ThinkPad's don't overheat like Macbooks. They have a more solid build quality that uses magnesium, 33% lighter than aluminum and stronger. And composite plastics with carbon which is also far lighter and more durable. The argument that ThinkPads have a far higher performance can also be made due to the thermal constraints of the Macbook, the ThinkPad basically runs in turbo mode on all cores indefinitely with no cooling issues.

You can buy a mini pcie connector for video cards. I bought one for a firepro card because muh 3d printing. It's a pain in the ass because on my x240 you have to remove the bottom case then you have to route minipcie connector through the bottom to the graphics card. It works well though.

My work place uses Lenovo for the executives and new models. Fairly good machines, the VIPs like it, higher end models rarely crap out but the lower end 600-1500 dollar range tend to crap out fairly often. T series have display problems, just simply die, bad components.

I bought a T420 for my CS undergrad a few years ago and it's still holding up strong. In fact it looks brand new despite being carried around in my backpack all those years. The rubber coating hasn't faded.
My T420 has survived two large spills directly into the keyboard. Drainage holes. They work. Spills happen.
Once you get used to the nipple, touchpads seem horribly slow, and mice aren't worth carrying around.
I like the keyboard more than the chiclet-style keyboards that have taken over. It's as close as you're going to get to a mechanical keyboard on a laptop.
Matte screen means I can use my laptop outside or sitting next to a window on the train without looking at a sheet of solid glare. I've used Macbook Pros in similar conditions, and while I think they are decent laptops, the glare on the screen ruins the experience.
I never have to worry about compatibility problems with Linux or *bsd.
I still get over 8 hours of battery life with a bright screen, and the battery has not been replaced once (in approximately 4 years of heavy use.) When I bought it, I was getting 14 hours easily. That's pretty damn good... (Can you even replace the MBP battery without sending the whole damn machine to Apple?)
Lenovo has tarnished the Thinkpad brand somewhat with their "modernized" releases, but they've left the T series formula largely as it was when IBM left the scene. They want money. The T series makes them money. They aren't stupid.
(Almost) every programmer I know uses either a Thinkpad T-series, or a MBP. Keep in mind the MBP costs about twice as much for the same specs. As a broke college student the choice was a no-brainer.
That is why /g/ still loves Thinkpad.
