I've got around 300 floppy disks laying around. Is there are practical use for them in this day and age, or should I just bin them?

>Is there are practical use for them in this day and age

Yes but probably none that you need to worry about, unless you have a programmable weaving machine, or an industrial CNC lathe...

>should I just bin them?

Make art from them.
>>
>>51228880
I have an old diagram to make them into fire starters, but you would still need something to spin the disk.
>>
Archive all the data found on each one then toss them.
>>
>>51228880

i'll take em if you dont want em.
>>
the only practical use it to use them on old machines that only support them (old computers, various industrial machines, midi systems, etc)

for anything new enough to handle for example, usb drives/sd cards/etc, no, they're pretty useless

At my university, they still use them in some of the oscilloscopes and lab equipment. I'll take some if you want to get them off your hands.

Or you're Japanese.

Japanese love them some old shit like floppy disks.
>>
>>51228880

I'll buy them for a dollar

Use them as a device to protect privacy. How many people would be thinking about exploits for floppy drives? Those juicy, unthought about networks.

There is absolutely no use for them. Even ancient machines can use flash drives via a hardware floppy emulator

Not a floppy *disk* but your post reminded me of this:

This has to be a joke.
>>
>>51229950
it is

1. microsoft uses DMF for floppy distribution, or used to, this is 1.68MB per disk, the picture shows "1.44MB", the standard capacity for a 2HD disk
2. the picture suggests a set of 3711 disks, even at 1.44MB this is ~5.22GB, much bigger than the windows 8.1 DVD itself

it's faked, and not even done very well
>>
>>51230123

You're making an assumption that every single disc is filled to the max capacity of 1.68MB with the DMF format filesystem and that would be incorrect. I still actually have a set of Windows 95 floppies, the first to use the DMF format, and not every disc is filled to capacity - that's not how it works, son.

The original Windows 95 file distribution is about 36.7MB in size - that's the entire OS. The set of floppies I have - in DMF format - are a count of 38 - if they were maxed out that would be just over 60MB of data, but it's not. If I copy the contents of the 38 floppies to a hard drive folder, when I'm done it'll be about 36.1MB because a) the hard drive is using a file system with 4KB sectors so less slack and b) the floppies use a 12-bit file system which creates just a bit more slack when the files exist on the surface of the floppies.

This isn't that fucking hard to figure out, really.

I really wish there was a usb adapter for my 5.25 + 3.5 combo drive
>>
>>51228880
Pinch a second hole into them and use them in some 16bits Amiga for occasional needs.
>>
>>51230317
err isn't it the other way around?
with hd floppies having the second hole?
>>
Children in Africa could eat those floppy disks
>>
>>51228880
If I had that many floppies I would hotglue them on my door forming a swastika
>>
>>51230278
Floppies no longer supported out of the box in Windows.

you're welcome

I threw out all my floppies in like 2003, the fuck you guys doin with that shit still?
>>

>>
>>51230451
Also skip a number or two so they keep looking for more gay porn and gore
>>
>>51228880

if you use an airgapped machine, floppies are preferable to usb sticks for passing data around. usb has too many problems.
>>
>>51230768
Why not something faster and bigger like hotswapping in/out a hard drive?
>>
>>51230798

hard drive firmware can be replaced

>>51228880
They make pretty okay sun blockers.
>>
>>51228880
I have a box in my garage with probably a couple of thousand old floppies. 3-1/2, 5-1/4, even some 8" that I think I used in old IBM and maybe DEC minicomputers. Totally useless to me, but I can't force myself to trash them. Hello, my name is anon and I am a hoarder...
>>
Just sell them on ebay
>>
Open floppy disk
Get lucifer
Get some powder of top lucifer
Put on disk inside floppy
Assemblee floppy
Put in computer
Watch computer smoke

Profit:)
>>
>>51228880
Place drinks on them in the off chance someone besides your mom actually visits you.
>>
>>51230250

wait a minute now

you mean to tell me that back in windows 95 days, people actually installed windows 95 from floppies.

get the fuck out man! i never really thought about it but it makes sense since i guess cd drives were still relatively new.

Burn the Windows 10 iso on the 300 floppy discs and sell them to some NEET in Japan wtih a Pentium III and floppy drive looking to upgrade his Windows 98.
>>
>>51232145
Hahahahaha

I was going to suggest a backup or a music library you can lend to friends.
>>
>>51231984
There was a thing called a zip drive too

that had like 100 mb
>>
300 floppy disk raid.

Do it now faggot.
>>
>>51228880
Take out the disks and smoke them.
That's how Pawl died, right?
>>
>>51232513
>a music library you can lend to friends.
this, OP!
If someone asks you something like
>cool, can you please give me that track?
>Can I please have this movie
or whatever, just say
>sure, but I aint have time yet, I give it to you tomorrow
And then you give them a mp3 of the song, reencoded to 1.44mb, or a trash bag full of floppies, with the movie in parts.

Or, if you work, and someone sends you an E-mail, asking you to just mail them the DOC or PDF, put it on the floppy, and mail that to them.
>>
Keep them.

In about 20 years, all forms of data storage will be compromised by the NSA, except floppies, tape drives, and other obsolete technologies.
