neku was experimenting with RAID on a new server at home but accidentally used a wrong command on the wrong server. He was supposed to rebuild the RAID at his home, not at Pomf.se.

No backups available. 120 EUR+ per month for server upkeep costs, that leaves a student already in debt with no money to purchase a 4 TB drive.

That server at his home was supposed to help with his financial situation since I offered to host it, but we can only hope to be able to restore the data.
>>

>>
>>47737387
$480 was acquired in donations last month for the new server, and that was only with begging for it. Regularly Pomf received some $10 per month from Flattr and maybe up to $50 per month from bank transfers in donations irregularly. Still not enough to cover the hosting costs.

>>47737389
I am supposed to start paying 160 EUR/month indefinitely for his 200 Mbps unmetered 1U colocation at Portlane, but let's see if neku can even recover the array first.

>>47737528

>>47737537
It was actually discussed that whole Pomf.se database and all files would be dumped to Internet Archive [1] after the colocation on 2015-06-03, which is about 5 weeks away from now.

Well, if that's not completely fucked, then.

lel.
>>
>>47737614
Yeah but it clearly isn't working.
Trying to please a bunch of autistic neckbeards with a free service is hard.
>>
>>47737616
I never used the site, was just making a suggestion since I doubt anyone will care enough to donate.
>>
>>47737636
Which is why I promised to host Pomf.se at Portlane. Why? Because Pomf.se has a political goal and I'm also an archivist.

I've also discussed that people may have more incentive to donate to a nonprofit organization that hosts Pomf.se instead of a private person running a filesharing website from Sweden.
>>
>>47737581
Pomf was mostly used by 4channers and tech literate people. They all run ad blockers. And we would just complain and use another host without ads. Donations were pretty much his only option.
>>
>>47737651
Everyone who utilize pomf service either does not even access the webpage via browser or block ad domains
>>
>>47737681
What's its political goal?
>>
As long as it comes back up, who gives a shit
pomf was always used for temporary file sharing, for everything else people use mega or mediafire
>>
>>47737651
>since I doubt anyone will care enough to donate.

>tfw I've made more money in my life trough one mod made for Oblivion with a donation than my actual job.
>I've probably made 200 times more than I've made in my job trough commissions
Donating is good, pomf.se is just kind of niche so the amount of donations it receives is smaller.
>>
>>47737697
There's some controversial content that could get easily censored somewhere else. Things like .torrent files for The Fappening that received DMCA notices for takedown, which were declined.

I believe the right to publish even controversial material and opinions is the right to freedom of expression.
>>
>>47737738
pomf hosted .torrent files? i've only ever seen it used for pics.
>>
>>47737728
All I've heard from the Steam Mods debacle is that mods don't pay well through donating. You're the first modder to say something like this. Maybe it was different back in the day with Oblivion?
>>
>>47737763
You can upload a file with any extension, even .exe files. You get a direct download link for it.
>>
Money and internet functioning being dependent upon it is the problem.
The goal is to shift away from this paradigm and make something else work.
Everything should be free and freedom for everyone.
I will never donate money to any cause, charity, or project regardless of how commendable or awesome.
Pomf devs are the best kind of people - They're not going anywhere.

The Fappening contained CP. It's cute to be an activist when either there's nothing on the line because no one cares about the laws or you're doing something western civilization generally agrees with, like disliking your country's politics, but actually dealing with the real threats that people do care about going after like CP/terrorism is tough, even if the person believes in "freedom of expression" through trading other people's hacked nudes and piracy of games/movies or whatever. The problem with hosting The Fappening is that you're going to open yourself up to real problems instead of the easymode ones everyone could stand for.

Oh, actually, I misread your original post as "activist" instead of "archivist". In any case, you're still going to open yourself up to these same threats regardless of what your intent is. Wouldn't recommend it.

Do NOT use Volafile. It has turned into a shithole recently after its owner neglected it then decided to turn it into his personal play thing. The best users and mod have left and now we're just waiting until the owner decides he doesn't want to pay X euros a month to host a troll server.

You're still going to need hardware. That's not free.
Do you want to host it on your computer? Okay then, but you'll still need electricity, manual management and a reliable, high speed internet connection that can handle many more coming in and downloading things.
Do you want to be your own ISP? You're going to have to manually get a shovel and get to work because that's gonna take a while.
Do you want to connect through someone else's network to truly be a part of the internet? That's going to cost money too unless you plan to build brand new infrastructure everywhere yourself by hand. And then you're going to have to fly around to Africa occasionally to fix it.
Do you want to be your own energy company powering all that? I'm not even sure how you'd do that. I hope you've read some free books on it.
If hardware is too much to pay for then go out into the forest right now with a stick and a rock and construct a high end central processing unit. Maybe the owls will be able to help.

I mean, maybe you have a point about domains being strictly controlled, but they only cost a few dollars and then that's it. The other 99% of the money goes into things that are totally legitimate and you would be forced to pay for anyway one way or another. Usually with a reduced cost and an awful lot more labor+expertise.

Quite easily if you've got a whole bunch of shells open. Take it from someone who attempted to spoof a workstation IP by using ifconfig to grab it's MAC, and forgot that he was actually logged in to the server at the time. Cue all sorts of weird behaviour and some pissed off sysadmins.
>>
>>47738368
Did you try loading it again? Probably had to cache the first time.
>>
>>47738330
First of all, as long as you own the hardware any outsider needs a search warrant to even touch the hardware without permission. This also applies to your bedroom, it's only as safe as your own door lock is.

Most motherboards with IPMI can be set to alert on physical intrusion, which can instruct the machine to do something like power down.

I don't see how someone's own house is any more physically private than a datacenter, in fact quite the opposite. Especially if you're not a neckbeard on /g/ without a social life.

The point was that 99% of the money goes into things that are actually valuable and can't be done half as well, if at all, by individuals.

He can also send you messages/files "signed" with the key, and you can verify that they haven't been tampered with in transit, and stuff. Go ahead and take a look at it. I wouldn't rely too heavily on keybase.io's in-browser encryption, though. It's better to run a real GPG program on your desktop instead.

Easiest integration into encrypted email is probably using Enigmail.[1]

I mostly use the cli version of GPG (which should already be installed), and occasionally Enigmail (which lets you do most of the operations using a GUI inside Thunderbird). I think a common stand-alone GUI is Seahorse.
