You guys didn't tell me it'll be like this
I literally just opened my domain two days ago

How do these Chinese bots know my domain already?

i'd like to build/buy a NAS. Would a office server suffice? I could get one for cheap from the IT dept. and then just buy storage and add an SSD with the OS etc. How does it sound?

I have a freenas server. On it are jails which are like halfway vms it just has to run freebsd like freenas is built on it cannot run another os without something like virtuabox or something else running on the bsd.

So I have stuff on there that other people made like transmission and some video playing shit.

I however want to write my own python scripts and little programs so I can run them in a jail off the server. How do I do that? Can I just get into the jail and somehow install python in there? Then just run the programs?

I dont do much in bsd just windows and mostly linux these days. So the first thing I think of is using the cli to install whatever version of python is for that free bsd version. Is that about right?

not banning chinese IP's
Check your connections log, they tend to try to spam your machine with username:root all the time or common English names
>>
>>51250361
You need a jail manager bud. I could never get jails working in freenas or nas4free
>>
>>51249931
They just spam everything anon. Looking for a hole anywhere. I sometimes think about making a vm to let them in and see what they do.

I have two old ass HP-servers gl360 (G4)

http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-proliant-dl360/specs/

If i max out the RAM, 8GB would it be worth making them VM hosts?
im thinking of having perhaps two virtuals on each hw.
And if so, Should i use CentOS or Ubuntu?
The reason fo using VMs is that i do alot of different projects like Hackathons, Gamejams and LAN-parties and i use these servers as project servers but i need differnt configs on each project.
>>
>>51250780
Ultimate poorfag would be grabbing something like a DL360 G4 out of somebody's trash bin. Poorfagging in style would be getting a dual C2Q DL360 G5 off Ebay for $150.

The board that I currently use as my router used to be my storage server (before I replaced it with >>51248170).
I got it with 4GB of RAM on ebay for $65. It's fast enough to saturate a GbE with both samba and iSCSI.
>>
>>51251554
I got a rack server from a neighbor, but it doesn't have those hard drive bays on the front like most do.
If I want hotswappable hard drives, what do I do?
>>
>>51251636
Post pics of it.
If it has 5.25" bays on the front, you can buy 3.5" hotswap bays that you shove in there.

Don't those only go up to 4 cores?
Just get some 2011 stuff and get a used xeon for it, I've seen 10 cores go for $250 used.
>>
Hey /g/uys, I want to build a server for VM's and storage, but should I get a 12 core xeon now, or wait for the next gen?

I found a DL360 G4p with dual xeons clocked at 3,2GHz, 6gb of ECC ddr2 and 2x 146,8gb 10k u320 SCSI drives for ~75usd with shipping included (europoor btw). Is it a good enough machine for home environment use? Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge btw.
>>
>>51252094
Performance wise, probably yes, but efficiency wise I would say no.

They use a lot of power and are not efficient with said power.
>>
>>51252135
This. Google says Europe's average electricity cost is 26 cents/kWh. You're probably looking at $600USD/yr in electricty to run one of those just at idle, and it's just a dual Pentium 4.
If you're a poorfag who pays for his own electricity, certain "cheap" things aren't cheap.

Supermicro X7SPA-H, D510 version (D525 version is a little faster).

Also instead of buying an older used one, you can buy one of the newer ones which use Atom server SoCs which go up to 8 cores.

ESXi box with Intel(R) meme processor with maxed out 16GB RAM. Two datastores, HW RAID0 of 2x 15k SAS disks, HW RAID1 of 2x 2TB Hitachi Sata. A single RAID6 array of 8x 2TB Hitachi Satas, if I could I'd go back and do ZFS but shit was way too unstable back then.

Also have mixed bag of rack equipment, Juniper SRX router, semi professional L3 Dell switch, 15 yo IBM KVM. Can post pics if anyone cares.

>>51252754
its not an option, i cant find it on the site that i'm buying from (like ebay/craigslist/amazon had a child) and on ebay its insanely expensive
>>
>>51252893
Just search "supermicro atom board" on ebay.
Here's one with RAM included:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X7SLA-H-Motherboard-with-2GB-RAM-1-6Ghz-Atom-330-dual-core-/171909390280?hash=item2806991fc8:g:sCMAAOSwDNdV32U~
>>
>>51252909
>130usd

thats why i said that it's not an option. It's not easily aviable in my lovely country. I'd gladly buy it if i could get a reasonable deal on it (shipped from PL preferably).

also, my cable management ain't great but his is just plain bad.

What do you fags even do with these? House wide. Media Center and cloud storage?
>>
>>51254272
I want a lot of care-free high-speed storage but shoving a hardware RAID card in my PC shits up my cable management and ruins my boot times.

I also like having a dedicated VM host, so I can do things like compiling without using up all my desktop's CPU power, or things that I want to run 24/7 like a buttcoin node.
