Are Thinkpads only a /g/ meme? Just like Gentoo?
I'm actually considering one to go along side my main rig and another linux build im about to start working on.

Thinkpads are pretty decent laptops man. If you are in the market for one just make sure you get a surplus/retired business model, the consumer versions of the same models have a worse build quality.

I'd avoid buying directly from Lenovo personally, just find some from a local business wants to liquidate because they are out of warranty. You will get a laptop of a decent build quality cheap.
Elitebook owner here, it's not a meme, you should however note that you will have a bigger, heavier and shorter lasting laptop than current day ones, but it will be of superior build quality.

T420 is a very solid machine.
Just make sure you don't get one with a 1366x768 screen, those panels are the worst in every aspect. The 1600x900 one is acceptable.
Alternatively, T420 can be upgraded to 1920x1080 IPS or even 2560x1440 IPS through some custom kit that's apparently difficult to source these days.
Or if you want a laptop that's born with a 1920x1080 TN panel, there's T520. You can't get an IPS panel or 2560x1440 in that one, but because that one is born with the 1920x1080 panel it's that much easier to upgrade from a lower resolution. Just buy the appropriate panel and slap that bitch in there, no biggie, takes maybe 20 minutes if you know what you're doing.
You could also look at W520 or newer models if you want more power.

I paid 180 bucks for a 420t. the battery-life is shit but the rest is fine. also gentoo may be a bitch to install but it's actually great as an OS.
