Is anyone else sick of how exponentially invasive the internet has become in the past 5 years

-email services require your phone number

Combine this with government agencies recording all this information forever and you have an incredibly dangerous mixture.
This is nuclear weapons for the 21st century.

I am. Once I'm done with this semester I'm canceling my gmail and then I'll be free from that botnet.
>>

Yep. I'm really surprised how willing people are willing to let themselves be tracked, myself included.

But Facebook is definitely crossing the line.

Yes.
I just do not sign up for any 'social' web accounts.
>>
If it weren't so convenient for staying in touch with friends and organising events I'd be done with FB in an instant.

How easy is it to set up your own email address? Does it have any disadvantages that my gmail one wouldn't?
>>
>email services
Have reliable internet? Get a home server and setup Postfix. Need webmail? Roundcube.

>youtube accounts
A YouTube account is unnecessary for consuming content. Add a VPN to anonymise yourself, however.

Setup your own social network on a VPS for you to use in order to communicate with close family and friends.

Purchase a TV that is not smart, add a computer with Kodi (previously known as XBMC) installed on it.

What?

I've never heard this. Does it help that my Smart TV is not connected to the internet?

I have a Panasonic VT50. So it's a few years old. Does that matter?

Yeah, but what can you do?

I mean it feels like I'm a guy trying to plug a hole in a dam. And everytime I plug one hole, a new hole appears.

I wouldn't worry too much about your voice being recorded until there are better voice-detection algorithms. Basically, the better siri gets the more fucked you are, since everything you say can get stored as plaintext instead of audio. Not so much for storage, but for searching for keywords and such, and so your data becomes valuable and kept forever since it can be searched for interests and activities for advertisers, or for government agencies who might want to scrutinise everything you've ever said and paint you with any brush.
>>
>>47593440

its all happened after facebook and social media bullshit got so popular. Advertiser fucktards from big media companies saw that how people share every thing about themselves on social media and then advertisers from big media companies integrated themselves and their nasty business practises into social media, internets, smartphones, smart tvs etc. There was advertising and ads on interwebs before facebook but it was never invasive/intrusive that.
>>
I've got my own domains, but I'm a bit reluctant to use them for email with those public whois databases around.
And with privacy protect services you don't own your domain and those people are often obligated to sell their client files.

The biggest innovation in the invasive internet space was smartphones.
Now you can monitor people all the time!
Instead of people having to pull a networked device out of their bag or sit down at a desk, they carry around a device that's always networked, and always recording everything they do on it, all the damn time.
Smartphones are hopefully going to be seen in 100 years as we see nuclear weapons now. We can understand why they were made, but they shouldn't be used for ethical reasons.

I'd get a smartphone if it was really just like a small PC. Physical keyboard would be nice, so that it doesn't have to load some virtual keyboard software if I want to access low-level parts of the system.

Until I can install gentoo on a smartphone, with coreboot (or something like that), smartphones are a no deal.
You just don't get enough control over the software.

I'm sick of this shit man

I'm a CS student in central europe working towards master's degree and everyone insists on using facebook for communication so I'm forced to use it too

You'd think someone who studies computer science would be smarter than this, but no. Let's not use emails, let's not use sane methods of communications, let's put it all on facebook.

At least I registered under a fake name and didn't give away any personal info, but that still doesn't matter because facebook mobile app looks through your contact list and reports findings to Suckerberg.
Even if you avoided facebook all this time, your "normalfag" friends already added you to its database. And they know your phone number and email.

Shit sucks.

Gmail doesn't require phone number unless their bot detects that your IP could be spammer's IP.
I created several fake Gmail accounts in 2015 without phone number.
Plus, any other e-mail service most likely won't require one.
You might need alternate e-mail account though.

>Even if you avoided facebook all this time, your "normalfag" friends already added you to its database.

Yep, that's the biggest problem for me. I don't use FB, I don't care that some people call me autistic or anti social, but I am still there. I am on pictures, I am tagged with my name, people talk about what I did on some party etc.
It's still less information, than if I had my own account, but it's still bothering me. Not only because some government agencies might see it, but also just random people will see it, I don't want some shmock to see me drunk on a party, just because he kinda knows one of my freinds.

But the normies will never delete those pictures.

Of course we'd have to consent. We all do. EULA's are written in such language, most people wouldn't understand. EULA's are also very vague, can be interpreted in many ways, are often 10+ pages long and have references to related policies and/or EULA's. Can you remember the license agreements of all the software you are using?

And ofcourse I know ixquick is a Google proxy. That's the whole point...

I just hope it won't go the way of lavabit. Also, I could see people getting annoyed about not being able to recover their mailbox password. But I'm still very hopeful that this would seriously give gmail a run for its money.

Notice how Apple has the only public representative (CEO) who has made a public statement on the matter?

>>
>>47595803
but I mean like, in the future when people start using this as their primary email account, that password will be pretty damn important. If they lose it, they lose all kinds of extremely crucial information. It's not just about talking to your friends and shooting the shit. What if giant businesses, doctors, etc start using this and the information they store on there becomes critical? Losing that mailbox password with no way to recover it could be devastating, and a big reason for them not to make the switch to protonmail.

Or maybe not, I don't know. Maybe with enough warnings not to forget that password people will be able to handle it.

One way of beginning to understand privacy is by looking at what happens to people in extreme situations where it is absent. Recalling his time in Auschwitz, Primo Levi observed that "solitude in a Camp is more precious and rare than bread." Solitude is one state of privacy, and even amidst the overwhelming death, starvation, and horror of the camps, Levi knew he missed it.... Levi spent much of his life finding words for his camp experience. How, he wonders aloud in Survival in Auschwitz, do you describe "the demolition of a man," an offense for which "our language lacks words."...

One function of privacy is to provide a safe space away from terror or other assaultive experiences. When you remove a person's ability to sequester herself, or intimate information about herself, you make her extremely vulnerable....

The totalitarian state watches everyone, but keeps its own plans secret. Privacy is seen as dangerous because it enhances resistance. Constantly spying and then confronting people with what are often petty transgressions is a way of maintaining social control and unnerving and disempowering opposition....

And even when one shakes real pursuers, it is often hard to rid oneself of the feeling of being watched -- which is why surveillance is an extremely powerful way to control people. The mind's tendency to still feel observed when alone... can be inhibiting. ... Feeling watched, but not knowing for sure, nor knowing if, when, or how the hostile surveyor may strike, people often become fearful, constricted, and distracted.
>>
>>47596497

How do you skip it in outlook?
>>
>>47593768
There are domains like .cat that provide extended consumer protection like a private whois that doesn't make you give away your domain ownership. The foundation that backs that TLD is pretty based: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ca&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Ffundacio.cat%2Fca%2Fnoticies%2Fes-el-dia-dinternet-i-tenim-un-regal-la-comunitat-cat

(that may not be the same way to you ofc, but...)

for me it's all a grand illusion lol
since I deleted fb, I didn't become a web hermit at all

I still talk to my really good friends on a daily basis over the internet, virtually everyone has another form of contact
unfortunatelly you can't cut out all proprietary stuff, as much as I would like to lol
but gtalk+email+whatsapp pretty much covers everyone at this point

and you know, on that stuff you actually talk to people stuff that matters more often
like, you are not giving likes on random posts or photos as a substitute for actual interactions with those people
you talk and send stuff that you think matters to them and they do the same to you
there's no social status bs involved, that is usually much better

and there are friends who you like that you aren't in contact anymore
but wtf, you don't talk to them anyway on fb
seeing what's up with their lives or they seeing yours on a social network is not friendship, it's bs (most of the time)
it's so much better if (assuming you still like each other) you meet each other by accident and catch up and actually say stuff that matters to each other

also people always say stuff like "but what about grills"
and it's pretty much the same
you just go there and talk
no "I sent the last message so now it's his turn bla bla bla" and whatnot
no "omg he didn't like my photo probably he doesn't like me"
no any of this bullshit

>After security researcher Jeffrey Paul upgraded the operating system on his MacBook Pro last week, he discovered that several of his personal files had found a new home – on the cloud. The computer had saved the files, which Paul thought resided only on his own encrypted hard drive, to a remote server that Apple controls.

I am a bit annoyed that just about every fucking mobile app and even a lot of regular web-based services are now requesting a valid phone number to send a verification code to or call.

I tried to make a new Tinder profile to get my fuck on with some roastlets with my wifi tablet and it wanted a mobile number. I shouldn't need to give my number to get in on some degeneracy.

You guys are ridiculous. Why don't you just relax and realize nobody really cares and you have nothing to fear if you're doing nothing illegal. Enjoy your smart TV, your smart watch, your wifi toaster. Nobody at the Utah Data Center is really going to look at your dick or cunt pics more than a few times anyway, and so what if they have a few orgasms?

always these arguments;

>if you don't something to hide you shouldn't care
>if you are not criminal you shouldn't care
>your information is not important you shouldn't care

fuck off. because of it's on internets, smartphones, smart tvs etc it's not really different than tracking, watching someone in real life. For example almost all websites have google analytics and google adsense. Even if you don't use any google product/services google keeps track of you wherever you go, what you do on internets. Do you like idea of somebody watching, tracking wherever you drive or go irl? (actually google track your gps data wherever you go if you have android phone irl too) or do you like sucking big corporate cocks for nothing?

That business model; turning private info of people to profit is cancerous and defective.
>>
>>47593440
>>-Facebook peddles your info to advertisers
it is the exact opposite, advertisers sell your personal info to facebook so that facebook can target it's ads better.

And what they know about you is worse than you think. The first thing you need to know is that your credit card company is a fucking dick who sells your information to advertizers. The second thing you need to know is that you should never use your email address at stores and stuff, because that's how advertizers recognize you when you don't use a credit card. A lot of stores sell your purchase information too. Oh and anywhere you made an account that used the same email address? Yup advertizers got ya. Email addresses are one way they recognize you.

Oh look anon bought mountain dew, doritos, some stuff from "bad-dragon.com," and some stuff from "chinese-cartoon-figurines.com," looks like anon is a huge faggot, let's send him ads for huge faggots.

In the future this might become, anons purchase give suspicion that anon might be a pedophile, let's report anon to the FBI!

My friend who works at facebook says that if you really want to your information to stay private, you should never use a credit card and never sign up for anything that requires an email address(if you must, you should have at least 20 different email addresses).
>>
>>47600792

>sign up for anything that requireds one e-mail address

>>
>>47600736
Maybe I said it weird. What I was trying to say was that GNU/Linux, BSD, Haiku, and all of the other free operating systems exist to provide a viable option for most users. To be sure, they are not nor will they ever be as "user friendly" as Windows or OS X, but they still attract enough users that Apple and Microsoft have an incentive to innovate.

I personally think anyone could learn Ubuntu or another Debian based distro without too much hassle. There are some changes, but for the most part it's not that high of a learning curve. There are some people who cannot and will not learn anything new, but fuck those people. They suck and they deserve Windows and OS X.

In closing, if my Mom can learn to use Mint in a few weeks, so can you.

If you ask me Ubuntu is extremely retard friendly. It's as easy a smartphone with that store of theirs.

In my experience the people that struggle with Linux distros are the Windows "power users". They figured the ins and outs of that OS and are generally handy with computers but knowing all the menus and options in Windows is completely useless when dealing with Linux. If you want to do anything advanced with distros you're going to have to read and command line stuff, make choices between lots of options all of which you don't even know yet. At which point they'll bail because who the fuck uses command prompt amirite?

imo Facebook makes things worse. Too many people would rather sit alone in their room and FB chat with other like minded people rather than actually meet up with some friends and do something. OR even worse, say some people actually DO meet up with their friends, but then everyone is staring at their phones and saying nothing.
