I got an AS in Computer Network Management
2+ years experience working as a field technician doing everything from residential bs to medium sized business network cabling and server setups.
I know my way around Win, Mac and Linux.
Only job offer in a 3 month period in LA has been part-time grave shift at data center to basically sit around and make sure nothing explodes for $12.00 an hour.
Am I worth that little /g/?

I program audio via C++, totally outdated nowadays in the recording industry, but that's how old school foley sound and video game audio was made. It tied into my audio engineering major so its really Audio Engineer/Programming. I tried the music industry for a year, and discovered everyone is a pompous cock at every recording studio and thought my time was better spent buying them cigarettes and coffee than actually staying in studio assisting on projects and or training me. So I said fuck that and went back to school to get my AS, I'm now maybe 1-2 months away from taking my CompTIA N+ cert, but I really need a job in the interim (obviously). I just moved down to LA cause I broke up with my girl of 6 years and I have family down here. Didn't want to stay where I was previously cause it was financially non-viable to handle the lease/rent and bills on my own + my own bills.

What would you classify as real experience? Is my 2+ years working for a small IT business not real experience? I did a lot of shit, im not necessarily "specialized" but I can pull my weight and others as well, and im fairly knowledgeable in general. If you gave me two weeks of training on whatever you need me to accomplish I could get it done. But maybe you're right. I wad making $12.50 regular at my old job, but making $35.00 on billable time.

Got a Bsc in Computing then spent a year unemployed trying to get a Software Dev role even though I didn't really like programming to that level, Ended up falling into a Service Desk role due to lack of effort which was horribly paid (£16k a year).
Spent 2 years there learning how not to be an austist with Users Before moving onto a tech support role at a financial software house for £23k a year.
The pays not great but the job itself is pretty fun, I get to do lots of different stuff like setting up test servers or writing SQL scripts to unfuck a customers databases or guide then through setting up diagnostic tools etc.
Thankfully the Company haven't started with the ITIL no fun allowed b.s. where they silo everything.
Part of me still wants to do Linux sysadmin stuff though.

your 16k paid better than what I'm getting offered. Much of my job was 2 years of dealing with a variety of customers and users as well. I did the field technician work, did the support tickets, did the invoice, did the billing, did the statements, setup appointments, scheduled appointments, booked the calendar, took/made the calls, took/replied to the emails; repaired computers, built computers, setup networks, setup servers, pulled cable, drove fucking everywhere for 2 years. Honestly the most miserable part of the job was the driving. A minimum of 4 hours a day in my car driving around to 2-3 client appointments. This job for me would be an intro to Linux sysadmin stuff.

I got bugger all job offers/interviews till I setup a LAMP Server using a minimal Centos install, slapped teamspeak,ftp and WordPress on there documented everything I did in the WordPress blog put my CV on there also.
Pretty straight forward but it shows employers you have an interest beyond getting paid.

Now they just have them saved in applications you can run to create whatever you want. They're built in to all sorts of shit now adays. Most video game devs don't even bother hiring audio programmers anymore cause they can just get the animators and shit to put in these sound files and to have them run when they need them to fairly easily.

Desktop support job sitting next to network operations manager. Told him that I would be totally fine doing special projects for him, learning whatever he wanted to teach me, he taught me for a year before leaving the company (tried to take me to a startup with him). Solution: Get a skill someone wants to pay you for or start your own business (protip: this is way easier if you move to a state that isn't run by pinkos - I had two botched business attempts in Cali before I up and moved to a red state and got the same exact business model off the ground).
I actually advise against more school. Go work somewhere that's going to get you demand skills. The support jobs do suck, but in combination with self-study you can parlay them into admin work which is much better paying. I know because I now pay a few of these assholes and they command a better salary than most of my other employees.
