It retains its value, has decent enough build quality, provides a great screen, and has good enough battery life. - Lightweight
- Long battery life
- i5 processor or higher
- SSD
- Good build quality & screen
EVERY OTHER FUCKING WINDOWS COMPETITOR was either more expensive or were less in one of those 5 requirements.
Dell XPS 13? 300 cycles battery life and 300$ more expensive for the same amount of 256GB SSD and same processor
HP Probook? Uses an HDD for the same price and is heavier. For the same specs you pay 200$ more but the battery life is 6 hours instead of 10 (MBPr)
Thinkpad? LOWER BATTERY LIFE and heavier. You also get less for your money! I checked the prices, same specs are 200$ more expensive but the battery life stays lower
Asus Zenbook? Battery life only 6 hours. 128GB SSD instead of 256GB for the same price.
Lenovo U series? Lower battery, heavier and slower processor.
Yoga pro series? Lower battery life, slower kind of I5 processor (2ghz instead of 2,6) and if you want the same SSD you pay the exact same. But you still keep the lower battery life.
So yes, i did my research. And yes, i never actually liked Applefags. But now i see that Apple being overpriced simply isn't true, i bought myself an MBPr.

OSX is the only serious desktop/laptop operating system. Linux is a time-wasting kikey GNU clusterfuck for toenail-eating spergs who are somehow OK with spending more time working on their operating system than working on actual work. Windows is a fucking clown show for soccer moms and other casuals (those tiles, wow). Plus we all now know that Windows is pretty much an NSA trojan (free upgrade goy!).
I use all 3 for different projects, plus FreeBSD for everything that goes into the cloud.
You are right about one thing - OSX is the only operating system that gets completely the fuck out of my way so I can get some work done. Almost zero drama. Tiny chromes. No crazy colors. BSD underneath. Drivers? What's that? Use brew to get just about anything Linuxfags can get. And Apple hardware is second-to-none, as you already know.
If you want to use Visual Studio or play games and don't mind the NSA, use Windows. Visual Studio is still king, and gaming is still way better on Windows than OSX.
If you have no money and don't mind wasting some of your time fixing annoying problems then use Linux. Or if you simply enjoy editing makefiles and resolving dependency problems just to USE software (never mind CREATE software). Oh, and stick to Intel video and popular mainstream NICs, etc. This is your best shot at achieving even 25% of the smooth experience of owning a Mac. It's literally the current year and drivers are still a fucking problem for Linux (thanks GNU!).
If you want to have the best experience, you have to spend some money and buy a Mac. If you can't afford one, then using a PC with Linux or Windows is fine too. Just recognize that you took the poorfag road instead of choosing premium computing. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

It's Unix so it works for programming, unlike Windows, and it's made by a company who controls their hardware and gives a fuck about good UX so the OS isn't an unstable piece of shit like any given Linux distro. If I found fucking with driver installs fun I would be using a Linux box instead, but I make enough money from said programming job where I don't need to sweat a couple hundred bucks. OSX is based on BSD. Code still goes both directions between FreeBSD and Apple Darwin. In fact, some FreeBSD contributors are Apple employees.
In fact, it could be argued that OSX is more Unix than Linux is. BSD has a shorter lineage leading back to AT&T/Bell Unix than Linux does.

My laptop's SSD is filled with 300 GB of data atm. That's some applications, photos, some movies, music, VMs etc. I want this stuff on the go, as I go by train a lot and mobile internet is unreliable and expensive.

Pure convenience. The question is, why would I not do that in 2015 when storage is pretty cheap. Also, stuff like music is something that needs to be fully available all the time in order to enjoy. I don't want to stop working one day because I'm out of space. It's unnecessary.

I don't really like the idea of putting all of my data into the cloud, it's inconvenient most of the time, as I'm suddenly 100% dependent on the internet. Also I don't have a home server. It's a stupid workaround for a problem that doesn't exist.

For the OS. Some people prefer the way certain operating systems feel, the tools they offer and the hardware its bundled with. If you are too autistic to comprehend that your ideal OS environment is good enough for everyone then what hope do we have in justifying our reasons.
OS X is nice, features like preview are extremely useful and supports Adobe filetypes, so when I'm looking through endless PSD's I can find the one I'm looking for without opening it and wasting time. Windows 10 doesn't even thumbnail PSD's.
It's small things like this that contribute to the user experience and Apple confirm that UX is crucial to selling hardware time and time again. Microsoft have a lot of catching up to do and Windows 10 feels utterly unpolished in comparison to the several generations old Mavericks I use at home on my own hardware (not a mac). I can't use OS X legally in a workplace without using a Mac, and that alone is enough justification for people to get one, and if it's going to be used for work/making money people care less about the initial cost.
For clarification, I work in the design industry where macs are essentially the default. Teams rely on workflow that relies on mac software and there's not really much that can be done about it.
