You'll be needing when ur done installing all the dumb applications u have
>>
No, I think it's a good idea to get it cheap because the market fluctuates a lot
>>
Why?
It's your own money (I assume).

I've been good with my 8GB in my build from mid-2012, and I doubt any more would make a difference.

Save some on the RAM, get a bigger SSD (unless you're already getting a 512GB).

What does the rest of your build look like?
>>
>>47703391
290x
4690-k
256gb ssd
1tb hdd
3tb hdd
8gb ram
>>
>>47703361
im buying 32gb and might be streaming and video editing.
>>
>>47703433
So.. if you already have 8GB RAM and a pretty solid build.

Why 16GB RAM?
>>
>>47703361
I'm gonna buy 16GB myself

>>
>>47703459
Get 64GB RAM, then.

Get a dual-Xeon build and some Quadro graphics cards while you're at it.
>>
I previously ran into problems with low memory with my rampant multitasking and tabwhoring, so I got 16 and don't have to worry about it anymore.
>>
>>47703470
The three sticks in the front a different.
The two in the back seems to be a matching pair.

Maybe he just pulled them all out from a drawer with old shit parts.

They can still be overclocked.

>>

LGA 1366 used triple channel, mostly for the wow factor, and then switched to quad channel for lga 2011
>>
>>47704095
The correct answer would be:
8x 4GB sticks

in 2x 3+1 arrays
>>
>>47703361
I have 24GB RAM and don't do video editing either
>>
>>47703361
I have 32 gigs, but then I often run VMs or do shit with huge files I can't be arsed to write on comparatively slow SSDs.
>>
>>47703361
Why not? It's only $50 more than getting 8 gigs. I just picked up a 240 gig ssd and 16 gigs of ddr3 1600 for $180. More ram is always better in my experience. The only question is if the cost prevents you from getting something else better. 16 gigs is cheap enough that there isn't much reason not to do it
>>
I have 32GB ram, and I'm very happy about it.
>>
>>47703361
Most RAM is used by the part of the OS that handles drives the Shift key.
Since you're not using it, you will only need 8GB at most.

I only really start approaching all of my ram being used up when playing BF4. That game fuckin loves hogging ram. Otherwise I never go above 5 or so gigs.
>>
>>47703433
Don't buy a 3tb drive, all of the ones on the market right now have extremely high failure rates, go with a 4tb one or just 2 2tb ones
>>
>>47706702
Any drive can die, the failure rates are skewed by companies using a desktop HDD for enterprise. That's what the monitoring software and the warranties are for.
>>
>>47706746
Yes, but most 3tb drives on the market now have significantly higher failure rates

2x2TB drives will have a higher combined failure chance compared to 1x3TB.

I know that feel.

Graphics work eats up RAM like crazy.
I'd like to see the specs on the machines they use at Disney or Pixar studios.
>>
>>47706906
You don't have that much storage. Are you running out of room on your SSD? Upgrading to 256+ might not be a bad idea.
Your RAM is fine however it's single channel. Dual channel would be better.

Disgusting
Because not having
>4 gigs of ram for a ramdisk for normal programs
>1 gig for onboard graphics to use with GPU for graphical tasks (vsync and post processing)
>8 gigs for system and regular multitasking
>Rest is for gayman

Is heresy.
>>

Nah, my work PC has 32GB, 16 is reasonable for home use if you virtualise. It's also ridiculously cheap so go for it.
>>
>>47707360
Different anon here i play mutiple games at same time on my multi monitor setup. Is 8gb enough?
>>
>>47707409
If we're talking games that eat up 4 gigs of ram (most games made after 2011) then no.
>>
>>47707430
they are generally 2 gb. I should yolo and get 16gb i got the dosh anyway. Also photoshop eats that shit like an average american.
>>
the human eye can only perceive 2gb
anything above that is useless
>>
Honestly I don't see why anyone would need more than 256mb maybe 512Mb. Anything over that is overkill and useless
>>

>>
>>47707525
Not him but I was about to make a post asking who the fuck has 109MB images.

Then I stopped to think about one of the photographers I work with. He'll open twenty or so images at once, easily at ten megabytes a piece. I don't rightly know what camera he has as I'm about as inquisitive about his job as he is mine (read, not interested at all) so I don't rightly know the exact size, thankfully he's considerate enough to downscale images to around five megabytes a piece when he sends them. He'll easily bring his 32GB machine to it's knees.
>>
>>47707894

And when it comes to drawing, the filesizes can be even bigger.
Photoshop files can get pretty damn huge.
I have some unfinished pictures and the size is just over 130MB each.
Most of my pictures are just 10-50MB though.

So yeah, it's no wonder that Photoshop eats up RAM like crazy when you have few of those open at the same time.
Then add to that the browser you possibly have open for any reference stuff and you can pretty much slap an extra GB or two to the memory usage.
