While I find this concept entertaining I think the implementation is rather lackluster.

But let's talk about it.

First thing to say: if you're looking to build a cheap PC don't do what these guys do. You don't have a time limit, and you can use bits and pieces of technology you already use. And most important of all: you can use ebay.

I'd prefer a more typical reality TV style judges panel with points for particular aspects of the build

The ol' Iron Chef
>performance 50 points
>reliability 25 points
>looks 25 points
with three judges for 300 points total. Performance could vary since not every PC is designed for gaymen.
>>
>>51257485
Iron Chef has a limited amount of time and resources plus you HAD to use whatever they said so. If the chefs didn't bring it with them or it wasn't on the "free stuff" table, it was out of the picture.

That would be fascinating: you must use ___ in your build. You can not use things not on the approved list.

Chances are we'd all end up with something pretty similar to the Falcon List, though.
>>
>>51257485
I mean, considering limited budget I think LTT does a pretty good job with the show.

I would love to see a budget video editing pc build.

Austin's GPU for his build in the recent episode is a Radeon HD 6990.

Now, there is no denying this GPU is powerful. And for $180 he got a good deal. This card will do well in benchmarks.

However, in "real world" performance this card is known to be extremely hot and loud, and games will suffer from stuttering framerates due to the Dual GPU setup. So...there are compromises. Not saying I still wouldn't go with it, but a build that uses this card is not the sleekest build. On ebay you will find many cards for the same price with near the same performance or better around the same price point.

If you have the time to sit around you can occasionally find things like a GTX 970 for $180 or even a GTX 980.

But consider some HD 6990's have sold on ebay for less than $120...
>>
>>51257603
well, he bought it for 180 Canadian dollars, which is pretty much 120 usd.
>>
>>51257603
You also have to remember they are on a strict time limit, they don't have time to order and wait sometimes weeks for a package to arrive

it's almost like this is satirical or something.
>>

Ugh, you're right. Good on him tho.

I like the show but considering the mistakes they make I always cringe when it shows them driving.

Also when they fucking text and drive.

If you think the minute it took me to type out that post is "effort" I feel really bad for you.

Austin is real autist, I hope he destroyed at least one of his psu, and something along with it.

Austin on testing build outside of case
>Austin: Oh no, we don't have a way to turn this on!
>Edzel: Screwdriver.
>Austin: I've never done this before, what are you talking about?
I mean, really?
>>
>>51257846
He's what, 20 years old?

His generation doesn't have much experience with desktop PCs. The peak years of the desktop geek were between 2000 and 2008. Someone who was a young man in those years can be expected to know his way around a motherboard. Everybody else, not so much.
>>
>>51257876
> His generation doesn't have much experience with desktop PCs
Yet he's showcasing some silly builds over his channel.

On topic, Luke will blow them all, btw didn't know this have imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5145166/
>>
>>51257780
>let's split the power from two psu's down to one connector

This man is the most autist well known PC builder/YouTuber. I mean wtf is he thinking?!?
Also he for ripped off on the ram. Doesn't know new 8gb sticks go for $30 u.s., and probably used $30 in Canadian cash.

>>51257969
Luke seems like he will rekt everyone; I just am curious about his whole workshop idea too.
>>
>>51257969
He's getting there, but he seems very supervised by Linus in some of the videos.
>>
>>51258143
Linus is winning with his 50 bucks q6600/ROG board
>>
>>51257969
I checked him out. His builds are pretty crappy for the price. 8gb of RAM in a $300 gaming PC? What?
>>
>>51258214
Linus won't get stable 4 ghz on that q6600, also wasted money on second gpu. But mb/cpu/ram/2 sound cards combo for 60 cad is nice for sure.
>>51258297
Yeah, mostly trash.
>>
Really wondering, why they don't get any used workstations with adding gpu after? Something on 1366 will not break the bank.
>>
>>51258323
He's literally spending less than 250 for his whole setup while both Luke and Austin already spending over 500
>>
>>51258362
People on craigslist want a fortune for used workstations. If something came up they'd take it, but it hasn't.

Also Linus and Luke may be smart enough to realize they shouldn't be talking about such matters on such a wide public channel. Those systems are only cheap because the normies haven't caught on

Rate my ebay build

Base is a HP z600 workstation
>http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z600-WorkStation-2x-Xeon-5506-2-13GHz-Quad-Core-8-GB-Ram-1-TB-H-D-D-/291605329469?hash=item43e508363d:g:27QAAOSw0HVWDvrI

Comes with 8gb of ram and a 1 terabyte hard drive.

Replace the CPUs with two of this
>http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-XEON-E5630-2-53GHz-12M-Quad-Core-Processor-SLBVB-421-/111810494623?hash=item1a086cc09f:g:uVkAAOSwo6lWM6UL
Xeon E5630
Quad core with a TDP of 80 watts. You won't have to change the fans. You should be able to nab the CPUs for at most $20

So if I were building on a $500 budget I'd have $200 left over for a GPU. The z600 has a 650 watt PSU with a maximum of 18 amps on the +12v line, but you can combine lines to power a GPU with the use of molex adapters.

The z600 is a very compact system and using an open air cooler just won't work. There's not enough ventilation. A blower design is neccessary.

I am choosing a GTX 960 2gb for this because of the lower power draw. This will mean the fan will not have to work as hard to cool and you will get a quieter experience. The GTX 680 is slightly more powerful, but has a higher power requirement. The AMD HD 7950 is another option. Both of them are available within the budget on ebay right now. If you want to save a little more and wait until it comes up I think an AMD R9 380 is the ultimate best choice.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PNY-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960-/291612266246?hash=item43e5720f06:g:HEwAAOSwAYtWQBlB

The 960 is new and only costs 171.09 with shipping. It will come with a free game upon registration. This leaves $29 left over out of $500 to actually, ya know, buy some video games for your new computer to play with.

Pretty good idea to use a WS for the base, though most WS chassis aren't as 'standard' nor easiest to build in compared to consumer grade counterparts
>>
>>51259213
They're pretty much the same, you can learn the differences in a matter of minutes. It's more about doing the research beforehand and picking parts that will fit your usage rather than the typical dogma passed around (such as blower coolers being useless).
>>
>>51258389
What matters? what are you saying?

We really need a board for ecelebs.
>>
>>51259287
The more people buy something the higher prices sellers will charge for it.
>>
>>51259304
That would be rather stupid since ecelebs cover a range of topics I don't care about. And it would be the same for everyone else and their niche.
>>
>>51257485
What's up Linus? Why aren't you working on the kernel today?
>>
>>51259315
This.
I can get i5 workstations for less than $300 with 4 or 8gb ram and a 1tb or 500gb hard drive.

Toss it in a new case, change psu and grab a used 7950, have a new high end computer for less than $600 Australian.
>>
>>51259343
You can also sell the old case and GPU that came in it.
>>
>>51259367
Or keep it for a Linux shitbox.

I saw a lynnfield i3 + mobo + 4gb ram for $60 the other day.
>>
>>51257485
I think its really entertaining. they need to find a way to spice it up future seasons a bit as it might get stale, but otherwise I think they've done a pretty good job with it. I agree with the judge panel idea though, its very anticlimactic when they just run benchmarks

http://www.techbargains.com/deal/73329/alienware-alpha-deals

probably the most reasonably priced ayylmaoware for what you're getting. you can obviously build better specs out of $400 but it won't be near as compact nor include the windows license and suxbox controller

if it goes on sale during black friday, i might pick one up
>>
>>51257485
Season 2 was the best one since they weren't browsing on Craiglist all the time and actually thinking on how to get a working hand-made liquid cooler.
