though.

just fell for the SSD meme and copped a Samsung 850 EVO recently; I heard it would significantly improve many aspects of a game I play often (Path of Exile). After using the Samsung Magician software to optimize everything, I can say that while it's noticeably faster, overall it wasn't worth the ~$70 I spent (yes I got a 120 gb SSD).

I can see it being useful for some games. I really thought it would be more of an improvement, personally. I'd only recommend it if you're an enthusiast who has addressed every other bottleneck in his rig. Don't fall for the meme like I did senpai

While true, it's only true because SSDs have predetermined lifetimes, whereas mechanical harddrives just fail whenever.
Claiming SSDs have shorter life spans than mechanical harddrives is nonsense. You'll see a couple mechanical harddrives before you've written those 600TB (or much, much more) to your SSD.

large SSD media drives are a poor expenditure unless you already have purchased/built a NAS, etc.
