Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Elementary OS is a terrible distribution. It has outdated repositories, poor default apps, poor security, terrible userbase support and terrible support in general, and its only draw, the visuals, aren't better than anything else in the industry.

If you're looking for a good beginning distribution install Ubuntu or Fedora with the Cinnamon desktop.

I really wouldn't do Linux Mint, if only because its website doesn't have https.

Mint is basically a mix of Debian and Ubuntu.

Debian is superior to Mint in a lot of ways, and will likely run better and be better supported, but in practice there wouldn't be a huge amount of difference.

There is one thing it can't do. There's probably some way to mod it to run higher than 720p.

I have a Ubuntu dual boot but it refuse to use it because it has the fucking worst godamn multimonitor support ever. I can't rotate one screen without it blacking out the other and making it un usable. Even with xrandr. All that happens is it rotates but the screen cannot be interacted with. That's a deal breaker for me. And don't say your just a skrub who can't into limux. I enjoy Ubuntu other than that its a beautiful os which allows for the customizations I like. I'm having trouble installing windows 10 on my SSD and Ubuntu 15.10 on my hard drive in UEFI mode. Couple questions.

Should all UEFI operating systems be installed on a USB? After the first is installed through CD, there is no working way for me to even boot from CD again let alone install a second OS.

Why do all Linux distros freeze while trying to load or install in Legacy BIOS mode?

Why aren't my hard drives in windows formattable? I can't even assign drive letters. Neither of them were encrypted before. Could it be because they're old?

Is it worth buying a second SSD for Ubuntu alongside windows and a 1TB drive to share media and install games to? Would Ubuntu be able to read movies and pictures(and save to) the drive in NTFS?

Finally, can somebody point me to information on UEFI? My A+ book barely covers this shit. I thought I was qualified; no wonder everybody thinks its a meme.

I was happily dualbooting Ubuntu 15.10 with Windows 10 when I upgraded the latter to the Threshold Update (November).

The upgrade did not complete and I was shown the grub_rescue prompt. I researched and used the bootrepair disk, which allowed me to complete the upgrade and booted me into Windows.

However, grub (understandably) was wiped out. Now Windows sees my Linux partition as free space (pic related).

How do I losslessly recover my Ubuntu partition? I don't have either the W10, Ubuntu 15.10 nor the bootrepair ISOs, but I can download them again if necessary.

that depends on exactly what you mean

you can restore to:
- another disk, a whole disk restoration will overwrite anything on that disk, a partition restoration will overwrite only the selected destination partition
- a directory on another disk (local, usb, etc), or network share (nfs, smb, ssh, etc), this will make a new folder, containing seperate image files per partition, along with some metadata describing the source (text files)

Day 197 into my tri-boot quest:

After fixing the Windows install that sade almost killed with its cheeky bootmanager antics, I hit a snag during Debian's installation: A corrupted CD.

photoshop does several things. Most of the linux tools are good for one thing, Krita and Gimp is decent, but if you do this in a professional setting maybe look into aftershot

For text editors, if you prefer graphical editors with the ctrl+key type hotkeys, kate and gedit are both decent, but kate is really good if you want to spend a few seconds with it.

I haven't used Ubuntu in a while, but the installer just uses gparted to format, so you could choose "Try Ubuntu" and launch Gparted to format before you use the installer.

The installer should be located on the Unity bar.

there's various ways and there's actually some live distros specialized in rescue iirc. However what i normally do is the following (disclaimer, please don't just enter the commands described here blindly and consider that the grub configuration steps changes depending on if you have bios or efi):

Boot to a live media, for example the 15.10 iso.
Mount your system in the hard drive to your live system running in ram and enter to your installed system with chroot. Once there use the grub-install command and the update-grub or the grub-mkconfig, then you'll be able so boot normally again. the steps are something like this:

- start live media
- open terminal
- check your ubuntu partition with gparted or with lsblk or fdisk -l
- once you know the correct partition, for example "/dev/sda5":

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
sudo chroot /mnt

- then to make the mbr to point to your grub again:

grub-install --recheck --target=i386-pc /dev/sda

- And to generate again the configuration file you can use update-grub or:

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

-restart and you should see grub

hope this helps.

Arch Linux and Ubuntu could use the same partition and if I don't want Ubuntu, then I can install something else and still share the music partition.

it's actually not much of a political argument

Linux is a kernel. That's it. It's the name that got popular so people just say "Linux" when referring to a whole OS. For this same reason people go around saying that Android is Linux. Sure, Android uses the Linux kernel, but it's misleading to say it is Linux due to what most people actually mean when they say that. If everyone says GNU/Linux to refer to the desktop OS, it makes it easier to discuss these confusing things.

Hurd's scope was much larger.
Linux was originally designed basically just to create a working Unix-like kernel on i386 that's small and fast. It wasn't too hard to do that.
Hurd, on the other hand, was supposed to be this big revelation of computing that was going to cure all the ills of every Unix server. And GNU couldn't pull that off.
Conceptually Hurd is pretty cool - it's like MINIX but not shitty. I haven't actually gotten my hands on a Hurd build, but I've a feeling that a native one will eventually pop up (now that Guix is a thing, a 'full GNU' distribution is right around the corner - somebody just needs to fill in the gaps, per se).
