The most neglected technology in the 21st century
>>
>>47780993
well it sure as shit isn't battery technology that's for sure.
>>
would be cool to be able to spin pedals for like 10 minutes to charge all electronics in the house for a day
>>
OP, I want to see YOU making tons of AMPS fit in a really small container while making it also SAFE and not catching fire when you sit on it.

There are lots of new technologies for batteries but it is hard as fuck to make them retardproof/safe for normal daily use
>>
>>47780993
There have been huge advancements in battery technology. Just look at what Panasonic and Tesla have done in the past 3 years alone. 18650 lithium cells will go from 3300mah to 4000mah in ONE year. That is fucking insane.

Not to mention new chemistries for ebikes and other vehicles like LiFePO4 and LiCo.

Hell, even NiMH technology has gotten so good in the last decade that alkalines are basically irrelevant. You can get 2650mah AA rechargeables versus 1800mah traditional alkalines.
>>
>>47781177
Apple's tiering stuff they were doing for their new bullshit laptop was admittedly pretty neat.
>>
>>47781204
But no more efficient that smal board and all the batteries it layered to power it still dont last a day
>>
>>47781222
Yeah, hence the bullshit part of the new laptop. It is still pretty neat. Stirling motors are neat, and nearly totally useless.
>>
>>47781222
The macbook is about design. They built the laptop of the future, spent an insane amount of time engineering as much battery into it as possible and have a drop in SoC. They can literally reuse the design for the next 8 years by just dropping in skylake, cherrylake, etc. Wireless charging, ddr4, etc will all be built into the SoC.
>>
>>47780993
Rayovac batteries are my new favorite. Cheap as dirt, long-lasting, and look great.

I love Duracell but fuck their prices.
>>
>>47780993
Head of tesla R&D thinks battery capacities (energy/mm^2) will double every 10 years. We've seen that same growth over the last 3 decades. That's pretty impressive when you think about the physical limitations of storing electricity.

Alkaline is dead tech mate. It has been for 5 years now and it's only gotten worse.
>>
>>47781331
But the thing is that they a small charging bank making them useless after a couple of hours. Things like controllers would easily drain some cheap Alkaline

Nokia 3310 had a 900mah battery in 2000
Nowadays, batteries about twice the size have around 2500mah, batteries are the bottleneck of the tech world.
>>
>>47781039
Do you have any concept of scale? Do you really think biking for 10 minutes at like 2W is the same as 18 hours of you running your 1000W computer, X lights at 60W, and washer dryer fridge water heater. You might convince me on like charging your phone....
>>
>>47781391
Why not? This is why people are poor, they can't understand the long-term savings of a slightly larger initial investment.
>>
>>47781372
>It has been for 5 years now and it's only gotten worse

For 5 years? It's been dead since the 90s with the first consumer ready rechargeables
>>
>>47781429
But those weren't LSD so alkalines still had a place in lightly-used devices. And capacity was pretty damn low (like 1500mah for a nimh) and they had a low cycle life (~200) and had to be babbied as far as charging rate.

But now, there's no comparison.

That's because manufacturers use the cheapest batteries that won't explode and burn your face off

If you loaded up a computer with state-of-the art batteries like the Panasonic LiCo's, you could easily get 2x the battery life.

>>

It's not a shit battery though, unless you have links. I' not talking about battery life, btw I'm talking battery tech. When they drop in DDR4 in cherrylake that machine will easily get 15 hours. Plus wireless charging on skylake means that 'plugging it in' won't be hard at all.
>>
I made the switch from alkaline to the Eneloop master race last year and it's been wonderful. They're not even expensive. Just a few recharges and it's all savings from there. Aside from rechargeability, they have the advantages of not leaking and having a much more stable voltage. My incandescent flashlights perform significantly better with Eneloops versus those "1.5 volt" alkalines which sag to half that before they're drained.

A $5 30-pack will last me over a year these days, since most devices are rechargeable. I only use them in TV remote controls, an Xbox 360 controller I barely use, and my wireless mouse which lasts six months on one AA.

Most normal people probably use even less.

No. NiMH and chargers have become much better. See for example Eneloop or Turnigy batteries. The difference is huge even within AA / AAA cells.

Also, countless Lithium and other batteries got developed, with more probably coming.

If Eneloops are too expensive you can also get Turnigy, Amazon Basics or even Ikea Ladda or GP Recyko.

Yea, the last two are a bit less good, but really cheap. [Turnigy are technically equally cheap and basically as good as regular 3rd gen eneloops, but you will have to pay shipping costs... and Amazon basics are like 2nd gen Eneloops, somewhere in between in terms of price.]

Nothing really.

Good LED have better color reproduction (note, this is not in *every* LED flashlight - there are many color bins, but if you pick the right ones - or have them picked for you, like when you buy a photographic flashligh - you get better colors).

You can also get a lot more light output per Watt, obviously.

PS: If you have a LED flashlight anyways, you might as well use li-ion 18650's or 14500's or so.

They're better than NiMh in almost all regards except in the specific case of sub-zero (Celsius scale) temperature use.

Right. I'd say cars. Even though electric cars are emerging, it's still a long way until everyone drives one.
Tires can still run flat, petrol engines are extremely inefficient, traffic jams etc.
>>
>>47784338
Engines are inefficient but gasoline is a hell of a lot more energy dense than any battery is. Batteries are the thing keeping electric cars from taking off.

Also car chargers will probably become a real annoyance in the future since I'm sure each car is going to have its own charger. Hopefully the EU or the US will put their foot down and require all cars to use the same charger
>>
>want to replace all alkalines with li-ion batteries

10 minutes biking flat out at 200W would get you 10/60ths of 200Wh, so 33Wh. So running a desktop for, well, until you stop peddling, or a laptop for, say, 3 hours. It'd fully charge a phone though.
Everyone seems to think the problem is getting the infinite power out of the smallest fucking generator and getting it into the infinity shit, slow batteries.
That simply isn't the case. A battery will take basically all the power you throw at it, within reason.
The only problem we have is battery density. We can store 10KWh in something the size of a go-cart, yes, but not in something that fits in your pocket.

Battery tech is making great strides.
Not exactly bleeding edge, but I swapped the stock battery out of my bike. A newish lithium one is 6lbs lighter, the estart works faster, and it'll hold a charge longer. In a few years I might be replacing it with something that only weighs half a pound.
