I will be getting my first Apple Computer in May.
>should I use the iMac 2013 21.5-inch or the 12-inch Macbook
iMac: Processing Power, Simplicity in Design but will get a update right after I purchase it.
12-inch Macbook: Shit processor, cuteness, won't update right after I purchase it.
>Should I get the iMac or 12-inch Macbook.
I am using this computer very lightly so it may tolerate what I do on a daily basis.

>>
>>47542278
This, 13 inch rMBP
>>
>>47542278
It's good to see people are starting to recognize that the Macbook is an alternative to the iPad. There were people on this board evaluating the Macbook compared to the rMBP and similar machines and patting themselves on the backs when they felt content making the case that it wasn't as good. It's clearly not for those people; it's for people who looked at the iPad all this time and thought "great, but I *do* write a lot of emails and I don't like any bluetooth keyboards I've ever used [because they're almost all complete shit]".

Okay, what should I do about the new force touch trackpad. Maybe I should go about hunting for a 2014 Retina Macbook Pro.
>>
>>47541809
Get the new Macbook. It's portable. You can take it anywhere and you can work out of any coffee shop or other open wifi access point. For that reason alone I'd go with MB.

Anandtech has a really good review of new MB and they like it.

Sounds great and how about that force touch trackpad. You have to touch it instead of slam it down. But I can fix this with a good old Mouse.

To your point, 12-inch Macbook do have a cute look and a 1,300 base model price tag.

>Sounds great and how about that force touch trackpad. You have to touch it instead of slam it down. But I can fix this with a good old Mouse.
that new touchpad is superior to any other touchpad. it's even in the new MBP. every review I've read of new MB says it's awesome. old touchpad was better than any other touchpad on the market and Apple upped their game yet again.

have you been to a store and tried it out yet? go try it and use it for 10 min.

get a cheap netbook or convertible tablet, much more worth your time and money
>>
Apple sells refurb'd 2014 rMBP for $1k, I'd recommend that.
>>
All the butthurt surrounding Macbooks made me look into them, and they actually seem like decent laptops, and definitely better than any of the macbook clones that keep getting recommended. The only problem is that I can't find any with with decent hard drive space, otherwise I'd probably pick one up used.

But even something as simple as using a flash drive becomes a challenge. Actually, that removes the portable advantage as well, if you have to carry around dongles.

Anyone that does more than facebook will find this frustrating.
Even if they chucked a single standard USB port like the MBA it wouldn't be so bad.

So let's keep a tally.
>performance
It is an underachiever performance wise.
>portable
Many standard operations that are non-technical (and still done if you use computers for actual work) require dongles and accessories to be carried.
>practical
See above, but remember that there is one port, so something as simple as copying a file from one flash drive to another becomes a juggling game.
>>

Most people don't use flash drives anymore. Go back to bed, grandpa.
>>

>>
>>47545865

>>
>>47545874
Have you ever been to University? Do you do business?
When I say work I don't mean 'le high school assignments' and checking mcdonalds payslips.

>>47545880
As I said
>if you use computers for actual work
Even then, many people may have a digital camera. I know many people that have things like that.

What the fuck is happening when in 2015 people are trying to convince me that USB ports are a power-user feature?
>>
>>47545895
Heh, very true.

OP: If you're the kind of user who's looking at the standard MacBook, presumably you'd also want some kind of desktop to work with as well?

Obviously I don't know what your usage is like but surely you either need a light portable or a power powerful desktop?
>>
>>47545911
Yes. Those places have things called "wifi".
>>
>>47545911
What don't you fucking understand? All I'm saying is not all people plug things into their laptop. You keep coming back with yes but other people do. No fucking shit other people do, but some people don't.
>>
>>47545920
>wifi
"Oh, anon, here is our presentation for you to present on a flash drive."
"What, you can't use one?"
"Uhh, let me just get out my computer and email it to you"
"Just give me a minute"
"Sorry it's taking so long, you know how busy the wireless is at this time of day"

Still sacraficing practicality for the sake of removing one port.

Either way, it is still a hassle compared to using a USB, which most people expect to work. That and what if it is a larger file? Large scale wireless networks and public spectrum is stretched as it is now. With every fag trying to send files over the internet it will grind to a halt.

I wouldn't brag about dropbox.
We dropped it during the middle of a group assignment because it took ages for it to recognise and sync files.

If it involves setting up an ad-hoc network, they come down hard on that stuff. Something about wireless spectrum licencing.
It's usually against most insitutions policies to use ad-hoc wireless networks. I'd check usage policies and agreements before using them.
I personally keep a cat5 handy just in case.

Comes down to either you want portability or a nice sit down computer.

I have a 27in iMac myself and live it. Wonderful computer.

I also have a macbook and macbook air. When it comes to portability I love the air. Fast for being mobile and great battery. Though both I don't like using as a sit down computer. Nothing compares to my imacs 27 inch screen and power.

Only the base dual core 21in iMac has full fledge laptop hardware.

The rest of the 21's and 27's all have desktop i5's and i7's.

A lot of my work these days is actually done remotely, so I thought about using a Macbook as a thin client, but I still do a lot of tinkering on my own machine (testing scripts and stuff on my own computer with a smaller representative dataset), so I don't think I could really drop down from a rMBP yet.

I'm happy with my 15" rMBP and I'll probably get the next one when it comes out, but I was tempted by the 13" rMBP that recently came out. I suspect (read: hope) that whatever quirks may have emerged in the Force Touchpad from the Macbook and 13" rMBP releases will have been ironed out in the 15" rMBP.

>>
>>47546370
It's because of the limited channels they can use for running wireless networks.
A large scale campus wide wireless network requires channel co-ordination to avoid interferance.

People who are "muh wireless don't need no cords" take for granted the technical challenge behind providing their access.

If it was a free for all and each of the hundreds of routers ran on whatever it wanted and people brang their own devices, you wouldn't be able to use wireless on campus at all. Each device would jam each other.

>how could they possibly scan the whole campus
I recall them mentioning how they have a few computers with software that logs all wireless in its range.
It wouldn't be physically the whole campus, but by people volume it would be most of it.

OS X is a great OS, I use it on the computers it was made for. Also I collect non-x86 computers, most of the Macs are 68k or PowerPC

You mean the one that costs 1000 bucks?
The one with a shitty ULV cpu with a 1,4 GHz base clock speed?
The one with a 500GB 5400 RPM 2,5" HDD?
The one that would get beaten in speed by a computer I could build for 400 bucks, then 150 bucks more for a nice IPS monitor?
That truly is a great deal!

>27 inch quadcore
It better be good for the TWO AND A HALF THOUSAND DOLLAR price tag.

So much this.

I have friends who own: $7000+ in RC cars, $10,000+ in camera equipment, $5,000+ in scuba gear etc. They have no delusions about being wealthy and they know it.

Macpoors with their entire networth in their macbooks and iToys thinking they're wealthy is fucking hilarious.

I fell for the Thinkpad meme once. Almost died from the eye cancer of the 1280x800 TN panel and the ear cancer from having to hear the fans blaring on at full speed with only notepad open.

I'd ask you the same thing. How do you think OS X was even made? It didn't come out of thin air from the "brilliant" minds behind Apple. OS X is nothing more than an overglorified Linux distro filled with pointless shit.

You're a retard. OS X is based on Darwin, Apple's continuation of NeXTSTEP, a fork of BSD 4.3. When Apple took over NeXTSTEP they ported some FreeBSD code over for the userland and later developed launchd for the init system, among various other changes they've made.
>>
>>47546645
They don't freeze up, they take the abuse of people using them daily for over 10 years, most of the thinkpad I've picked up from flea markets have worked fine as well.

It's also water resistant which is nice.

>>
>>47546671
XP stopped getting security updates, didn't it? How do they keep it secure? Seriously.

I could understand a really barebones Linux installation, but what's the idea of giving people a full OS like Windows, especially if they're going to stick with one released close to 14 or 15 years ago?

>>
>>47546668

Okay, it was FreeBSD, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not a good fucking OS to begin with. There's nothing fucking revolutionary about it.
>>
>>47546531
They're buying the fucking product, not apple stock. Consumers don't care when a company "crashes"*, they just want their shiny shit.

Although if apple crashes we're in for another recession.

They won't suddenly stop making products or terminate support. When they do decline it will seem gradual to the average macfag, and they'll say "back in my days..."
>>
>>47546722
>>47546692
No, it wasn't FreeBSD, it is NeXTSTEP (well Darwin) with a few FreeBSD components. What you're doing is like saying a Linux distro including OpenSSH is OpenBSD. I never said there was anything revolutionary about it, just that it is not a Linux distro (nor is it FreeBSD based)

The process of getting employed in corporate as a dev is ridiculously, insanely hard and they have heaps of talent locked up there in golden handcuffs. Most of my most successful dev friends have been recruited to there from outside the US. The company isn't going anywhere soon

Apple's crash would only be a disaster if people replaced buying iPads with buying nothing. An absolute shrinkage of the economy would be a disaster. Shifting of consumption from faggot company A to faggot company B doesn't really have a huge negative on the economy except for incidental shifts in wealth (e.g. if every Apple consumer started buying Lenovo shit in equal magnitudes of money, Taiwan would see an economic growth because the money that was going to Apple corporate would instead go to Lenovo. But that wouldn't be THAT enormous; Apple only employs so many thousands of people in SV. And there aren't that many dependencies. The rest of SV would move forward.

Not like if Google went under, or Facebook, to an extent.
>>
Apple employs 41k people in Cupertino, it would destroy the economy of that suburb for starters.
>>
>>47546773
Actually, without being specific to only apple, what happens if a big company suddenly stops supporting internet dependant devices?
Like Microsoft shuts down 365 servers or Apple kills iPhone services because they can't pay the bills?
>>
>>47546811
They would probably sell off the rights to those products in an attempt to pay off debts and the services would be carried on by the new owners
>>
i-is it true guys?

>>47546777
I'm trying to think of a scenario where apple will crash (am I correct that "crash" means decline over short term?), where the other tech and manufacturer companies aren't too affected.

It would have to be a company specific event like >>47546753
says. Or some incredible internet meme faggotry. Otherwise I imagine the whole NASDAQ will be declining.

>>47546811
>can't pay the bills
You should look at how much cash they're sitting on.
If for some reason they shut it down.. it will just stop working.

I can't. That is why I mentioned it.

Look at Enron, and what they did.
They claimed to be worth a whole bunch, but were actually never out of the red.

A lot of developers use Apple products because that is where the common market is, and web-development because they have a good battery life for the money they ask compared to other who has less or put fake battery hours, yes there are regular laptop that has similar battery life but they are usually underpowered even more or weighs a ton.

In my opinion

Oh I see what you mean. Auditing is a tad bit better after SOX but there will always be fraud, but not every company will be overstated like Enron (a stock price could be overpriced but that's another story). The only way to protect yourself is to accept the risk and diversify your holdings (just buy an index fund).
>>
>>47546837
You're using "crash" correctly. The only way Apple could "crash" and other companies not benefit in any appreciable way would be if there was a macroeconomic event, like a second blow recession (something I don't think we've ever seen before; usually we just hit rock bottom and then start climbing out slowly as we've been doing for the past few years).

Enron wasn't really a crash per se. It was more like a revelation of massive fraud. Certainly anything is possible, but nothing about Apple's numbers are even remotely suspicious. It would be like finding out that for the past few years Washington DC has just been a crater and nobody had bothered to check and tell the rest of the world.

Apple employs a fractional amount of workers in Silicon Valley. Those that would get laid off would certainly find work at Tesla, Facebook, Twitter, etc... to say nothing of those that might go to Microsoft, Amazon, and elsewhere outside of the bay area.

It'd be bad if the company just shuttered overnight, but I don't think it would destroy the economy.

The only time I find myself using a flash drive is when I'm booting up a live CD.

Since I get free unlimited google drive space from my university, I use google docs to write essays, and my university has wifi everywhere I don't really need flash drives that much anymore. It's amazing how popular cloud storage is now from just a few years ago.
