I've gotten my hands on an old netbook with very weak specs. 1GB of RAM and an Intel Atom CPU.
I'm thinking I'll run a simple floating WM like Openbox. What disto should I install on it? My options as I see it is Arch, Debian or Ubuntu minimal.
Anyone have experience running modern Linux on crappy old hardware?
Install Gentoo.

Sell it for $50 and get a refurb C2D.
>>51248279
Debian netinst + i3/awesome/openbox
>>51248279
Debian netinst or netbsd + openbox/icewm would be my recommendation.

To get actual work done: Debian, Fedora.
To fuck around: Puppy, TinyCoreLinux, etc.
I got a StinkPad with 192 MB RAM and a Pentium II
Wut do? The thin and powerful ThinkPad 600E notebook is a new breed of innovatively designed, reliable, easy-to-use mobile computer that translates form and function to new levels of sophistication but it has pig disgusting Windows on it as of now

Drop the trip, for starters. Don't write like you are twelve, too.

What trip?
Just yesterday I tried debian with only fluxbox. It does work but there are very few features. Id sat do the netinstall, then dont choose a DE or any extra packages. Just install openbox from the cli or try fluxbox too, Its also pretty light on resources.

I have a userscript replace names and trips with the poo emoji. Drop whichever you use.

What boot time do you get? From powered up to ready GUI.

care to share the script?

Post script, would use

xubuntu does pic related, but I hear it isn't *really* lightweight.

please make it open source under gpl
Vector Linux with MATE works nicely on a Pentium III, 900 MHz, 256 MB (I believe).
Browsing works okay (using Midori), as does DVD and ZSNES.

I dont remember exactly but it was probably around 30 sex.(including login)
Its an old 64 bit single core amd cpu from around 8 years ago I believe.
And I did install the 64-bit version. I think that does affect the speed a little. Im not entireley sure though.

To be clear. It worked well enough but I didnt keep it long enough to really test everything out. it was pretty responsive and all but I didnt install very much.
Also this same machine is running debian 8 with lxde and its is quite responsive. Only slows down when browsing but I have it set up as a home recording studio so that isnt a problem for me.
install gentoo
use a stronger computer such as your desktop to cross-compile packages for you
