Basically like hard to find cartoons or stuff that was on TV years ago that didn't get a commercial release. So the quality won't be that great for a lot of stuff. They do have a lot of interesting content though. Used to be painfully easy to get in, just by posting in their forums and asking for an invite. Try rebooting your computer too. That sometimes fixes it. I find that I change the configs on my computer and it doesn't update until I do a reboot.
Strict NAT is probably router related because when I got a new rooter I didn't have to do the black magic to make portforwarding actually work.
The third reason is also potentially ISP side blocking. I believe I read a site where it said that some ISPs block ports so that downloading and uploading are both impossible. If the port is also in use I believe that it won't work.
Port forwarding is probably the most annoying part of private trackers and part of the reason I ratiowhore so hard - I fear that one day I won't be able to port forward anymore.

Basically the scene races content to get it out as fast as possible. They do TV episodes very quickly after airing and they get movies out very quickly after bluray release. They follow a set of guidelines which everything released in the 'scene' has to have. They're not the best quality you can get, but it's often perfectly acceptable. Scene trackers upload content from the scene as fast as possible.
So for someone new to trackers TorrentLeech (TL) is pretty good. If you can find everything you want on there in a quality that's acceptable for you then it's no issue. P2P groups are the alternative to the scene, and they release mostly on dedicated private trackers (e.g. dedicated to movies or TV). They're better quality, but also bigger filesizes, and you'll need to climb the private tracker ladder a bit before you get access to the best stuff. Read the pastbins in the OP and read tracker reviews if you want to learn more about the different trackers.

Depends on which trackers you have. It is a stepping stone tracker like What.cd except you can keep it as a backup tracker since they have ALL content, not just music and people will fulfill your requests from the top trackers.
