Why haven't you switched to literally the best distro there is?

>not packed with bloat
>sleek, modern interface, actually looks like a piece of software from 2015 and not 2003
>Ubuntu software center (the best there is)
>very stable, doesn't break every 30 seconds like Arch
>isn't crippled to run on 3 bytes of RAM like Lubuntu
>based on Ubuntu so has good support and compatibility
>has a good DE unlike shitty Unity, Cinnamon or AutismDE (i3)

I used Xubuntu for a long time, until I switched to Debian with XFCE/KDE. I may switch back some day.

DE WM same shit

I use Xubuntu. It's nice.
well, I'm on Windows right now, but Xubuntu is my Linux distro of choice
>>
>>47651795
Well... I have.
I'm having technical problems switching all my devices, though.
Shame.
>>
>>47651795
Arch is stable if you aren't retarded and read the front page every time you update

Huh.

>how are those packages from the 18th century going?
>>
>>47652165
That would be an argument if you were comparing Debian to Fedora, but Ubuntu packages are for the most part just as old.
>>
I actually am using xubuntu 15.04 and I'm getting the urge to switch to mint 17.1, it's overall better IMO
Mate uses up about as much ram as xfce anyway

How do you get by without ppas
>>

With repos as large as these who needs addons?

Ubuntu has bigger repos than Debian fagnigger

How can you say that when you can't live without adding personal package archives?

Because Xfce is deprecated

What replaces it?

GNOME.
>>

LxQt will
>>
Ubuntu Mate is the new hotness now.
>>
>>47652346
GNOME is ugly though, looks like something from 2003, don't see how it could replace xfce

>>47652347
LXqt is also ugly shit, plus it's for garbage dump computers, it's not really a replacement for xfce. It's the successor to lxde
>>
xfce is very comfy oob, but I only really like the whisker menu and maybe the very clean and compact settings section. dmenu is a better panel, xfwm is nothing special, I don't use the desktop except for wallpaper, task manager is garbage, sessions are garbage, etc

thunar and mousepad are pretty nice tho
>>
>>47651795
But I am using it.

>>47652404
What's that about ugly?
>>
>>47652419
Mousepad is a rebranding of Leafpad and Thunar is superior only to Nautilus ie everything is better than it.
>>
>>47651795
I want to, but for some unknown reason the Xubuntu installer would freeze at formatting the root partition.

Really shoddy actually.
>>
>>47652464
Jesus Christ that's abysmal, the icons are straight outta windows 95

Even stock Ubuntu looks better than that shit! Yikes!
>>
>>47652256
not if you compare apples to apples.
universe and multiverse repos aren't officially supported by Canonical and there's no security team looking after them.

that leaves Ubuntu's main repo which is ~3,150 packages compared to Debian's 20,500.
>>
>>47652497
Stock Ubuntu is gorgeous so that's not saying much.
>>
>>47652490
I'd use leafpad but it doesn't have open recent lol
What would you say is the best GUI file manager? ranger's alright but I haven't gotten used to it
>>
>>47652521
Recent is botnet and should not be trusted. Pick any other DE and use the default file manager and text editor that comes with it.
>>
>>47652506
Stock Ubuntu is mediocre at best.

The only stock Linux distros that look remotely decent are Xubuntu and Kubuntu (with KDE5)
>>
how can I maximize my battery life on xubuntu?

I get 3 hours of battery life when I turn off my wi-fi. I keep my bluetooth off. I dim my screen as much as possible. What else can I do
>>
>not rolling release

You're misusing the word mediocre and that's not the least of the problems with your post.

As a fun fact, this picture was made on the version of Pinta which comes in the Ubuntu repos, a version which is .3 versions behind and makes resizing selections a huge hassle.

Honestly the only thing I would change about Gnome 2 is to make the titlebar the same color as the back / border of the application and add a search / run feature to the Application menu. Aside from that Gnome 2 was pretty good.

Honestly I've been a Xubuntu fan in the past but with Ubuntu MATE, I just can't bring myself to install it anymore. Ubuntu MATE is fan-fucking-tastic.
>>
What do you guys think about Elementary? Do you recommend it?
>>
>>47653579
Depends on what you want it for. The OS is outdated from day one. If it's just for a notebook which you're going to use only for browsing the web, probably.

I wouldn't recommend using on your main PC, unless you want something mac alike.
>>
>>47651795
ahh, i've had it install for about six months. i fucking love et <3

i do have to reinstall it. i'm a bit behind on updates, but last time i did a distro update all my shit got fuk'd. so i'm planning on just doing a clean re-install
>>
>>47653606
Exactly my thoughts. I have elementaryOS installed on the laptop that I keep in the living room just for random browsing, emails, and flinging things to my TV with Chromecast.

Even further than it just not being very up to date, it just doesn't seem to go well on a desktop. It's a very mouse driven interface that just really sucks on a desktop. With a trackpad though? It's pretty great.
>>
>>47653574
When will that spin go official?
Just tried out mint mate last night after a year of lub/xub and it was really nice, considering switching completely
I think a lot more people miss Ubuntu 8.04 than anyone realises
>>
>>47652419
i dont like thunar that much, it's my only gripe

the thumbnails are inconsistant, and there's no file trees in the side pane. there's so many other little things that windows explorer did that i was used too, that seem like minimal functionality, till i used thunar
>>
>>47653645
Today! With 15.04 Ubuntu MATE becomes an official flavor!
>>
>>47653606
What distro do you recommend then? I use my laptop for browsing, watching movies, listening to music and light gaming
>>
>>47653650
I actually used to use Nemo from Cinnamon on my Xubuntu box.
