Maybe I said it weird. What I was trying to say was that GNU/Linux, BSD, Haiku, and all of the other free operating systems exist to provide a viable option for most users. To be sure, they are not nor will they ever be as "user friendly" as Windows or OS X, but they still attract enough users that Apple and Microsoft have an incentive to innovate.
I personally think anyone could learn Ubuntu or another Debian based distro without too much hassle. There are some changes, but for the most part it's not that high of a learning curve. There are some people who cannot and will not learn anything new, but fuck those people. They suck and they deserve Windows and OS X.
In closing, if my Mom can learn to use Mint in a few weeks, so can you.

In my experience the people that struggle with Linux distros are the Windows "power users". They figured the ins and outs of that OS and are generally handy with computers but knowing all the menus and options in Windows is completely useless when dealing with Linux. If you want to do anything advanced with distros you're going to have to read and command line stuff, make choices between lots of options all of which you don't even know yet. At which point they'll bail because who the fuck uses command prompt amirite?
