What Linux distro should I run in a VM under VMware Workstation on Windows?
I've run Ubuntu for years (on a couple of servers and in VMs). Lately, it's kind of shit, though. Ubuntu Unity fucks everything up, I can't run in VMware's Unity (worst naming clash ever), I had to manually patch VMware tools to get shared folders working, etc.
VMware's documentation says:
>For Linux guests and hosts, verify that a modern version of Metacity or KDE is installed.
Ideally, I'd like:
* 3D acceleration
* VMware Unity working
* VMware Unity without freaky drawing caused by shadowed window borders in Linux
Most of the discussions out there are a couple of years out of date, so I thought I'd ask.

Arch with KDE
I'm seeing various people suggesting xfce online for use with VMware Unity. But how can xfce be compatible with VMware Unity?
Am I misunderstanding something? Is xfce built on Gnome or KDE?
>>51248544
use virtualbox

No chance. I used Virtualbox for years. It regularly corrupted entire VMs (not just snapshots). It was terrible at copying/importing VMs onto new installs, usually leaving me with a useless virtual machine.
VMware Workstation just werks.

No, Xfce isn't built on GNOME or KDE.
You can technically run Xfce on Metacity, though.

Good Lord, the kubuntu website is stunningly slow. I'm trying to download the ISO and it's trickling in. 5 hours left at the moment for a 1 gig file.

Thanks.

you probably did something wrong.
WORKSFORME

Who cares?
DOESN'TWORKFORME
VMware Workstation works flawlessly for me. Install new OS, copy over old VMs, open, "oh hey, was this copied or moved?" Done. Zero problems.

Going back to the original subject, you should try Mint if you like Ubuntu without Unity. They offer Cinnamon, Gnome 3, and Mate out of the box. Also, that vmware doc sounds a little outdated.

Huh?

I have mint on one box here. I just don't like it. No idea why, really.

Based on what?
