Any sysadmins here that make around 6 figures?

What did you wear to your interview?

I was thinking slacks, dress shirt and tie to step it up one from their business casual normal attire.

A suit is overkill right?
>>
I wear a suit to any interview for a white-collar job regardless of the dress code. What's the downside to wearing a suit anyway? If its because you don't have one, wear a dress shirt and tie, bit I'm guessing you probably do have one if you're job hunting.
>>
plaid shirt, thick-rimmed black glasses, skinny jeans, and some velcro shoes
>>
Nothing but a tube sock, and not on my feet.
>>
>>47759865
Wear a suit. OP, how old are you?
>>
>>47759903
I wore a suit to every interview except for one they made clear the interview was to be conducted in jeans and a polo

If the customer conveys a specific dress code then go for it. Otherwise oversressing beats underdressing.
>>
>>47759865
>a suit is overkill

What the fuuuuuuuuuck?
>>
i WORE A DEFCON T-SHIRT A MOHAWK AND THE TIGHTEST JEANS WITH AN ERECTION
>>

>I was thinking slacks, dress shirt and tie to step it up one from their business casual normal attire.
sounds good.
>>
>>47759865
A) wear a fucking suit
b) wearing a tie with no jacket (suit jacket, blazer) makes you look stupid
>>
i don't own a suit jacket so i usually just wear everything but that.
>>
>>47759923
This.

Unless you're applying to McDonalds or something, there will never be a time that an interviewer will think negatively of you for overdressing when there's no dress code stated before hand. Thus, always wear a suit.
>>
>>47759865
Not "sys admin" but devops in the coastal areas clear north of 6 figures with 3-5+ years experience.

Need to have a solid understanding of testing, QA, development, newest libs for automation, all the way down to the networking stack (how do i route packets from one vlan to another- super basic, or how do change BGP advertisements etc).

Basically gotta be good at a lot of shit, especially linux and understanding the kernel- most devops jobs surround around linux deeply.

Just wear some handsome.

Literally any job you want.
>>

This because..
>>47759958
..a shirt and tie without a jacket is the wedding uniform of a toddler.
>>
>>47759865
Shirt, tie and sweater-vest, with a horrible pair of cargo pants worked for me.

Then again the interview was conducted with the person who later turned out to be the boss and not HR-dipshits and I didn't get a single "Where do you see yourself in five years?" or any other standard HR-questions
>>
>>47759999
>a shirt and tie without a jacket is the wedding uniform of a toddler.
well it got me a job working in an osteoengineering lab so i guess it doesn't matter much.
>>
>>47760016
Probably because the interviewer looked past it and examined your skills. In general, you shouldn't be taking that chance.
>>
You must be a retard to wear anything other than a button up shirt and some jeans unless you're interviewing at the NSA. Thats what they wear at fucking facebook and google.
>>
>>47760033
>In general, you shouldn't be taking that chance.
yeah i agree but when i was looking for jobs and interviewing i didn't have the money to buy a suit jacket. not much i could have done about it.
>>
Condom and cowboy hat
>>
>>47760050
Oh that's completely fair, the main thing I think is important is to not wear a tie if you don't have a jacket. I wouldn't judge someone without a jacket unless they were applying for a higher-level position.
>>
OP here,

I have a suit but the hiring manager said the dress code of the company is slacks and a polo or dress shirt, with casual fridays like jeans and a polo. He said he always dresses down on fridays.

He didn't say anything about the interview though.

I'm afraid they may view me as an outsider if i wear CIO clothes.

Once I wore a tie to work where I did network security and my jimmies got rustled by the VP.

Also my last startup job, everyone wore tshirts and poked at me for dressing in business casual.

In the last 3 jobs Ive had, the company culture looked down upon overdressing.

This place is an established multinational media company (think universal) but a spinoff section of it that avails of their huge budget, but is a bit roguelike perhaps.
>>
>>47760050
If the question was "what should you wear to your first job interview when you have no money" then that'd be relevant. However OP is asking about interviewing for a job that's going to pay 6 figures out of the gate. He should show at least a little bit of class.
>>
>>47760079

OP here,

I interviewed for city IT manager and the city manager told me, at the end if the interview, that everything went well but he was not going to hire me because I didn't wear a tie.

I had slacks, dress shoes, and a ligjtgreen dressshirt on.
>>
>>47760098
>he was not going to hire me because I didn't wear a tie
Hard to believe these people still exist.
>>
>>47760084

Interviews are different from every-day work dress code. It's never a bad idea to dress up for the interview or even the first week or two, then dress down to the environment.

Plus, you look sharp as fuck while rockin' a suit. Get some girls on you while you're out there.
>>
>>47760098
And you're asking if you should dress up after that? Yeah, it's shitty. But are you morally against dressing up for an interview or something? I don't see what the big deal is. You already said you have a suit.
>>
>>47760079
>the main thing I think is important is to not wear a tie if you don't have a jacket.

no, you can wear whatever combo you want. The main thing is to not be out of shape / obese and hide it in some expensive clothes
>>
Any neets here make 6 figures?
>>
i always wear my god of war shirt with my assassin's creed jacket for interviews, it increases my nerd points a lot, what surely is a plus for this kind of job
>>
>>47760132
Didn't think so
>>
>>47760116

I need to explain more. This is the third interview, and the first face-to-face one, so I don't want to look like some weirdo who never worked in IT before who comes in wearing a suit to a place where the purpose is to see if I "fit the culture" according to HR.

It's going to consist of 30 or so minutes with the hiring manager (I already talked to him for over an hour on phone), meeting the rest of the team, taking a tour of the place, and meeting the VP if he is in.

Yes, I recognize that the VP might like to see the suit, but I don't think the hiring manager is going to wear a suit and I'm not sure if I should dress over him.

Also I'm fairly certain from my experience in IT, that most IT people don't come in wearing suits and if they do, they will be sneered at by the staff.

You fucking idiot
>>
>>47760154
In this case, I would say a suit would be a bad idea. A well tailored jacket and slacks, potentially without a tie, would look better. It really doesn't matter though, the quality of the clothes and the fit will matter the most in this situation.
>>
>>47760154
That definitely changes things. In my opinion, I'd say dress shirt, tie, and a sweater, and some nice pants.

If your jimmies got rustled cause you wore a tie, you lack confidence to pull it off. Man the fuck up.
>>
>>47760189
I mean, does this look bad?
>>
>>47760211
Actually thats how you get looked down upon even more and fired. You have to always agree with your higher ups, except when they do something really illegal
>>
>>47760220
no but no one here looks like that
>>
>>47760229

No, this is the time where you get your job security.
>>
>>47760211

Nah, they didn't really get rustled. I told the VP that I was bringing the dress code up. He said I was making everyone else look bad. Just a joke, but every joke has a little bit of truth, eh?
>>
>>47760233
the outfit looks good on him, but on your average /g/ user they would look like shit
>>
>>47760245
Well that sounds like a personal problem.
>>
Not the tech industry, but when I was interviewed for my job they told me not to wear a suit. I just wore everything I would have with a suit except the suit jacket. EZPZ.
>>
>>47759865

No, wear a fucking suit you god damned plebeian. And make sure it fits properly.
>>
>>47760234
I do
>>
>>47760220
Shit fit. Would not wear.
>>
>>47760253

Might be a decent response if this entire thread wasn't about what a single person should wear.

>>47760258
>And make sure it fits properly.

Fucking this, fit is the difference between looking like an 18 year old wearing his dad's clothes and an employable adult.
>>
>>47760253
Don't listen to them, you don't have to be a model to pull of what model is wearing. That's literally just a dress shirt/tie with a sweater over it. As long as you're not wearing your fucking Christmas sweater It'll be fine.
>>
>>47760277
Because I'm supposed to know what OP looks like?

>>47760282
Thanks, and I know. I wear that all the time.

>>

I'm guessing you're not on the west coast? Over here, wearing a suit to an interview will fail you since you won't be seen to fit into the culture.

OP Here,

This is the closest to what I have to wear:

A Slim fit blue shirt with dobby stripes that are just a tad darker than the fabric.

Black or gray pants.

Black shoes.

Maybe a multicolored blue tie with diagonal stripes.

Im not a fat ass. I'm 6'2, 220, about 13% bodyfat.

Hey OP, Oregon Sysadmin here, $121,000 a year. I feel like I really lucked out in my position, I started as an intern at Intel making $15 per hour, got an interview with my company (sorry will not disclose my companies name) for $25. Now making 121,000 a year.

To my interview, I wore khaki's and a striped white shirt/black striped tie (pretty much my daily attire.) Dress does not impress as much as knowledge/intelligence, so make sure you're a genius like me before your interviews.
