I installed crunchbang on an old netbook and disabled sleep mode so I could use it as a hentai@home server.

It works pretty well.
I'd like to get some samba shares going, but the documentation and tutorials are so obtuse that I'm having a hard time getting off the ground.

Well, I use my Linux desktop for various server-y tasks, (NFS, KVM, SSH) but most of my actual server stuff lives on a colocated 1U server. My laptop exists primarily as a remote terminal for either my desktop or my rack server, so I don't really need to serve much at home.

Now my home router, that's interesting.

I have an old laptop along with an external hard drive running Xubuntu, didn't bother changing the distro for the server. Started over the weekend, so far I have:

- website hosted on it (http://ayylmao.space)
- mix tape, image board, etc on website
- ownCloud server
- FTP server
- working on email

Its pretty cool I guess.

Samba is somewhat weird to configure, especially if it needs some non-default configuration. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Also what distro are you running?

Used to be a nas, then a matlab/fortran thing, then used to code from anywhere while using a laptop as terminal.

>>
>>47717504
Yeah, Samba's a bit funky.

Depending on your clients and how you want to share files, you could try something else.

NFS is great if your network is mainly Linux machines. But don't expect much security. Or you could give a shot at SFTP. If you set up file permissions correctly you could even share files between users easily.

>>
>>47717504
Somewhat similar to what I have. The best way for that to work is to have the hdd's mount during boot. You'll have to add them to the fstab file.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions
Read the part systemwide mounts, it explains how to do this.
Next, now that those drives automount, you should set the user permissions for accessing the drives. The drives will probably reside in the /media directory. Use the chown and chmod on the drives to give yourself appropriate read/write access.
Next, install the samba server, which you probably already have.
Next, consider installing system-config-samba, a gui tool for setting up the shares. Launch it using sudo in the terminal, as it requires root access. For basic setups, this tool should be enough.
Use the tool to add a samba user (preferences>samba users), and set the unix username to your own, rest is up to you. After that, just add your shares. Make sure to check the visible option or they won't show in windows.
Now just restart the samba server for changes to take effect. That should be it.

Home I have a raspi with 1TB ext storage, it's running transmission, smb and a media server so I can browse to it via the PS3.
Locked down using iptables to my local network and remote access to it from my work on port 22, the transmission web interface from anywhere though.

Dunno if it counts but I got a couple of VPS' to handle my email, website and any wee projects I can be bothered doing. The first VPS is purely for filtering email inbound and outbound, so it relays it on to the second one once it's scanned and tagged it. Same in reverse.
>>
>>47718978
Change the SSH port to something different than 22, to increase security.
>>
>>47718993
It's open up to the public IP I sit on at work, nothing else. But I mean, I guess someone using my workstation at work could get on to it, but that's about it. I should change it anyway, it's good practice. Thanks anon.
>>
>>47718993
Or just install Fail2ban and set up SSH key auth.
>>
>>47718993
that's not really a viable solution. Port 22 is fine, but make sure that you're using pka-auth only and disable password logins.

if you do change the SSH port, make sure you change it to somethung below port 1024.
>>
>>47718847

>>47718818
Well, between friends we have set up a multi-site VPN.
We're currently working on setting up common e-mail and WLAN login on all locations.
Eventually it's about 5 sites and 15 users in total.
It's a fun project.
>>
>>47719032
The two VPS' I use I set up the key file authentication, disabled the ability to use the password. For the home raspi I don't need to care so much because like I said - it ignores anything from any IP that isn't local to it or my work IP. (both IPtables and on the router).
>>
>>47719079
That's good. It really grinds me gears when people say stuff like "change your ssh port for more security."

security through obscurity is not the correct way, and many people change their SSH port to 2222.

Well, anyone can bind a malicious server to port 2222, which actually decreases your security.

>>
>>47719102
Yeah, changing the port doesn't do shit really - it's decent practice but it's no more secure from someone that really wants access. Locking it down properly is the only way. I keep the key files for the VPS' on a flash drive inside an encrypted file container - with a back up on the keyfiles on a separate flash drive in a safe, in a different encrypted file container.

I help manage a huge multi-tenant ESXi cluster at work, which is WHY I hate it so much. OpenStack is very nearly at feature parity with ESXi these days, and a lot less of a headache to diagnose when something goes wrong. As for running wireshark on the nat router, you do know you can run that on a headless Linux or BSD box and use ssh -Y to run it remotely, right? It's one of the best uses for remote X.

Given the increase in total cfm probably. But not having it right on the heat sink might cause heat spikes Dont know. Very curious.

Well, was the fan stuck directly on the heatsink ? If it was then the heat might not be removed fast enough and the cpu might get too hot. No fire hazard but you want to watch the cpu temps very closely with something like cpuz or cputemp
>>
>>47721386
It was right on it, yes; it runs pretty hot usually.

Running a FreeNAS setup. It has all my movies/tv/music on it and i just stream from there to whatever device im using. It also has sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickrage, and headphones all DLing shit automatically and moving/renaming the data to the appropriate drive. Also plex. I'm thinking of either setting up nginx or apache and getting a webserver up and running on it.
>>
>>47721583

I have a seperate jail for all my plugins. That way I dont have to fiddle around with permissions between jails and shit, it just makes setup so much easier
>>

I thought they all used the same DSM, so the home 2-bays should still be able to create LUNs and attach iSCSI to a VM host, at least in theory.
>>
>>47717165
Mate don't do that, laptops aren't good for server because they will burn if left for a lot of days.
Especially netbooks
>>
I want a NAS for anime, movies and manga/doujins but I need FDE since there's a lot of break-ins here. Ideally I'd like filenames and metadata to be encrypted too. I'm a bit worried that a commercial prebuilt would index my encrypted files with their dumb gallery and search features. Would NAS4Free or FreeNAS be good for that?

I thought about that, but then wouldn't it be a headache to detect a faulty drive? rebuild arrays or extend them? dm-crypt is already complicated it seems like a pain to manage in a raid environment. Hell OpenBSD and FreeBSD encryption looks way more simpler to me on first look.
>>
>>47721678
are you dense ?

if they are plugged in and with nothing blocking air flow near them they are golden for servers for non intensive crap. Like an Apache server, torrent/seed box, etc.
>>
>>47721787
>I thought about that, but then wouldn't it be a headache to detect a faulty drive?
No, all you have to do is run "cat /proc/mdstat" every now and then to get a report.
>rebuild arrays or extend them?
No, it's piss easy.
>dm-crypt is already complicated it seems like a pain to manage in a raid environment.
Stop reading guides from 2005 you fucking moron. Use LUKS, LVM, and mdadm for encrypted softraid.
>>
>>47721821
Most consumer laptops have crappy airflow and bad built quality. I wouldn't even run a local nginx on them. A thinkpad or other proper business laptop sure why not.

>>47721837
I see. I have limited experience with mdadm and all LUKS guides I could find have a single drive root FDE setup. I always thought mixing raid with encryption would be too much trouble. Doesn't help that I don't know shit about LVM. I guess I'll learn more about it then thanks for the info.

Is that an actual tested and confirmed draw,or is it just the PSU rating?

I'm not saying they aren't power hogs, but depending on how it's setup it would probably draw between 100-200W at idle.

For example I have an IBM X3950 M2 with dual 1.4kW supplies, all the DIMMS populated(32x2),and all 4 sockets populated(E7330). It uses 340W at near idle with about 6 VMs running.

When things get going it starts to go up a bit to around 400,but I've never honestly maxed the thing out.

And I have thought about upgrading it to something much newer, but I can't justify the price, because this thing already does everything I need it to. Honestly it just needs more local storage, only complaint.

Now mind you, this all seems sane to me because I have a bunch of cheap power sources near me and power only costs around 7 cents per kwh. If you live in someplace like commiefornia where people have told me their power costs like, fucking 28 cents or more...then maybe the draw is a bit high.

yeah, I mean why not use the hardware you have on your shelf collecting dust to learn new stuff.

Not reusing hardware like that is almost as stupid as trying to use crap hardware for actual serious task and relying on that. Still there are people cutting corners at work when putting servers to work.
>>
Thinking of trying out Xen and then running a bunch of shit from that. How well will it run on a G3258 and 8 gigs with mabye 3-4 VMs running at a time?

I just bought an XServ.

I wanted one apple product. Just one. Just so I could learn OSX.

And I realized... I do servers. If I bought an iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook.... it just wouldn't feel right. I do servers. So... I bought an apple server.

Also feels kinda like a collector's item, since apple don't make em anymore.

The rest of my collection consist of:

HP Z800 Workstation---------------||| Fedora 21

HP ProLiant DL380 G5 Server---||| Windows Server 2008 Standard R2

Dell PowerEdge 2950 Server-----||| CentOS 7

Lenovo ThinkServer RS110--------||| OpenBSD

And now this new Apple XServ (when it gets here) with OSX Server (some kitty-cat)

And that is the extent of my computer collection.
One day imma get a super-awesome server from System76, probably leave the default Ubuntu on it, or maybe put SmartOS on it or something... and I also hope to one day buy a laptop from System76... or maybe one of those oldschool convertible thinkpad laptops that's a laptop and tablet combined, with the screen you can swivel around

Where did my minimalism go? I feel like a computer hoarder.... AGAIN!
