Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
----
P50/70 release is imminent.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

So /g/, I think I'm going to fall for the T420 meme. There's one listed on my local Kijiji now for $350 CAD (about $263 US), sure it's a bit pricey, but it also has the dedicated NVS 4200M graphics card, and if I buy locally then I can avoid the rape that comes with eBay international shipments. Processor is an i5-2520M, 4 gigs of RAM, 500 GB hard drive.

Now, I'm selling my gaming desktop since I'm not playing the latest games anymore, but I'd still like to run stuff like TF2, Minecraft and Starcraft 2 on low to medium settings at a decent framerate. Would this hardware be capable of that? I don't really have a benchmark to compare myself, since the only other laptop I've got is an old C2D Dell Latitude E6500 with integrated graphics.

Do you guys recommend thinkpad as a first laptop ever bought? Currently I have a hp550 i got for almost 20 bucks from a dumb bitch who thought it was dead because it didn't power on. Turns out, the power cord connector had a fucked wire.

I currently have an addiction towards dark souls 2,and I need one which can take it to close-to-high levels.
Everything else I'll do on it will be excel spreadsheets and programming.
What's the best I can buy? Also, I live in a country where thinkpads are basically unheard of. That means shipping.
Got a budget of 500 bucks.
Help pls.
>>
>>51244296
Most source games and definitely memecraft can be run on a T420, even on its integrated graphics

Starcrumpets I'm not too convinced but on lowest settings you should be able to get smooth 60fps

It's a pretty good price for those specs, and you can upgrade the RAM later and get a caddy to load up a SSD in tandem with the HDD
>>
>>51244299
T420 blaze it

You should be able to get one within $250-350 and coupled with shipping should still fall within your budget
>>
How much should an IPS screen for X220 cost? On ebay there are ones for 45$ and 295$.

If somebody could link me a reliable seller, that'd be great.
>>
>>51244299
no. contrary to what NEETs on 4chan will tell you, they're not worth it.
>>
>>51244296
My T420 plays TF2 okay, a Minecraft clone just fine, and Bethesda games surprisingly well, everything including Skyrim.

It's not great at battery life or performance when gaming while not plugged in, but honestly, no laptops are good at gaming when not plugged in.
>>
>>51243717

thank you good sir for your recommendation.

may I ask why xfce but not cinnamon?

also when should I migrate to an SSD:

>or before?
>does it even matter?
>>
>>51244402

>>
>>51244452
you want to seriously game on a laptop? you're going to have to shell out some bigger bucks for a gaming laptop or one that has a significant processor, 8gb RAM, good cooling, and a legitimate dedicated recent geforce GPU. sorry.
>>
>>51244324
Thanks for the insights. I figured Minecraft was more of a CPU-intensive program, while Starcraft is more GPU-intensive. If it's really unplayable I guess I could just go back to Brood War.

>>51244403
May I ask what sort of settings you have for TF2, and what kind of framerates you're getting?

I'm currently able to play everything at max settings, 1080p resolution, I'm obviously not expecting this going forward but I also don't want to be playing 800x600 with lowest settings and DirectX 8 just to get decent framerates.
>>
>>51244522
Low but not lowest settings, native 1600x900 resolution, getting framerates of anywhere from 20-40 FPS depending on how much action was going on onscreen.

I don't actually like TF2 though, so I didn't play it for long enough to get a good picture of how it ran.
>>
>>51244567
That was with integrated graphics, right? I imagine the nVidia card would probably produce better results even if it is totally antiquated by today's standards.
>>
>>51244299
If you're into gayman look into Asus ROG gl551.
You can get one for about $600, they come with the whole shebang, i7, 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, 1tb hdd, 960m, 15.6", 1080p.
Also look into the lenovo Y series.
Other than that, if it's DaS 2 you want to play, and you can deal with silky smooth 30fps, on mid settings, probably anything will do, as long as it's an intel 4000 or better, so that's your $300 area.

Other than that, for $500 I can recommend getting a w520/530 if you're lucky, or just a specced out t420, will run DaS 2 on high, but not much more than that.
>>
>>51244702

>>51244737

Funny, I have a Y50 and I'm actually looking to go back to my old W500 because I hate the terrible keyboard, the terrible screen, and the terrible touchpad. It doesn't even game all that well, I mean yeah you can play a bunch of stuff on medium and high no problem, but I get real noticeable screen tearing issues that are absent from my W500 on the same games.

I personally really like the W series. It's a real sort of "fuck off" laptop, even if the old ones are about as powerful as today's ultrabooks.

I did worse than a lot of my friends in university, and for a while I listened to their "your life is over" doomsday mantra, but after talking to the right people and going through several internships, I managed to get myself in a position where I got excellent on-the-job training and now I've got a better position than any of them. As long as you're reasonably competent and actually smart, you have nothing to worry about. That being said, you're free to continue doing whatever it is you're up to, Cheng.

I use a surface pro 3 with the little type-cover. It's very light, powerful, the battery lasts a long time, and the keyboard works very well. Admittedly, I really don't touch the digitizer functions etc but that's extra. Hell, even some chromebooks with good keyboards are more impressive than any thinkpad I've touched. Their designs are so idiotic in comparison to what we have now. They're inefficient, the keyboards aren't that impressive, thick, heavy.. just very inefficient designs for what they toss as "business/professional" features. I am a professional. I never looked at a thinkpad and thought that it was the best choice, because they just aren't from a design and efficiency perspective through engineering principles and basic logic.
>>
>>51247042
Well, the main reason /g/ spergs over thinkpads is because they're poor, and thinkpads cost close to nothing when taking account the hardware.
Sure it's not the most impressive laptop design-wise, but the price point is extremely nice, and for light use it's just enough.

Also I must say that the versatility of a thinkpad is much greater than the one of the surface pro, maybe if we were talking surface book, but right now we're comparing the capabilities of a full on pc and a glorified tablet, and the surface book costs five times what a surface pro does, and ten times what a t420 costs.
>>
>>51247146
The Surface Pro 3 is a full PC. I don't know what you're shilling on about, but you're wrong. They're more powerful than ThinkPads.

You'd have to install the same version as on the sticker. If it's an OEM version, you'd probably need to order a replacement restore disk from lenovo. I believe that you can use each serial once something like every 18 months.

>>

>I was wondering if I could reinstall win7 and use the serial on the sticker
Yes, I just did this on my T420 a few days ago and it worked fine. You need the same version as the one in the sticker, though. I just downloaded the Win 7 ultimate iso and removed the ei.cfg from it (google it) which allowed me to choose the version upon installation.
>>
>>51247836
Most of the time, if it's an actual serial, it'll just werk. If not, you can call into microsoft tech support and get a working key if you've already got a key. Just feed them a line of bullshit about how your system crashed and you lost everything shortly after installing.
It might actually be 6 months instead of 18. I definitely remember it was a half year increment, I just don't quite remember if it was .5 or 1.5

You can find pretty good deals on ebay. Espcially with ones that boot to BIOS. I guess some sellers think that depreciates value (which I guess it does if you're a windows guy) .
Sometimes you'll find some without a HDD but even after the cost of buying one of your own it will still come out as a great deal. So just be patient and lurk ebay for a few days.
>>
>>51247762
Yes, and it works even better. You can create multiple virtual cables, take two speaker outputs and put them on one omnidirectional cable.

I use it to do things like talk and pay music over Skype at the same time.

Only deal breaker you might have is the repeater program has to stay open while you use it, and that's used to put one audio source onto another.
>>
>>51247696
The model number is the same, both are used, probably the condition in which the device is, or maybe original purchase date.
>>
>>51247833

I just want stereo mix so that I can play guitar over Omegle and stuff like that and have it sound the same. if VAC will do that, I'll very happily buy an X220 over some HP Stream x360 thing for $240 at Best Buy.
>>
Do the IPS X220's have worse battery life because of the IPS?
>>
>>51248065
Yup. All you gotta do is in Omegle set your input to a Virtual Audio Cable and in Windows use a VAC repeater, put your speaker output onto the VAC.

Presto, whatever comes through your speakers now goes through as a microphone.

I haven't looked at it myself, but seeing as you describe yourself as "seriously poor", I have to ask if you actually need it? I'm guessing it has 4 GB already and it may well be that would suffice without pains, depending on your use case.

My L420 from 2012. I haven't had a single problem with it.

Anyone else have a L-series Thinkpad here?
