Use this thread to discuss the intricacies and fun in exploring hardware and software that simply doesn't want you to do so, whether by purpose or just through sheer bad design.
The focus is usually videogame hardware and software, but anything else that fits the criteria is more than welcome.

Anyone have experience with modding a GBA SP? Any links to resources for SID chip mods?
>>
oh shit another new bread.
>>
Was there ever any progress in getting homebrew to run on Xbox 360 slims?
>>
>>47782124
RGH allows for running unsigned code no problem.
It's been a non-issue for years now.
It's on par if not better than the smc hacks of old.

>Something like Nintendon't is actually already happening on the 3DS. I recently confirmed and did a bit of documentation on the 3DS' ARM7 CPU, something we previously thought was implemented in software on the ARM11. The 3DS actually has all the hardware for the DSi AND GBA on board. That means it's got 3 CPUs, up to 6 cores, and 3 GPUs. Crazy thing.
>It's kinda funny - that means the GBA VC is the only virtual console to not use emulation.
>>
Good thread, OP!
>>
>>47781910
Nice, another thread.
Don't you mean obscure hardware, instead of obfuscated?
Obscure is something not very well known, obfuscated is something completely different.
>>
>>47784032
Writing homebrew software often means overcoming a purposely obfuscated and undocumented instruction set.

They go hand in hand.
>>
>>47784246
Really? I thought obfuscated mostly referred to software, but I'm not a native speaker so I'm not gonna argue about something I'm possibly wrong about.
>>
>>47784246
CPU instruction sets in consoles are standard ones.
>>
>>47784246
This may be a stupid question but do consoles support a high-level language to make things easier for developers?

http://retrorgb.com/rgbmonitors.html

Posting about RGB monitors with RGB modded consoles. The site is a good resource for learning about how you can play older consoles with the highest quality video output on enterprise-grade Sony Trinitron PVM and BVM series monitors.

Picture compares picture quality of various analog video outputs from consoles and why outputting RGB is that much better than Composite, etc.

Yeah sure, you'll have a SDK that will include a compiler and libraries.

>>47784776
Something I forgot: check the pastebin in the OP, it has some documentation for the 3DS SDK docs.

Thanks for linking it.
Is the anon who was developing the gta 5 mod still around?

>scanlines

I never seen them on any of my tv screens, I don't undestand why people love them.

PAL by the way
>>
>>47787000
Because shit was made with scanlines in mind so if you don't use scanlines you're not seeing what the designers intended

Does anybody have a dieshot of the GBA's CPU?
>>
>>47787085
Good thing it has comments, is this from the pokemon disassembly?
>>
>>47784285
obfuscated = deliberately made obscure, e.g., nintendo using security screws and making people reverse-engineer cartridge pinouts, memory, writing programs for the CPU because no official documentation exists in public.
>>
>>47787236
I thought maybe he meant less known consoles or games, thanks for the explanation.
>>
>>47787225

yes, this is the file:

>>
>>47787275
Thanks.
It's amazing that people managed to disassemble it and put all the code together again so well.
>>
I'm in R4ndom tutorial 16b and I'm just lost with that Virtual Protect thingy. Send help.
>>
>>47787795
How long did it take you to get to the 16th?
>>
>>47788032
I don't know, whenever I found a bit of free time, I'd do one.
>>
>>47788290
Have you found them to be explained well? I'll start reading them but am unsure whether they're above my skill level.
>>
>>47788354
Yes. He usually goes into extreme detail to show you how and why.

You should know a bit of assembly of course.
>>
>>47787000
I don't remember seeing any significative scanlines myself. Also PAL.

Is that a NTSC only thing?
