Apart from the butt thing, this is exactly what I've been doing for years. New laptop every couple of years for shit all money is always fun.

don't ever upgrade OS X to a big new release.
If it came with 10.9.1, upgrading to 10.9.2 is fine, but upgrading to 10.10.1 will make it deteriorate.
If you aren't going to buy a new one every 18 months, Apple does not give a fuck about you.

2010 macbook air with yosemite reporting in, apart from the SSD being as slow as a 5400rpm hard drive, I have no complaints whatsoever.
Also driveDX still reports 96% lifetime of the SSD
