Anyone pick up computers from thrift stores here?

Picked up an old Ayylmaoware for $60

Has a Phenom IIx4 965, a Radeon 5770 and a 2tb drive

The videocard is overheating and shutting the thing off so I gotta reapply thermal paste to it
>>
Never seen a computer in a thrift store in my life, let alone a half-decent one. I did grab a few old Core 2 Duo machines when my local college was throwing them out though.
>>
>buying used computers

Have fun getting ass raped in prison when you get busted for cp.
>>
Yeah, I do. Local shop that sells them for cheap. Just old computers clients never paid for services rendered or came back to pick up.

I spend $50-$200 on them(mouse, keyboard, monitor included), clean them, fresh paste, system wipe.

Then, I find what I can do to the tower. What cheap little upgrades I can do, then drop them on Craig's list. I don't really make much profit, but it's a hobby that pretty much pays for itself and gets more computers to more people.

REEEEEEEE
also, nice trips
>>
>>47570998
Actually all that was on it TOR, LoL, a bunch of shitty 420chan memes and a season of naruto
>>
>>47570939

I built my rig in 2010. It has the same card and a phenom II X4 940.

I paid 800 dollars

>doesn't know how people hide CP
>>
>>47571019
Thanks.

Don't worry. Just normie computers.

I still haven't made back my initial investment. Four or five more computers, and I can start doing this at cost.

It's usually increased ram, maybe dedicated graphics if I can find a card for the board(nothing major). Some times I can upgrade the disc drive to a DVD reader.

OP here, this is the culprit videocard if anyone has any experience

The vapor-x bit seems a bit dodgy
>>
>>47571057
How much profit do you make on them, and how many have you worked on?
>>
>>47571136
I'd say repaste is all if it's overheating, and if you need to replace the fan. Worst case scenario is you have to spend up to $50 on a new card.
>>
>>47571109

before rebates, yes
>>
>>47571281

I've only done four so far. I do aim for a twenty five percent profit(parts only, no labor charge), and expect to be haggled down to fifteen. Largest profit I made was about $125 on one computer. I only do one at a time due to desk space. If I get another desk, I'll bump up production.

youre my hero. i want to do the same thing.

here is a budget byo comp for light officework

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gqxRbv

Now sooner than later is definitely the time to recycle old technology, but this amd5350 build has incredible value
>>
>>47571926
Only thing I'd change is see if you can't save a couple dollars by doing 2*2gb dual channel ram, willing to go as low as 1333mhz. For an office build, that'll be plenty fine. In a situation like that, you want to err on the side of profit when performance won't be noticeably affected negatively.
>>
>>47571926
Also, keep in mind monitor and peripherals. I'm certain mouse and keyboard combos can be acquired for $20 or less.

Output to any inexpensive 1080p@60Hz, and this build is set for mass purchase, bundled sales. Let people know they can do Facebook, Netflix, basic web surfing, documents and resumes, and you have a way to bring new, solid computers to just about any area en masse.

Included, sufficient power supply in case, and the case looks like it can solidly handle lasting flat with the monitor affixed on top for a smaller for print.

Laying flat*

Smaller footprint*

Well I picked up a couple of 16:9, 19 inch monitors for $10 a piece. One didn't work and the others were fine.

Hey! Old toys are nice! Look at it! Two game ports, a serial, a parallel, a VGA, looks like two ps/2, for certain two rj 11, most likely 14kb/s. The third potential rj 11 is probably a 28k...

...

Where is my return to zork box...?

Built in modem and also a LAN card? Bretty good, would try to browse the web just to see how ridiculously slow it is

>The third potential rj 11
...is an RJ45 jack, alongside a DB15 with the unique locking bracket that identifies it as an AUI connector. That's an Ethernet adapter. If you squint, you can see the link and activity indicators on the other side of the RJ45 jack from the AUI connector. Also, that's only one game port and a single DB9M serial. The other port that you're taking for serial is a DE15 for VGA output. But hey, at least you got the PS/2 and RJ11 jacks right, right?

So, the amd5350 only supports one channel, so dual dimms doesn't have some of its normal benefits, but i can definitely save money by dropping to 1333mhz.

>>
>>47570939
picked up an inpiron 519 from a savers 2 weeks ago
cleaned out the heatsink and put new thermal paste on the cpu
bought a usb wireless adapter( i use my neighbors wifi on my laptop)
put a radeon 6540 graphics card on it
put windows 7 on it
the only wrong with it is that the disk drive doesn't work.
i can play kingdom hearts on it on psx2, but that is it in terms of gaming
I kind of want to upgrade my cpu, but i cannot find any info on the motherboard so I am stuck at 2.33 GHZ
>>
>>47572393
Totally missed the activity leds.

Everything else, fuck.

Guess I can't identify as much as I thought I could... Curse being mid twenties!

I get the majority of my peripherals from thrift stores.
802.11n routers, wireless cards, mechanical keyboards, gaming mice, monitors, sound cards, laptops, even some processors. Usually a wire is frayed, coke was spilt on it, screen cracked or the owner was an idiot. My current router had a ton of dead roaches inside and my laptop had a cracked screen (replaced for $50).

I do use freecycle for free computers occasionally. I got a portege m200 recently. It was cannibalized but I hope to fix it to make a drawing tablet. Before that I got a "vista-ready" P4 desktop which I hope to upgrade with a core 2 duo, underclock and turn it into a beastly router.
>>
I've bought a couple of used laptops. Replaced a hard drive on one, a keyboard on one, and opened up the third to scrape out melted chocolate. Two i3-2330ms and an Atom. Total cost ~$184, $205 after upgrading the ram on one to 4gb.

Dayum, I don't like ayyylienware, but that's a mean deal.

If you were really that paranoid, you could just encrypt the entire drive, throw away the password, then wipe.

that looks like a stock Intel cooler under that. Thinner of course but the fin patterns seem to match.

I had one in 2005 or so and did the cellular mod to it, could hear wireless homephones and old as fuck cell phones.

I think I only caught 4-5 one sided conversations, mostly just police stuff.

Nowadays with everything being digital and trunked you will be lucky to hear anything on it.
>>
>>47570939
Lucky fag.

I wish the thrift stores around my area sold shit like that. Wouldn't mind a few of those around the house.
