Everybody just puts on headphones and shuts up. Even when we are in the same room, we will use skype if there is nothing to see/show.
>>
>>51261391

Lmao. What company do u work for?
>>
>>51261360
4/10
>>
>>51261411
A startup that you haven't heard of.
>>
Can't speak for the average office, but in my workplace: 9/10. We're 10 people who went to uni together.
>>
>>51261360
Depends on the company and what type of programming.

Also I don't think programming offices on its own exist. Unless it's a small company. Normally you get companies with many departments.

And depending on your role you might have to interact with other departments/customers/others in your department / /g/

Enjoy being a wage kek.

Do many social events happen outside of office hours?
>>
>>51261535
no
>>
>>51261391
10/10 accurate about the headphone part.
>>
>>51261534

So, as a Java Developer, would I have to interact with many other people?
>>
Depends on the company and team structure.

Most likely you're gonna work divided into some kinda teams - most socializing happens inside the team. Other people you're mostly just gonna meet once in a while in the lunch room or something. Once in a month or two there may be some kinda company party where you can socialize with some more people.

If the employees are young folk with some free time, it's also possible that some of them may try to spin "[interest] meetings", e.g. a knowledgeable guy doing some "lessons" on electronic circuits for other folks who want to know something about the subject.
>>
The average work week contains a shitload of meetings with other programmers(~7h), with non-programmers(~3h), and pair programming(~30% of the remaining time)

6/10

I work for a small software editor, we use the scrum method.
>>
>>51261568

>>
>>51261568
I feel like regular pair programming would be really stressful? How is it? Do you do it every day?
>>
"Programming office", I dunno

Engineering Office, 2/10. Awesome.

"Fun, Friendly Startup" - 9/10. Open office plans (like your pic) are fucking hellholes and should be glassed from orbit. There's always one stupid fucking bitch who ruins it. I had to wear my studio headphones and blast Lightning Bolt to even stand a chance of drowning her out. Softer music/anything with lulls in it wouldn't work because it would still let through her stupid valley girl cadence even if I couldn't make out the words.
>>
>>51261548
You should have been taught how to talk to clients and other programmers in cs 101 getting a job class.
>>
>>51261612

>going to college to learn coding
>>
>>51261583
Almost.
I like it. As a newb it's sometimes a bit hard to stand your ground when someone is condescending, but it's an opportunity to learn so you just stfu and take it.
It all evens out when you become the skilled guy in some area of the codebase.
>>
>>51261391
Literally this
>>
I've seen anything between 1 (cubicle setting, older colleagues, zero interaction except for talking shit about our ceo during cigarette breaks) and 11 (bunch of young colleagues who also spent most of their free time together watching movies and playing vidya - some even became fuckbuddies). Completely depends on the type of company.
>>
>>51261548
>java developer

what, you develop the java language itself?

nigger you use java to program shit. and if you are an actual code monkey you might as well commit sudoku now.

if you didn't get some analysis classes in you are screwed. the code monkeys go no where. atleast the analysts can move up in a company.

Maybe 4/10. If there's shit to do, you can almost go the whole day without talking to people, but if there isn't, the place is pretty amicable and most people can hold a discussion about nerd shit (or, failing that, generic office small talk about pets or the weather.)

Sorry for the mistake, nigga. I meant as a “Software Engineer”, would I have to socialize much?

Holy shit that guy was on /b/ a few months back asking how to kill himself
>>

Just /b/ being /b/
>>
>>51261693
it all depends on the company, what your job title is, and what you are doing.

you will always have monday and friday meetings. no matter what. if you use agile or scrum you will always be talking to people and it will be fucking unbearable. if you get in with an old school style company that uses more of a waterfall method you will have alot of time to yourself.

and even if your degree says 'software engineer' you will be part of specific teams depending on what your good at. code monkeys have it the worst. testers have it a little better but alot of them write the man pages. the people who have it best are the analysts that do almost no coding, but spend hours making charts that literally no one looks at. but if you want to be the boss in this field, you have to be an analyst.
>>
>>51261693

During the interview there's always a part where they say "do you have any questions for us?"

1. Ask them where you would sit. It sounds almost trivial but it has a fucking huge impact on your quality of life. If they don't have a specific answer "oh, we'll work something out" that means they're either going to try to stick you in a windowless hellhole or in the middle of a pack of stacies.

Number 2 is "how are the chairs?"

Thanks for this. Yeah, I can see how a shitty desk location can make me kill myself.

That feel when my office view is a lake.
I might start fishing on my lunch break in the summer.
>>
>>51261752
Wow just realized how lucky I am with this, didn't ask beforehand, but got a good space.

Overall i would say 7/10. We share our workspace with a logistics company which we share a lot of ties with.
>>
>>51261360
And socializing at work is not like school or parties, you just talk a bit of bullshit. Nobody expects to become homies for life, just be able to tell about your weekend without looking like an idiot.

Although frienships could be found in the workspace
>>
>>51261752
What should I do if they say "Oh, we'll work something out"?

Fucking this. I still don't have the weekend thing down tbqh.
>>
>>51261871

Honestly if you're a NEET you might just have to grit your teeth and bear it until you get to the one year mark and can safely jump ship without looking like a pariah.

Things you can say: "Health/Wellness/Quality of life/ natural environment etc is important to me" (try to sound like a holistic faggot),

"I like fresh air/ colder temperature/ natural light" (just pick one so you don't sound needy) Stacies HATE being cold so asking for cold you might end up in a windowless dungeon but you won't have to talk to anyone. Windows and natural light are great but at my last job HR and the BizDev pretty much bogarted those and expected to chatty cathy it up with everyone in earshot/ long rambling sales calls etc.

As for the chair/desk situation, "Ergonomics" is a good word that sounds better than "I don't want to look like Quasimodo in 8 months". You almost certainly won't have the pull to request a standing desk right away unless the rest of the team already has one.

You can also make up lower back issues or some medical reason (no one can tell obvs), but I'd wait until after you've signed the offer if you're going to pull this one.

But I don't do anything in the weekend.

This weekend I spent the entire time working on my Bloodborne plat, then visiting my dad for Father's Day.

depends on factors like:
-how autistic are you
-what is the autist to normie ratio in your workplace
>>
>>51261579
I feel that.
Other then that - 4/10. Im 20 listen to music all day. the rest of my team are 40+ and dont talk anyway.

Programming world sounds dusty as hell. Is this what its like for people that arent top tier?
>>
>>51261752
these are terrible questions. in the interview phase they're still figuring out if they want you in the first place. asking questions which reflect an obsession with petty things reflects really poorly on you.

if you get the offer, you should absolutely ask questions about benefits and whatnot - ask to speak to a randomly chosen employee in the same workspace as you and see what they think about the layout, for instance - but the chair question is particularly small-minded. If you're getting hired to program, you're probably getting paid $50k/year (probably more). You probably represent $80k/year in costs to them (given benefits, taxes, etc...). If your prerequisite to signing is that they buy you a good chair (up to $1000) and they flat out say no and insist that you sit in shitty chairs, then they probably weren't planning on having you for a full year in the first place.

but asking these questions is putting the cart before the horse. it's like asking them to clarify the free beverage policy in the interview. you're there to impress upon them that you're a good investment, not some nominally qualified guy looking for a place to plant his ass comfortably for 8 hours a day.

Do I have a coworker that browses /g/ !?!

Bumping for interest. I'm a total shut in that's doing great in college at the moment, would like to know more about it these social aspects of these programming jobs.
>>
Used to be 6/10 before when I was working in a group. Suddenly the company required the elites of the elites in a few departments and somehow I ended up being chosen. After a few weeks it was 2/10 because a lot of asshats thought they were the shit but eventually that dried up and now it is 7/10.
