facebook will just figure out a way to disable the site to users with adblockers, they dont really need to get them made illegal.

Although this blame the customer route that corporations are going really bothers me. They should look within and find why customers hate ads so much and try to work around their customer base. Not just blame them for their lost revenues and basically cry about it. You can't ever blame the customer, or get them to "change", you need to work around them
>>
Comcast wants to implement data caps that won't influence traffic congestion, say you can pay extra each month to avoid the cap.

Big sites are crying because they can't shove ads down our throats due to ad blockers; Youtube personalities constantly weep about their livelihoods being at stake from viewers using adblock.

Novice internet users are eating up the adblock hate and give me shit if they see that I am using one.

It's all gone so very wrong.

Like ants, ants taking from a mountain of sugar. Regular pest control has failed, it's time to activate plan B.
Ad blocking is a crime, it's theft plain and simple. I have consulted with multiple major industry players and they all agree with the statement. Mr. President, and the American people, it's time to stop being lied to and end this madness. More and more people are unknowingly made to use ad-blockers, losing the jobs of millions; this is nothing other than financial holocaust.

I'm not seeing them specifically say their service will be particularly impacted. Just financial results. Obviously finances impact the company and product to some degree, but you would think they'd be smarter about how they are selling this pitch, and at least try to make it sound like the product's functionality or services will be harmed by this.

Good thing 76% of Facebook's revenue comes from mobile, where you can't block ads in their apps. Meanwhile Google is getting fucked because their revenue comes from desktops and iPhones mostly (iPhone generates 3x more ad revenue for Google than Android does). Ad spending is going mobile, and Apple is actively fucking Google on the iPhone. Facebook is fine on iPhone and Android though.
>>
The funny thing is. I wouldn't mind turning my adblocker off it it was stuff like the j-list adds on 4chan.

Like, a non offensive, properly themed single still image link to a legit non-malicious site is okay. A 5 second add if you want to watch a short video clip or a blinking flash banner leading to some shady porn site is not.

There is/are system wide adblockers for iOS, but the iOS content blocker is Safari only, it doesn't affect other apps.

System wide adblocking only occurs on Android if you root your device.

In all system wide adblocking on iOS and Android is probably a very small percentage.

Have you ever seen the ads facebook displays ?

Its for the stupidest products ever or just general rip offs.

Like "0AKLEY" glasses

Does FB charge per impression or per click ? because I don't know who clicks on any of that shit.

The industry did this to themselves,
they couldn't police themselves to show acceptable ads and they became more and more annoying
is it any wonder people install adblockers ?

>>51235905
It won't count for anything if there is no law they are breaking though. The courts will throw it out.

Even if the adblock creators don't defend themselves they will still win.

Also, Apple has more money than Facebook and they would be on the adblock creator side because they are facilitating adblocking on their devices.

Over a billion people use facebook, you cna bet your ass people click the ads and buy the products. Even without that FB has all the data they could ever possibly want to be able to target ads at specific people. so even if they don't get as many clickthroughs the people buying the ads know the ads are going to the exact audience they want.

I get the obfuscation thing, but giving them money automatically? At that point, I'm not sure they are about your individual profile, but are more interested in your addon, since it gives them an insane amount of advert click revenue.
>>
>>51237024
It depends what you're using an adblocker for. If it's to deny a site its clicks, then yes. If it's to prevent being tracked, then no.
>>
>>51237024
if enough people use it the companies paying for ads are going to lose money

it devalues the price of a click making companies pay less for ads and slowly making ads useless

good companies will find other ways to adapt and make money.

>What I find remarkable is the way both sides of this debate seem to simply assume the large-scale capture and exploitation of human attention to be ethical and/or inevitable in the first place. This demonstrates how utterly we have all failed to understand the role of attention in the digital age—as well as the implications of spending most of our lives in an environment designed to compete for it.

>>51235905

can't stop progress

or in other words, there's no way to stop adblockers from being created and distributed. The MPAA tried the same thing with piracy.

A normie tech site explained it very well. People use adblockers because ads take up a huge amount of space and bandwith and slows your phone's browser down. Enough where even normies want to block ads especially to save on their data plans. The recent trend of bloated js websites doesn't help either.

Gabe Newell realized this too, he realized that you can't stop piracy, only compete with it. Hence why Steam was made to be as convenient as possible so that people would not resort to piracy.

In the end, if there's a demand for a service it will be provided somehow.

Facebook has become toxic.
If it's not about ads it's about a drop in users. People are getting real fed up with Facebook. It's a fad that's slowly dying. I see more and more people talk about deleting their Facebook account. With a sense of pride. Like people that say they only shop at whole foods or drive a Prius.

I have at least some sympathy for the foundation of this jaywalking law though. As mentioned in that article we went through this phase of introduction of motor vehicles where they took over roads that were originally designed for slower traffic and shared with foot traffic, and new roads were poorly designed to accommodate both.
So as a way to try and get these two parties working in some form of harmony they bring in this law, and as usual with laws of this type there is generally a measure of discretion on the part of the officer as to whether to fine or warn the individual.
Probably what we have seen though is that city traffic has actually gotten slower due to just congestion which has made jaywalking less dangerous anyway.

Personally I live in a country where there is no law against jaywalking, and I see people standing on the side of the road waiting to cross, five or ten metres away from a zebra crossing where, by law, traffic must stop to allow pedestrians to cross.

You could probably argue that the law against jaywalking and the law of stopping to allow a person to cross a zebra crossing to be equally useless, but we're trying to get squishy humans and one tonne moving boxes to share this space in a harmonious manner, and I believe both were put in place with this in mind but perhaps the law has served its purpose or needs to be reviewed, that's another matter.

Every cyclist should receive a fine daily, on principle, though.

Projecting much? The people who use facebook are the ones with no real friends, that's why they need facebook, people who's only value in life comes from showing off inherited socioeconomic status and made up stories about their daily lives. I understand that especially in american upper-middle class the act of keeping up appearances is very important.

You think you can keep pretending to be social and people in your facebook circles think that you are, but it's a paradox, all of them are the same kind of lonely losers that you are.

Normal people see through that and laugh at you, thinking that you're fake and autistic as fuck. Now go ahead and write an opinion piece on pseudo-liberal politics in your facebook feed.

Speaking from experience, I lost a whole lot of high-school friends and acquaintances when I refused to get on Facebook. It's not like I hated the concept of FB, it just sounded daunting and intimidating to me.
My new circle of friends know how to reach me via phone, e-mail, whatsapp and telegram, but I'd be lying if I told you I'd have more people to hang out with if I had actually used Facebook back then.
I mean, you don't share your phone number with anyone, you more easily share your profile. Facebook didn't replace vis-a-vis conversations or your phone contact book. It just added a new layer.

That's what I'm saying though, that facebook is the layer of socializing between friend-whom-you've-given-your-numer-to and mere acquaintance. Like some sort of public plaza with people you sort of not care about, but not complete strangers. That's facebook, that's their niche. I did stop caring years ago, but the other idiot is implying that people on facebook have no other means to socialize and contact people which is clearly bullshit, you don't see them tossing away their landlines. I don't see any harm on curating a group of acquaintances via a social network, despite me not doing it.
Thanks for sort of agreeing with me though.

Unlike most of /g/, I'm not against ads on principle. I unblock ads on sites I trust and visit frequently, including 4chan. My issue has always been the malware and drive by installs they cause. Many years back I read a very convincing article asking users to disable adblock, stating that ads are much less intrusive than they used to be. I disabled it. Things weren't too bad on most sites regarding the annoyance factor. However, it only took a couple days before I got a virus. I quickly wiped the machine, and reinstalled with adblock again. Until advertisers can stop with the malware, viruses, and other garbage, I will continue to block ads. They have abused the platform and now crying foul despite the fact that there is much more legal precedence that what THEY are doing is illegal by install malicious software through security vulnerabilities in Flash and web browsers.
>>
This is why I don't like to share tips like adblocking with normies. Once it spreads we're the ones who get fucked.
>>
>our future financial results may be harmed

>>
>>51252185
Agreed. I like to keep nice things to myself. Normies get sex. Why should it be that normies get the nice things we have, but keep the sex all to themselves? If I'm going to be a wizard for the rest of my life, I at least want to have a smoother computing experience than all those assholes who have friends and a social life. If they don't want to invite me to the parties they go to, why should I share any useful knowledge with them?

>>51254815
At that point, some of the most attractive portions of ad blocking (malware protection, privacy, page speed increase) are all defeated. The attack surface is slightly smaller (no image parsing, maybe the layout engine) for malware, but that's it.

At least zכטkerטלrפ can't sell my eyes then.
>>
>>51238634
>the legality of ad block will surely get brought to court.

And the advertisers will lose. It's my computer. I decide which requests it will accept and how it will display content. There's no way around that. If you don't want me to access your content without being served ads, that's your technical problem to figure out. Though if you do find a way, I'll probably just forgo visiting your site altogether.
>>
Query: If the supply of people who can view ads and lowered, why haven't the prices just gone up to compensate? Why doesn't supply and demand apply here?
>>
>>51232298
I don't "block" anything. I decline to request that they send me ads in my browser.
