Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Hello FLT,

I am going to put a linux distro on my x200(or x201 cant remeber) for class. But I am not sure which distro would be the best for what I want. This machine will act as a host for a number of all different kinds of VMs (all linux VMs if it matters). What should I check out for this purpose?

Literally any you fancy, ubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu, debian, arch, opensuse, fedora, arch, gentoo, funtoo.

I've had issues on and off for the last few months. Update your sources for another mirror, it's still slow but bearable. I'm in straya too.

mpv+pulse problem:

mpv keeps pointing to ALSA even though I say in its config file to point to Pulse. I've already tested with a simple echo-like command that, indeed, the config file is being read. But it still refuses to use Pulse by default.

The weird thing is, it works fine if I say "mpv --ao=pulse" on the command line. But putting "ao=pulse" in mpv.conf does nothing. So, it seems bizarre to me that it thinks the pulse driver isn't working when it works fine when I directly ask it to use it.
>>
>>52625030
oh cool, There isn't any advantage to running any one distro over another when it comes to VMs?

Same language you used.
>maybe you can provide me a decent answer
I've already answered your question.
>Is it possible to use it as a main OS
Of course, that's the who purpose of it.
>or is there features on it that makes it impossible, restrictions?
That would defy the whole point of it being an OS.
>I'm asking this question because, being made by the DPRK gvt it's likely that there are some sorts of software/internet restrictions? amirite ?
No, you're not rite. Restrictions on the internet made by the government are not done on an OS level. What ever country you live in you are not able to view all websites, at least not without some work.
So I'll ask again, what exactly are you asking? Ignorance and/or miseducation is not a question.

So /g/ I installed Linux Mint and audio doesn't work. Tomorrow I'm installing ElementaryOS, if it doesn't work what do I do? Pulseaudio and alsa recognize the card, and it shows up as internal speaker. But it doesn't have any sound. It's not muted also.

Intel 5 Series/3400 chipset is the sound chipset.

If it doesn't work I'll try installing xubuntu and if it doesn't then I'm lost. It's my uncle's pc so I don't want to fuck up. He wants to switch to Linux but I have no idea how to fix this types of things. It's a Lenovo G640.

I think I just caught my first case of ">he fell for the Arch meme". Or maybe I didn't.

>having weird-ish audio problems the past few days
>(on a desktop, if that matters)
>if headphone jack is plugged in on reboot, sound works fine; everything goes great
>if they're not in on boot, or if i take out headphones during usage, they no longer get detected by the system

"OK, what the fuck?" I said to myself. After weirdly thinking the problem wouldn't go away, I started looking into the culprit. While I dreaded having to face ALSA, I realized and remembered that PulseAudio got updated recently. I still barely know how to configure it, but I also knew that PAVUcontrol is much more powerful than it looks.

And, indeed, that led to the solution:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/a/162757

Except, in my case, I'd want to point the config to something that's plugged in. Weirdly enough, Pulse would switch to one of the digital (and thus, unhearable to me) streams after an unplug but then would not switch back.

It also pointed me to the solution to a concurrent problem I had with mpv. It stopped being able to play audio via Pulse and would only work by being pointed to Alsa. I found that it, too, was being directed to a digital stream.

(sidenote: even after somewhat fixing this, I still ran into problems with mpv per >>52625085 and >>52625327. The solution? Well, as I said, "mpv would only work by being pointed to Alsa".......and about a day ago, I made mpv's alias "mpv --ao=alsa". Yeah, complete idiotic of me to forget that...)

so tl;dr:

* Arch updated to Pulse 8
* Weirdness happens (because of Pulse, mostly)
* Eventually fix it (kind of? sort of?)
* And then fix the problem that my quick-fix caused

Overall, sure, kind of a pain. But from experience, I know I never would have figured out a solution in, say, Ubuntu 12.04 (the last Linux I used seriously before Windows migration). So, I'm not too salty.

Systemd is a nearly untanglable mess that has consumed many components of the core of many systems. The devs even downplay the number of functions it has subsumed (read pottering's tantrums- he'll place it somewhere between 18-30something, but the actual number is north of 70). Many have been added to this mess for no particular reason - gnome3 and pulseaudio, as examples. So far, I know only of gnome3 having been safely extricated from the mess. By pulling all these crucial systems into one point of failure (dependent upon pid1, the process that should never ever ever fail), Linux's famed reliability diminishes. No longer are required reboots limited to new kernels and distribution upgrades, but to anything that falls under the umbrella of systemd. Hope nothing breaks, because many logs are now in binary format, so you need a functioning system to parse them, but if your system worked, you wouldn't need to read them. Its like Windows' svchost paired with the laughable "do you want windows to find a solution?" and topped of with extremely long, pretty much unreadable logs that require a second machine and an on-site tech.
With Red Hat pulling many of their otherwise great contributions to linux under this umbrella, this means you either join them, or your project is starved for basic features (or you reinvent the wheel).
Oh, and if you ever speak ill of systemd, the pottering internet defense force jumps on you.

clickable urls in urxvt haven't worked for me in a while, was just going to try to fix it

heard about xdg-open which sounds nice, kind of like when I could run stuff like x-www-browser on debian (I'm on arch now)

Very Beginner User here! Ubuntu 14.04
While going through installation, I do not get an option to dual boot or rewrite, instead it takes me to a BLANK partition table, and when I click anything it freezes up. When I try to "continue" it tells me "no root file system device", and to adjust it from the partition settings. All of the other ways to view partitions have found the separate partitions and say they're healthy, which include my C: and D:, along with my cd reader (which is running the installation)
here were my original issues and my post on the ask, which has gotten no replies. Since then I have the issues stated above.

It's baffling because I didn't run into this issue the FIRST time I tried to install it, until I ran into that
>Subprocess installed post-installation script returned error Exit status 1
error.
After that, and restarting my computer, it's hard to believe it's a hardware issue, but then on the flip coin, where in the soft ware after downloading a fresh copy a few times, would it have the exact same issues. No other users are reporting any installation issues, so I have a hard time believing it's a file error.
I'm set on that I'm too new at this and can't figure out how to put a partition on that blank menu.

Calculate Linux is VERY beginner friendly and it's just someone's precompiled Gentoo, so you get all the Gentoo cred with none of the hardwork.

For a presentation, I need to install Debian on 12 machines in 5 hours.
I won't have access to these machines until 10am and will only have until 3pm to be finished.

What is the most efficient way to burn 11 more Debian disks inbetween now (2am) and 10am?

Bring an Ethernet switch, set each computer to boot from PXE. You'll have to use your laptop as a local repository/PXE Server for this to work fast.

I'm going to be building a new computer next year and intend to use linux for all my personal needs. There's one problem though, muh games.

I would prefer to limit the botnet's access to my computer as much as possible so the idea of running a windows vm with GPU passthrough seems to be the optimal plan since this would also allow me to not need to reboot frequently. Although I'm aware that it's supposedly a pain to set up and requires specific hardware but I have a question before I research further and/or get my hopes up.

Since a surprisingly decent amount of my current games work on linux I would like to play those ones on linux(to encourage devs) and only rely on the vm for windows only games. Would I be able to use my primary GPU for gaming on linux, and then only send it to the vm once I actually start it? Or do I need to exclude it from linux from boot so that it's available?
>>
>>52628993
youll get tired of it and go back to windows pretty quick if gaming is of any importance to you

I have a separate hard drive for my games when I play games on windows. If I wanted to play those games on linux using wine, would I have to reinstall the game to my virtual C/ drive for wine?
>>

How so? Even if the vm plan doesn't work out it basically equates to the time to switch on a console so I don't see it being a big enough hassle to make me decide to deal with windows exclusively.

no, if the issue is related to firmware for your sound card than a new kernel version could help

>>
>>52628993
I'm not sure about using the main GPU for both. I know you can have the host use the integrated and pass through the discrete to the VM, but I don't know if you can use the discrete on the host and then shuffle it all around..

My brother does what you're talking about and just ended up getting a second discrete GPU to always pass through.

That's the other alternative I was thinking of although it's not exactly preferable. It would be a lot better if I was coming from a system where I could grandfather the GPU in as the dedicated vm card and demote the current one every few generations when I upgrade, but sadly I'm not.

I guess it's a question of how much I want to avoid microsoft...

>>
>>52630803
>How do I get drivers for my system on linux?
Drivers in Linux are, nine times out of nine, a part of the kernel already. It's very, very uncommon to have to actually install drivers because Linux is really good at automatically detecting stuff.
There's two exceptions.
One is your GPU. It's possible this may be autodetected anyway, but in case it isn't you'll want to install mesa if you've got an AMD, nouveu if you've got a Nvidia, and...well I dunno about Intel, check the wiki.
Two is printers. Can't help you here, I never bothered trying to install crazy printer drivers. Again, check the wiki, the Arch wiki is more or less the best resource available for Linux installation and configuration help.

Because your files are not wiped, just the filesystem that knows where everything is.

If you actually want to wipe the drive clean you'll have to do at least one zero pass or whatever.
Still doable, but we're talking hours rather than seconds.

To be honest I used Manjaro for quite a while (~4 months) and never ran into a stability issue. Used it with cinnamon (it was a minimal net install) and my X didn't break. As a catalyst user, I was not affected with the X-org 1.18 update that forced itself in Arch.
I have complains though. The minimal text mode installer comes with a bunch of extra packages than arch itself.

I've been using Arch itself for, I guess around eight months now (transitioned from Ubuntu, dual booting with Windows 7). Gone through three or four WM/DE setups (currently on Awesome + XFCE, but I'm considering dropping XFCE). AMD user as well.
It's never broken for me. In fact the only time I've ever had an Arch installation break on me was in a VM, when I tried to replace systemd with openrc after everything else was already setup. Network stopped working. Probably could have fixed it but didn't really care enough.

Manjaro, as you said, comes with a bunch of extra shit that you don't need. Even if you don't have stability issues you're still getting a worse system than Architect or Arch itself will give you.

you'll have to install the prerequisites for the software, although a lot of the time the program comes with a 'configure' shell script which will tell you befor eyou compile.

anyway you'll have to install xcb
>>
>>52631187
Because you use nouveau I guess. Get the proprietary driver. Nvidia doesn't release documentation.
>>
>>52631833
I actually thought about that, and installed xcb before, but im still getting the same error.
Do i need to restart the comp for it or?
>>

sudo apt-get install libxcb-xinerama0-dev
sudo apt-get install libxcb-randr0-dev
cd bar

sudo make install
