mpv+pulse problem:
mpv keeps pointing to ALSA even though I say in its config file to point to Pulse. I've already tested with a simple echo-like command that, indeed, the config file is being read. But it still refuses to use Pulse by default.
The weird thing is, it works fine if I say "mpv --ao=pulse" on the command line. But putting "ao=pulse" in mpv.conf does nothing. So, it seems bizarre to me that it thinks the pulse driver isn't working when it works fine when I directly ask it to use it.

"OK, what the fuck?" I said to myself. After weirdly thinking the problem wouldn't go away, I started looking into the culprit. While I dreaded having to face ALSA, I realized and remembered that PulseAudio got updated recently. I still barely know how to configure it, but I also knew that PAVUcontrol is much more powerful than it looks.
And, indeed, that led to the solution:

Except, in my case, I'd want to point the config to something that's plugged in. Weirdly enough, Pulse would switch to one of the digital (and thus, unhearable to me) streams after an unplug but then would not switch back.
It also pointed me to the solution to a concurrent problem I had with mpv. It stopped being able to play audio via Pulse and would only work by being pointed to Alsa. I found that it, too, was being directed to a digital stream.
(sidenote: even after somewhat fixing this, I still ran into problems with mpv per >>52625085 and >>52625327. The solution? Well, as I said, "mpv would only work by being pointed to Alsa".......and about a day ago, I made mpv's alias "mpv --ao=alsa". Yeah, complete idiotic of me to forget that...)

Overall, sure, kind of a pain. But from experience, I know I never would have figured out a solution in, say, Ubuntu 12.04 (the last Linux I used seriously before Windows migration). So, I'm not too salty.

Systemd is a nearly untanglable mess that has consumed many components of the core of many systems. The devs even downplay the number of functions it has subsumed (read pottering's tantrums- he'll place it somewhere between 18-30something, but the actual number is north of 70). Many have been added to this mess for no particular reason - gnome3 and pulseaudio, as examples. So far, I know only of gnome3 having been safely extricated from the mess. By pulling all these crucial systems into one point of failure (dependent upon pid1, the process that should never ever ever fail), Linux's famed reliability diminishes. No longer are required reboots limited to new kernels and distribution upgrades, but to anything that falls under the umbrella of systemd. Hope nothing breaks, because many logs are now in binary format, so you need a functioning system to parse them, but if your system worked, you wouldn't need to read them. Its like Windows' svchost paired with the laughable "do you want windows to find a solution?" and topped of with extremely long, pretty much unreadable logs that require a second machine and an on-site tech.
With Red Hat pulling many of their otherwise great contributions to linux under this umbrella, this means you either join them, or your project is starved for basic features (or you reinvent the wheel).
Oh, and if you ever speak ill of systemd, the pottering internet defense force jumps on you.
I got mpd working perfectly, then when I restarted my computer the .pid file disappeared. When I try to start mpd it says the port is busy, when I try --kill it says it won't work without the .pid. I tried making a new .pid in /.mpd but it says it can't be read. What do?

Very Beginner User here! Ubuntu 14.04
While going through installation, I do not get an option to dual boot or rewrite, instead it takes me to a BLANK partition table, and when I click anything it freezes up. When I try to "continue" it tells me "no root file system device", and to adjust it from the partition settings. All of the other ways to view partitions have found the separate partitions and say they're healthy, which include my C: and D:, along with my cd reader (which is running the installation)

Calculate Linux is VERY beginner friendly and it's just someone's precompiled Gentoo, so you get all the Gentoo cred with none of the hardwork.

I'm going to be building a new computer next year and intend to use linux for all my personal needs. There's one problem though, muh games.
I would prefer to limit the botnet's access to my computer as much as possible so the idea of running a windows vm with GPU passthrough seems to be the optimal plan since this would also allow me to not need to reboot frequently. That's the other alternative I was thinking of although it's not exactly preferable. It would be a lot better if I was coming from a system where I could grandfather the GPU in as the dedicated vm card and demote the current one every few generations when I upgrade, but sadly I'm not.

Drivers in Linux are, nine times out of nine, a part of the kernel already. It's very, very uncommon to have to actually install drivers because Linux is really good at automatically detecting stuff.
There's two exceptions.
One is your GPU. It's possible this may be autodetected anyway, but in case it isn't you'll want to install mesa if you've got an AMD, nouveu if you've got a Nvidia, and...well I dunno about Intel, check the wiki.
Two is printers. Can't help you here, I never bothered trying to install crazy printer drivers. Again, check the wiki, the Arch wiki is more or less the best resource available for Linux installation and configuration help.

To be honest I used Manjaro for quite a while (~4 months) and never ran into a stability issue. Used it with cinnamon (it was a minimal net install) and my X didn't break. As a catalyst user, I was not affected with the X-org 1.18 update that forced itself in Arch.
I have complains though. The minimal text mode installer comes with a bunch of extra packages than arch itself.

I've been using Arch itself for, I guess around eight months now (transitioned from Ubuntu, dual booting with Windows 7). Gone through three or four WM/DE setups (currently on Awesome + XFCE, but I'm considering dropping XFCE). AMD user as well.
It's never broken for me. In fact the only time I've ever had an Arch installation break on me was in a VM, when I tried to replace systemd with openrc after everything else was already setup. Network stopped working. Probably could have fixed it but didn't really care enough.
Manjaro, as you said, comes with a bunch of extra shit that you don't need. Even if you don't have stability issues you're still getting a worse system than Architect or Arch itself will give you.
