oh yeah this is so much better than going to walmart

You messed up, OP!

3D printers are for prototyping unique designs or things that are difficult to obtain, we haven't yet reached the point where it's more convenient to manufacture things at home than it is to go out and buy them.

But I was told 3D printers were going to change everything, nobody would have to buy anything anymore because we could just print it using the plastic thread we bought with our bitcoins.

Why do you need screws? You can 3D print anything you could want but you choose to want screws?

Be patient? It will probably be decades before we have cheap portable printers that can print solid objects like a screw with the strength of steal.

you wouldn't download a car

It is, NASA has them for printing complex parts which are difficult to machine.
>>
>>47648149

You wouldn't steel a policeman's helmet, then poo in it
>>
>>47648136
what do you think smelting is, even if its a roundabout solution you could use a 3D print to print a female mold and then use that to create the actual steel mold via another compartment of the 3D printer.

nothings impossible.

3d printers will be the shit for restoring old cars.

Lemme just heat up my 3d printer on my desk to 3000 F
>>
>>47648136
you can just 3d print metal you know
the turbos and exhaust of the Koenigsegg One:1 are 3d printed. the exhaust is titanium.

If you've ever tried to make things like valve components, gears, etc. via normal subtractive means, you'd realize the benefit of having a 3d printer for some rapid prototyping.

As in squirted out of a tube or poured in a mold in kiln

i've worked with metal printing prototype printers

there's this aluminum one, it print withing a closed capsule vacuum with no oxygen to avoid oxidation, allowing to do cold welding of the aluminum, which is heated just enough that i can be exit the small nozzle and then cold down and become solid

this machines however are larger than conventional plastic printers because a large heater is required to heat the metal, and a device that can create the vaccum, and currently this model required active cooling of the figure to avoid deformations from the heat of the nozzel
>>
>>47648387
no mold, actually 3d printed, which allowed them to have moving parts inside the turbo which they couldn't do with a mold
>>
>>47647893

you're missing the point

a screw that you can buy at walmart isnt the kind of thing you would 3d print. it's for when you need something you can't buy at walmart like custom plastic housing, certain sized gears, specific valves, shit of that nature.

Even though you can 3d print metal I was thinking more along the lines of a new composite material. There are some major hurdles to overcome but I think a buttfuckton of money will be thrown at this in the years to come.

A major use of a 3D printer will be all the denizens of /tg/ having a big circlejerk about never having to pay for miniatures ever again.

I can see it now, those types of shenanigans will probably lead to you getting dropped by your insurance and voiding your warranty on the car because they can't trust retards to not unfuck their cars with truly custom parts
