What is a DAW?
Digital
Audio
Workstation

>What DAW is yours?

>How long you been on it?

>How long have you been into music?

>What genre do you play with the most?

>What Genre do you think you are best at?

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?

Bonus points:

>Do you plan to make Game OST later on?

1 simple rule I hope you can guys do:

please don't be assholes to those who have a different perspective on
another DAW, no matter what it is or how shitty it is. I know there are
some very laughable ones out there but ya know...
So please just be as helpful as you can.

Unless it's LMMS then you can laugh all you want.

>this is /g/ not /mu/ gtfo

We do not talk about the music as it is but how it's created and what we use and how to help
others get better

Ableton is FL backwards from what I've been told. I've tried it but FL is more me and people complain that it's "too easy" and too "baby."

Considering that I've heard music on Pandora from artists that make shit out of FL, there's nothing wrong with FL, It just makes it more convenient and I think /g/ hates anything easy or convenient

the Renoise 3.1 beta is pretty nifty, love the new digital filter DSP mainly
there's also a couple needed workflow changes that bother me a little, but I'll get used to it because it's actually better (namely, the sampler page has tab buttons for options instead of the big scrolling page)

kind of disappointed at how they screwed up the comb filter though (at the moment, it now operates in pitch mode instead of continuous frequency mode, and a handful of my tracks kind of depend on that -- they load and play fine in 3.1 because the 3.0 version is still there, I just have to copy/paste the old 3.0 DSP effect if I want to make anything in the 3.1 beta using it)

dude like a week or 2 ago I brought up Discordapp and all they could do is complain that I was shilling and I was actually trying to get those guys to test it out. We had a /g/ sever for a while and it was doing decent for like a week... but then people left and didn't show up, oh well.
But honestly, how easy it is? I think that's what they didn't like, you can literally make it look like an IRC now. You'd think that /g/ of all people would love it cause its completely private and Ddos proof.

>>51257288
nifty.
>>
>>51257267
Yeah I'm not really impressed with the comb filter change either. There is a tool which makes it really easy to use the old one though (as well as other old tools), just right click and Add Native.

>What DAW is yours?
Ableton Live (formerly) and Non DAW (current)

>How long you been on it?
Ableton probably about 5-6? years, Non about .75-1? I think.

>How long have you been into music?
I started freshman year in highschool on FL Studio so it's been awhile I guess.

>What genre do you play with the most?
Not sure, whatever you call using 80s synths with 7th chords and up and mostly a 4/4 beat. I like to make my synths make noise too.

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
I started in trance/psytrance style stuff but whatever I'm doing now is what I like.

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
Not really. Non is modular enough so that I can write new software to replace what I don't like about it. It's open source too so I can draw ideas from it and JACK is pretty easy to work with. I really want to write a copy of Ableton's plugins for JACK with ncurses and/or FLTK interfaces. There also needs to be a replacement for/copy of Ableton's time stretching and pitch shifting capabilities.

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Probably my Korg Polysix and Roland Juno 106, I can't decide. The DX7 II FD sounds pretty unique though. Whatever hardware synths I end up making will probably contend for that spot too. MS-20 filters are crazy though and Prophet 5's sound amazing but I have neither. There's a lot of synths out there to really have a favorite without trying them all.

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
I'll probably be doing this as long as I have my synths and computer.

Bonus points:

>Do you plan to make Game OST later on?
I really want to attempt to make a Touhou style game so I guess I could make music for that. If someone has a gmae that needs music and asked me I guess that's a possibility also.

> What DAW is yours?
Renoise and Ableton Live mostly, but not exclusively. It all depends on what I'm doing. Fuck, I still have an old FL studio installed to mess around with occasionally.

> How long you been on it?
Ableton about 4 years or so... Renoise... Longer, don't remember. Before Renoise I used to dabble with FastTracker II, and before that with other similar things.

> How long have you been into music?
On PC, a good 20 years now. Other things musical, dunno... 20-25 years

> What genre do you play with the most?
At the moment that would be drum and bass again. Dunno why

> What Genre do you think you are best at?
Nothing.

> Have you thought about changing up to something else?
I pick up whatever I feel like. I've played around with juke, had quite a bit of fun with UKG, even with straight up techno. Just do whatever you like, play around until you get tired of it.

> What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
My favourite synths are the korg volca series. They're very affordable and good value for the money.

> Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
The path as a career musician is not for me. I'd grow to hate it and I have a job that offers a more steady income.

> Do you plan to make Game OST later on?
No, but if someone wants to use something it's all in the creative commons, so they can.

>What DAW is yours?
FL Studio. Pirated until the fucking devs add FLAC export. Literally no excuse to not have already done this after 8 years of users requesting it. Shit makes my blood boil. Been wishing to find a better DAW than FL but everything out there isn't as intuitive as it, has a lack of features, or the piano roll isn't as top notch.

>How long you been on it?
4 years, going on to 5.

>How long have you been into music?
Ever since I've started playing Guitar Hero. Somewhere between 8-10 years.

>What genre do you play with the most?
I'm not partial to genres, but also I'm not a fucking fedora abstract shithead when it comes to music. I make whatever inspires me atm be it Ar Tonelico, J Dilla, Flylo, some anime music, or Undertale's soundtrack.

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
Best pieces I've made involved a piano accompanied with a cello, or solo piano. Classical I suppose? Though, I am quite fond of Waltz.

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
I do that all the time. Hardest part is getting my creative vision and the timbre of my sounds down to perfection.

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Tie between Massive/FM8. Though I like Kontakt more of the two even if that's considered a sampler.

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
Yup, there are a lot of opportunities to be made career-wise with music. Particular with mediums where music is used to enhance an experience. Most musicians are too hard headed/creatively inept to see them, nor want to expand their skill set to take advantage of them.

>Do you plan to make Game OST later on?

I've layed out mine like this for a while now, but I think there's lots of potential for improvement:

> --fooling around with sounds (basically short preset demos and the like)

Nope, sounds good and I think you know it, attention whore you!

Though I would prefer if the kick punched through the bassline more. Otherwise it could get monotonous over time. Really dig the lead sound.

As for darker, heavier D&B, there's loads and loads of tutorials on that on youtube and DOA. Even some of the big names explained some of their techniques.

But that's wrong. I've been trying to get into scoring (ANYTHING) for years and I assure you the competition is fierce. I scour the internet and jump on every possible opportunity. What I find is that anyone is a position to buy music is drowning under offers from highly skilled composers basically ready to work for free because they want exposure. It's a buyer's market.

Don't let this bring you down though, but know that if you want to make money with it you will need to be a hell of a businessman.
