I installed crunchbang on an old netbook and disabled sleep mode so I could use it as a hentai@home server.
It works pretty well.
I'd like to get some samba shares going, but the documentation and tutorials are so obtuse that I'm having a hard time getting off the ground.
Nothing, I was thinking of buying an old corporate rack and turn it into a NAS with a couple of virtual servers though
Got a dell poweredge r710 with centos that I use to virtualize some stuff, mostly for fun/testing and school projects.
And a custom built machine with centos running owncloud and working like a sort of a media center since it's connected to the tv.

Well, I use my Linux desktop for various server-y tasks, (NFS, KVM, SSH) but most of my actual server stuff lives on a colocated 1U server. My laptop exists primarily as a remote terminal for either my desktop or my rack server, so I don't really need to serve much at home.
Now my home router, that's interesting.

I have an old laptop along with an external hard drive running Xubuntu, didn't bother changing the distro for the server. Started over the weekend, so far I have:

- mix tape, image board, etc on website

Samba is somewhat weird to configure, especially if it needs some non-default configuration. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Also what distro are you running?

I actually have a question: can I run a minecraft server on it for my little brother? If do, how many people will it support? Hardware upgrades are out of the question; it's a tiny nettop.
Used to be a nas, then a matlab/fortran thing, then used to code from anywhere while using a laptop as terminal.
Now it's just running windows and being a gaymen pc, the x61 is collecting dust or occasionally browsing forchins in bed.
I think I'm gonna make it a media and web server since I gotta host a site for my parents.

Yeah, Samba's a bit funky.
Depending on your clients and how you want to share files, you could try something else.
NFS is great if your network is mainly Linux machines. But don't expect much security. Or you could give a shot at SFTP. If you set up file permissions correctly you could even share files between users easily.

Somewhat similar to what I have. The best way for that to work is to have the hdd's mount during boot. You'll have to add them to the fstab file.

Read the part systemwide mounts, it explains how to do this.
Next, now that those drives automount, you should set the user permissions for accessing the drives. The drives will probably reside in the /media directory. Use the chown and chmod on the drives to give yourself appropriate read/write access.
Next, install the samba server, which you probably already have.
Next, consider installing system-config-samba, a gui tool for setting up the shares. Launch it using sudo in the terminal, as it requires root access. For basic setups, this tool should be enough.
Use the tool to add a samba user (preferences>samba users), and set the unix username to your own, rest is up to you. After that, just add your shares. Make sure to check the visible option or they won't show in windows.
Now just restart the samba server for changes to take effect. That should be it.

I just upgraded my pfsense box from a 10/100 NIC to a dual gigabit server NIC.
Now I have 3x gigabit and 1x 100mbit. Got a DMZ now, feels good man. I'm gonna put my wifi on my DMZ so I can insulate my fileserver from wifi.

Home I have a raspi with 1TB ext storage, it's running transmission, smb and a media server so I can browse to it via the PS3.
Locked down using iptables to my local network and remote access to it from my work on port 22, the transmission web interface from anywhere though.
Dunno if it counts but I got a couple of VPS' to handle my email, website and any wee projects I can be bothered doing. The first VPS is purely for filtering email inbound and outbound, so it relays it on to the second one once it's scanned and tagged it. Same in reverse.

Well, between friends we have set up a multi-site VPN.
We're currently working on setting up common e-mail and WLAN login on all locations.
Eventually it's about 5 sites and 15 users in total.

Yeah, changing the port doesn't do shit really - it's decent practice but it's no more secure from someone that really wants access. Locking it down properly is the only way. I keep the key files for the VPS' on a flash drive inside an encrypted file container - with a back up on the keyfiles on a separate flash drive in a safe, in a different encrypted file container.

I help manage a huge multi-tenant ESXi cluster at work, which is WHY I hate it so much. OpenStack is very nearly at feature parity with ESXi these days, and a lot less of a headache to diagnose when something goes wrong. As for running wireshark on the nat router, you do know you can run that on a headless Linux or BSD box and use ssh -Y to run it remotely, right? It's one of the best uses for remote X.

I run a forum with yearly visitor counts of between 3,000,000 and 5,500,000
Runs on an Atom 330 with 4GB DDR3 and a 120GB SSD, passively cooled except for the PSU which I haven't gotten around to buy a fanless one so I just use the temperature controlled PSU fan as the sole exhaust fan for the system.
The PSU fan is all the way down most of the time and even when running full tilt you can't hear it from more than a few inches away.
You won't even know that it's on if it wasn't for the occasional activity led light and the tiny power led.

Running a FreeNAS setup. It has all my movies/tv/music on it and i just stream from there to whatever device im using. It also has sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickrage, and headphones all DLing shit automatically and moving/renaming the data to the appropriate drive. Also plex. I'm thinking of either setting up nginx or apache and getting a webserver up and running on it.

I'm not saying they aren't power hogs,but depending on how it's setup it would probably draw between 100-200W at idle.
For example I have an IBM X3950 M2 with dual 1.4kW supplies,all the DIMMS populated(32x2),and all 4 sockets populated(E7330). It uses 340W at near idle with about 6 VMs running.
When things get going it starts to go up a bit to around 400,but I've never honestly maxed the thing out.
And I have thought about upgrading it to something much newer,but I can't justify the price,because this thing already does everything I need it to. Honestly it just needs more local storage,only complaint.
Now mind you,this all seems sane to me because I have a bunch of cheap power sources near me and power only costs around 7 cents per kwh. If you live in someplace like commiefornia where people have told me their power costs like,fucking 28 cents or more...then maybe the draw is a bit high.

I run a MiniITX AMD 5150 APU Windows system for Media sharing, streaming, torrents, etc.
For SSH tunneling and private secure data-flow for personal use, I have a ThinkPad G40 that runs Debian. I love the battery backup that a laptop provides. For what it does, it works flawlessly.

I agree I'm still using all my old hardware for temporary emergency. My first PC holds my weekly backups but I shut it down once they are done. The drives are 10 years old and the motherboard needs to a power drain to boot. I use my old Thinkpad for the few times I go out of the city I really don't need a good laptop for that. I still wouldn't rely on any of them for 24/7 services but that's just me.

I just bought an XServ.
I wanted one apple product. Just one. Just so I could learn OSX.
And I realized... I do servers. If I bought an iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook.... it just wouldn't feel right. I do servers. So... I bought an apple server.
Also feels kinda like a collector's item, since apple don't make em anymore.

Dont get too impress, all that stuff is over 10+ years old. The 6300 in the bottom is dated from October 1998. The SC1425 are stamped back in 2004. Got all of it used from University datacenter when the sold out old stuff to make room for brand new top of the line 24 cores machines.
Nice Rig ! I run a Dell Latitude E as my workstation. 8 gig of ram, quad core nothing impressive. Plugged on a docking station to have comfort of a desktop.
