I had a family come into my shop with a shitty windows 7 laptop with a fried hard drive. They were dirt poor - couldn't even afford the new hard drive AND the windows 7 serial number had worn off.

I gave them a shitty refurbished drive, and ubuntu and sent them on their way, they came back saying it was great, since it was essentially an internet machine.

Of those two, Mint.

But xubuntu is better than either. Stock Ubuntu is crap, but you can make it great with a small amount of work.

Do not use Unity. If you use Unity you accept satan as your true master and automatically reserve a place in hell (via amazon web services).

mint can come with kde, mate, or xfce, its meant to be ubuntu + added stability from having another set of people take a look at the packages they let through, not ubuntu + cinnamon
they also offer a similar thing to Debian: LMDE, i hear it's decent , but i prefer mint kde for the PPA support.

Unity suck ass, Mint is good for new users but if you're already using linux quite some time even just as a normal user you find it outdated as f!@#.
Arch if you're advanced user, Debian if you feel like it.
I don't like Fedora and SuSe but you might.
>>
Of the two, Ubuntu, but only because of the repos. I liked Mint a lot but only used it for a few days because so many packages I use routinely were horrendously out of date, so hello Kubuntu 15.10.
>>

Mint is just Ubuntu with a bunch of bloatware, so I would go for Ubuntu.

You can install another DE, so you don't even have to use unity.
>>
>>51209797
it just breaks as well. Antergos is bad idea
>>
>>51209797

no, one year, never had problems.
>>
>>51202812

No DE is perfect really. Everyone ends up with one they prefer to the rest, but very few people are 100% satisfied. XFCE is the first one I really used long term, and it's the one I kept returning to afterwards. Lately though I'm really impressed with Fluxbox, and think I may prefer it.

The thing about it is that it blows out of the box. It almost feels broken even. Someone new to *Nix, or someone who doesn't care about customization would probably hate it. If you go to a WM expecting it to be a full DE by default you will definitely hate it. If you do like to customize, and don't mind manually editing files you can build exactly the desktop you want on top of it.

Xubuntu is also good, but Mate is just rock solid.

Mint is just a poorly pre-riced & bloated version of Ubuntu, with a tendency to break due to the developers "mintification" of the Ubuntu packages.

True, but at least this way Ubuntu is accessible for everyone. Shuttleworth has invested an insane amount of money on Ubuntu if it weren't for the ads Ubuntu had to be made a paid product. Variants of Ubuntu like Kubuntu for example that are also being advertised on their official website do not have product suggestions based on search results so at least they're giving you an option but that option isn't made too clear of course.
