Hello /g/
I want to buy a cheap thinkpad. just as a laptop i can program on and i dont have to worry too much if it breaks. i was thinking about the x61s. the only thing im worried about is only having the keyboard nipple. i like using the nipple but not all the time. is there another laptop much like the x61s but with the trackpad too? also which distro to use. i was thinking debian or something based on debian.
>/g/ how do I become like you?
I don't have a Thinkpad but the T420 is probably the best pick given you don't have severe autism that requires ancient designs.
If you want an X with a touchpad, you will have to step it up to an X201 atleast.
>debian or something based on debian
Are you new to linux? If so -> Mint, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Elementary OS . . .
If not -> Debian

I have used 'buntus for a while. whats different about debian? when i tried it it just seemed less bloated and i had to do drivers manually?

Less user friendly, more interesting for advanced users.

Might as well install arch then.

Debian is for employed people. It's not 'I have nothing else to do with my life' tier.
If you do end up installing debian, try doing it manually if you don't have that experience yet.

what do you mean manually? through command line?

So employed people care less about security than a bunch of archtists, and also mindlessly pull in broken releases of systemd such as 227-2 that cause a full CPU halt on a fresh install? Getting a job in security should be a cinch.

but the 430 is objectively better
unless you have severe autism that requires ancient keyboards

I guess my uni's admin (who also is a lecturer there) has nothing to do then, since he installed arch on every computer.

I have an X220t and its super competent. You can pick it up or the non tablet version for ~$200
