I know 1440p is great if you don't want to pay exorbitant amounts for a functional 4k setup, but are 144hz monitors worthwhile or just a meme? For games and for general stuff.

Meme. FPS players use it for minor benefit at the highest level.
Anything else is placebo. You'll get responses from people with buyer's remorse though.
144hz vs 60hz is a lot like 30FPS vs 60FPS.
Not a meme, 120/144hz is the best upgrade you can make. Seriously much more responsive, and smoother.

144hz is only good if your hardware can dribe that kind of framerate. which aint easy even at 1080p max setting, let alone 1440p. i prefer the game looking pretty at consistent 60fps.

Its not a meme. There is definitely a higher sense of fluidity and smoothness with 120 Hz, assuming your GPU can deliver such frame rates.

just look how blurry the 60fps is. At 120hz it isn't blurry and moves across smoothly.
I say moving from 1080 to 1440 looks like putting your glasses back on after cleaning them well after a long time. Best way I can describe it.
Question: do 144hz monitors have any kind of benefit when displaying 30/60fps content? Obviously you are not getting full use of your refresh rate but I'm wondering if things any smoother than 60fps on a 60hz monitor.

All i can tell you is that the difference between 60 and 120 is very visible in regards to when you scroll webpages and the words and letters are much more clearly visible as you are scrolling, compared to being blurry as you scroll.

If you play fast paced games like CSGO they're a must, pretty much.
Otherwise, it's nice, but you can live without it.
I think if you can run most games at 144hz you might see a benefit from it.
Either that or if you are trying to compete at the very highest possible level and don't care much about visuals, because it degrades the image a reasonable amount
