Facebook wasn't just about marketing. Everyone that dismisses successes purely as smoke and mirrors is a coward, unwilling to give credit where it's due.
I'm not saying Facebook is technically impressive. Or it certainly wasn't in its nascent days, and not for years after it was created (maybe you can argue that today it represents a feat of engineering at scale).
But Facebook made a community that people wanted to join. Call that dumb luck if you want, and maybe it is, but don't project your own ignorance of how community-building works onto the world; there's actually knowledge about how to do it, and Facebook and other sites that exploded in user base used that knowledge. Whether it was knowingly or not may be debatable, but designing the system in the right way at the outset - and evolving it appropriately to grow with its users - was crucial.
Pro @ WoW with my retribution paladin. Achieved Marshall status and then participated in the opening of the gates of AQ, on one of the most popular realm in Europe. Shit was cash, the best years of my life.

It's not just smoke and mirrors, large part of it is pure luck. There is nothing remarkable about Facebook, nor about the majority of IT giants. It's just luck and dirty practices, with very little innovation acting as a forefront to all the crap.
>>47746002
I didn't say anything about marketing. It's just that CEOs of successful companies are often ruthless people who always focus on pursuing and promoting their own goals. Many times borderline sociopaths. I'm not a person like that.
>>47746040

Why have you wasted 10,000 precious .hours of your youth playing a stupid videogame? With 10,000 hours you can become a great pro in watever discipline. Parents should force their teenage soons not to waste ridiculous ammounts of time in videogames. All my friends are like this, the are also very inteligent, but wasted a lot of precoius time killing some virtual dolls in the screen, instead of doing something worthwhile.
