Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size - makes you look autistic
X220 - 12.5", lightweight - shit resolution
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (no, not the old ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
>you will get laughed at for looking like an autistic neckbeard

My x200s is becoming a pain to use (absolutely shit ccfl screen, weak battery, 2 out of 3 usbs not working, cracks on the body, 2gb ram - can be upgraded but not sure if to invest in it now) and I have two options:
a) Local guy is selling x200s with better CPU than i have (1.86 > 1.6 GHz), 2gb ram, good battery and and broken screen for about 30$ (please note this is in Europe so everythings more expensive). I could scavange it, buy affs, put my old screen in it and sell it for some bucks. I just love x200s.

b) I could invest about 500€ to get something more recent. But newer x2** are heavier, have 16:9 and honestly, if i invested that much, i want something fancy. X1 is cool but could afford only 1st gen which has shit screen.

I usually just type, browse interents etc on linux with awesome, so weak CPU shouldnt matter much, should it?

Still not satisfied with the responses in the previous thread of what makes Thinkpad more worth it than e.g. a Viao, Samsung, or even HP.
I've tried the red clitoris and I can see how it's helpful, and I'd admit I am a fan of non-chiclet keyboards. I guess I can see that they're sturdy and stable, too. But choosing a Thinkpad over anything else seems like preference, as in "well I like ugly laptops" rather than something based in reason, like they objectively have better specs.

Option A, I pretty much did that,
>old busted x61
>bought a x200s with cracked screen
>bought an affs panel
>sold x61 that almost covered the cost of the x200s
X200s is comfy is fuck and i love it.

Ok, let me autism this out for you: if you don't get why you should get one, then you should not get one. The thing with those ones is, they're pretty much more durable than anything else while providing some pro-features that others don't: docking stations, safe closing mechanisms, super-duper giant ass batteries (x220 with slice+9cell works 17 hours straight), and god almighty, those ports: x220 can handle an msata ssd, a regular 2,5 sata hdd, some 3g on express card or a god damn EGPU on that.

>>

Another x200s would hold you over for another year or two. Upgrade the ram though. In a year, the x220 will be dirt cheap and still very usable. Upgrade then. They're already around 120 burgers, so it just depends on your budget.
>>
>>52619075
Go full 420, if possible. I've got so much autism that I checked the benchmarks for pretty much any new thinpad aviable, and anything besides t420 is not worth your fucks given. t430 and newer got CPUs on pretty much the same level, and they go to shit with those brown casings. t400 is also a bit too slow nowadays, so anon, you're blessed by all the fucks I give to get t420.
>>
>>52619008
The negative reviews I read said they have short battery life and are missing a few ports (like HDMI).
As for other stuff like i7 core that's in no way exclusive to the ThinkPad. Might as well get something else with that.

This just seems like one of those threads where everyone's bragging about their dumbfuck mac.

I am interested in playing around with Linux though, how much better is the "support" from a ThinkPad?

I might pick up a cheap or old one. But the $1000 ones, those I don't understand I guess.

This is the best ThinkPad ever. Prove me wrong:
>i7-3520m @ 3.4GHz
>possibility of upgrading it to i7-3632qm after resoldering (can be done for about $50)
>16GB 2133MHz RAM
>mSATA SSDs up to 1TB
>2,5" bay for 2TB HDDs/SSDs
>IPS low power screen
>eGPU OOB posibility
>illuminated keyboard + thinklight
>possibility of replacing the keyboard with the x220 one
>battery life up to 12 hours on 9cell battery, 25 hours on 9 cell + ultradock one
>completely quiet, the fan rarely turns itself on

The HDMI is lacking on older machines, that's because the pro-pc users need more VGA for powerpoint presentations, and displayports for goddamn good monitors. HDMI is for the media consuming pleb, but hey, if you need it-there's a passthorugh for that. And yes, Thinkpads are better with linux, as every autistic fuck out there (like me here) uses one while not eating out his feet like Richard Stallman. And BTW, those $1000 thinkpads aren't worth getting, everything newer beyond t420 and x220 is a fuckin waste of money, as they don't have faster internal cpus.

first of all, he said the keyboard was exchangable.
second of all, fuck off. the 6 row layout omits the keys you never use while retaining the ones you do in more meaningful positions. SysRq is where the useless fucking menu key used to be and pageup/down are where the SCROLLING KEYS (!) used to be, for gods sake, what's not to like?
>>
>>52619493
to reiterate: i do, however, agree that the old keys had slightly better tactile response. still outweighed by better layout+backlight.
>>
>>52619493
I'll tell you what. The print screen. And if you think the menu key was useless, then well, sorry pleb, I envy you're swedish minimalism on keyboard usage.

After the T61 the quality of keyboards certainly declined, but the T440p keyboard is as solid as the one in the T6x series.

I'll take Thinklight over a backlit keyboard any day. They'll never not look gaudy to me, and the backlight is only useful for seeing the keys. The Thinklight on my X220 is so bright that it illuminates the area around the laptop in addition to the keyboard.

>>

It forces a max resolution that is lower than the native resolution, wasting around half the screen space.
The various workarounds with X aren't working as it also uses that resolution in the CLI.

However a downgrade to Wheezy will fix it, just amazing that I'll ever downgrade something in GNU/Linux wonderland, I thought that'd be something left for involuntary Windows 10 users.

I'm thinking of purchasing either a t420 or a t61p to do simple work (word processing) and watch videos. I already have a desktop, but I'd like a laptop to do such things in the comfort of my bed (I have scoliosis and hate having to sit for so long). The reason I am going Thinkpad is because /tpg/ sold me on the keyboard, durability, modifiability and overall practical design.
The t61p has a nicer resolution and has cheaper listings on ebay, but it seems the screen is dimmer (I imagine I can just purchase a new CCFL).
If I do end up going for the t420, I will probably end up replacing the screen with a 1080p version.

>i7-3520m @ 3.4GHz
until it starts running too hot and has to clock down to 2.9ghz

you aren't getting a quadcore for that cheap, and the tools for the bga rework would cost at minimum hundreds of dollars.
plus it would absolutely destroy the life of that chip and anything around it.

great now it's mushy, has the same fuck tarded layout because of the bios, and you lost your backlit keys

maybe if it's just sitting there, but my x220 could never get above 6 hours of battery life actually using the thing with a 9 cell. And I doubt ivy bridge would double my performance

I got my T420 today. I took the keyboard out to replace the DIMM under it (2x4GB RAM from my old laptop).

After putting the keyboard back and tightening the screw on the back, the bottom right of the keyboard is pretty loose. If I press down on the arrow cluster and let go, the whole bottom, right corner bounces back up.

What did I screw up?

I didn't notice any movement in the keyboard before removing it, but I didn't specifically push on the arrow cluster. I assume it's supposed to be solid, yes?
>>
>>52626756
It is. There are little nubs on the bottom of the keyboard that fit down under the palmrest.

You probably didn't get the nub in that corner fitted correctly underneath it. Undo the screws for the keyboard and try again. Try slipping it in from the bottom first.

Make sure the antennas are snapped in.

Make sure your wireless card isn't in some kind of powersave mode on battery or just in general.

Try changing your router to a different channel, might be interference if other wifi devices have the same problem.

Ya know, unless it's from IBM I do not understand how anyone would willingly use a ThinkPad. From the cert fiasco to the current fw exploits to the seemingly non-stop flow of vulnerabilities that are released on a weekly basis on these machines, it's one of the more non-sensical "groups" here.

CPU is soldered. You're already guaranteed an IPS panel, so nothing to do there.

RAM (it'll take 16GB)

So I doubt this qualifies as a business laptop, but I intend to treat it as one.

I picked up a 2011 era Asus ROG laptop (G73JH) from a pawn shop for $150. Comes with a Radeon 5870, a desktop class i7, and 6 gig of memory. (Don't ask.)

Anyways, it doesn't look too tarted up like gaming laptops tend to. About the only thing questionable is a small blue light under the screen hinge, but the effect is muted and tasteful.

>>52628912

If you run Windows VMs then the more memory the better.

If you're running Linux only, 8GB is probably way more than enough.

Personally, I bumped my desktop to 32GB because I was running out of RAM while running a couple of VMs.
>>
>>52629141

I've been looking into this too.

AFAIK, mSATA is just SATA run over the PCIe bus. I don't think there's even a performance improvement. Also, I think manufacturers do a lot of dicking around with specific pin numbers, leading to incompatibilities.

m.2, which is the successor to mSATA, isn't just SATA, and should be faster.

I'm not certain about these claims, that's just how I understand it.

The T450s works essentially the same way that you're asking for. You can just put a 128 GB SSD in the M.2 (2242) slot, and then pop a 500 gig HDD in the 2.5 inch bay.

This kind of functionality is why I paid $200 more for a T450s over an X1 Carbon.

>>
>>52629434
Due to Intel related irregularities, the i7 (also of same TDP) drinks considerably more power than the i5. You'd lose a good 2 hours or so. Oh and the machine can behave erratically depending on whether the 65W (throttling) or 90W (misbehaving trackpad) brick is attached. Though I think BIOS updates fixed that
On the upside I guess, it has USB 3.0

No shit. Since when has anything ever been safe when you have physical access? I'm using a computer, not a one-time pad.

>in more ways than any other laptop being sold today, with any OS installed, BIOS pw or not.
Irrelevant. All it takes is one privilege escalation exploit. The quantity doesn't matter once it's vulnerable at all. I bet you think you're some kind of elite hacker because you think if someone hands you physical access you can break into a device? That's pretty trivial. A child could do it. Why don't you show me even one device where this isn't the case?

There's a reason server rooms are kept locked and data centers have very tight security. There's really not any way to stop someone who has physical access. It doesn't make the laptop bad, it makes you stupid for pretending this isn't the case for ANY computer. But don't mind me, troll away.

I'm pretty sure I'll be fine with that res on a 14" screen, I'm not the kind of guy who needs a 4K phone screen or shit like that.

Not sure, here in Finland I have seen T420 with dock, NVIDIA GPU and 1600*900 display go for something like 240€.

The 1600x900 screen is better but not by much. At least it has a usable resolution going for it, while the 1366x768 one is just garbage all around.

This is literally the cheapest "Buy it now" I could find, and I've been checking autions for a week and all of them go for more than 200€.
>>
>>52634247
Buy it, it's a good price and you can later upgrade something if you don't like it.

Found this, 1600x900 but uses a generic picture and gives no info about battery life.

Sorry for the language, tried to found it at ebay.co.uk but no luck.

It says there:
>Al igual que en la imagen. Tecn exacta. Por favor, tomar los datos de la descripción

AKA it's like the one in the image. Should be easy enough to send it back if it's worned out with such a statement from them.

My high school class got Lenovo ThinkPad L420. They're pieces of shit. Can barely process Illustrator at times.

Fine enough, just asked the seller about battery life time. They also offer 12 months warranty.

If the battery is any good I'll go for this one. I haven't used a laptop in my life but if you guys say 1600x900 is noticeable over 1366x768 I'll go for it.

Could you guys recommend me decent business laptop but slimmer than old thinkpads? What do you think about dell latitude E6430U?

What is the cheapest Thinkpad I can get that has an HDMI port on it? I want to watch movies and Chinese Cartoons on my TV with it.

None have hdmi, the t500 has a displayport that exports video and sound. Buy a displayport to hdmi converter dongle on eBay for a few dollars. An alternative would be to buy a chromecast and stream it from your current laptop
>>
>>52635043
None of them have HDMI except maybe the newest models, which are by no means cheap. Just get a Displayport to HDMI adapter.

Not the 2014 models, unless you feel like replacing that awful clackpad.

I just listed the options dumbass.

He asked for recommendations, and the T/X/X1 2014 models should not be recommended unless he feels like modding them.

Is it possible (as in easy to find parts that fit) to upgrade the X1 Carbon 2015 from that 1080p TN panel to an IPS panel, without exchanging the entire assembly for the touch QHD one?

Do I need to be paranoid if I buy a used thinkpad with that vPro shit? I mean, they can disable your PC remotely and fuck you over, without even being connected to the internet.

How much should a used up x220 i5 tablet be worth. Has no OS nor the stylus.

get an x200 and libreboot it and live the botnet-free life

Now you tell me if that's dollars, euros, yen, marks, goats, shekels, etc. depending on how much they sell for wherever you are.
