SSDs are only useful for use as an OS drive unless you're a retard with more money than sense.

Solid State is more reliable than spinning disks nowadays.

That's why he instead waits for them to become affordable you sperg.

what the fuck is a SKU, the storage keeping unit? that's not part of the name lmao

also why not just get an 850 Evo 1TB, sure you may argue that the pro has a lot more durability but it's like $180 cheaper

that literally answers nothing, perhaps because you actually fucked the name up but refuse to admit that you did, because that makes you less than an 8 year old.

When I can get a 1TB SSD for the same as a 2~3TB HDD I'll think about it.

Currently good 120GB SSDs are still more expensive than 2TB HDDs. Cheap 120gb SSDs are about the same price bracket as 1TB HDDs

Why would you risk inscribing the binary on tablets? If someone gets that stone tablet, they got ur midget pron
>>
>>47514538
Out of curiosity: What exactly would you do with a 1 TB SSD? For stuff like storing huge amounts of data like movies and so on it doesn't really provide any benefit, so the cheaper HDDs will probably remain the more sensible choice.

Unless you want a completely silent machine I guess, in that case I could see why you'd want one.
>>
>>47516514
Storing large amounts of images and make them easily accessible anytime without lagging the whole system. Maybe several VMs or video editing too. Eitherway they're beneficial to laptops no matter what size the SSD is.

With video games 50+GB these days. If you want modern games and have them installed on an SSD you really do need a large SSD.
>>
>>47516514
Silence. My hard drive is the loudest component in my system by a distance, even at idle. Spinning it down when not in use works, but Windows randomly accesses it and wakes it up all the fucking time.

OK since this is an ssd thread
Why the fuck is wrong with the ssd I got?
I got the Samsung 850 Evo 120gb SSD for windows and the program. How come Windows freezes randomly all the time? I'm sure the SSD is plugged in correctly. It usually works fine the first boot after installation but after that when I boot up my computer it constantly freezes. Sometimes the os can't be detected on the SSD probably because of freezing during a installation. I have tried Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. For multiple years, windows has work fine installed on a HDD, just a bit slower due to read and write. Did I get a faulty drive? I have googled everywhere and I couldn't find a solution for amd computers or without sacrificing the ssd speed by changing to ide mode. Did I get a faulty drive? I still have 27 days to return the drive.
>>
>>47516673
>stop liking what I don't like
You have all the quentin pics saved to your computer.
>>
>>47516695
Start up from off and standby is significantly faster. I was always first in BF4 maps until the new deployment system was put in place. You have to benchmark by timing the SSD vs the HDD. I know an SSD is overkill, still I see no reason for at least a 7200RPM drive in it. The stock is 5400rpm
>>
>>47516759
Did you install Windows on the SSD or clone the drive? Also check to see that your drive is running in AHCI mode, you'll find that in the BIOS.

>>47516785
Interesting, I looked into putting an SSD in my old PS3 but it would have been bottlenecked by the SATA throughput and haven't thought about it since.

Is installing things faster?
>>
>>47516830
Every time I installed it on the ssd, it was on ahci mode.
>>
>>47516759
Try another cable and port.
>>
>>47514554
it's getting cheaper though, 4 years maybe?
>>
>>47516556
My mfw folder is 840GB
>>
>>47516867
Tried all 3 sata ports that I have. Same problem. Could it really be the cable? I don't see how a cable would make it freeze randomly for a random amount of times.
>>
>>47516830
Yes installations are faster, doesn't help with patches that need downloading obviously.
>>
>>47516902
It's entirely plausible. I once encountered a problem that was causing one of my drives to write incredibly slowly. It ended up being a dodgy SATA cable causing it.

>>47516915
I might be tempted to get one then, although I'll have to check to see just how much space my installed games are eating up, what capacity SSD did you go for?
>>
>>47516935
Should I also swap the drive for a 120gb Kingston HyperX SSD? It's around the same price and read and write speeds. I have trust issues with Samsung because of how crappy their phones are.

I've gotten my hand on a SSD
I saw on multiple websites that indexation should be disabled because the SSD is fast enough to find the files

Is it true? Should i disable indexation?
>>
>>47517207
i meant disk indexing
>>
>>47517207
Yes, they're fast enough on their own, indexation is just needless write cycles on your SSD
>>
>>47517192
I've did that 6 times.
>>
>>47517149
No, do some further diagnostics. Does the drive behave poorly on your motherboard? It could be a port, a cable, anything. It could end up being something you overlooked previously.

My advice to you would be to do the following:
- Benchmark the drive
- Try each port and check the controller for each port
- Try a different SATA cable
- Make sure it's not a partition alignment issue, you can use something like Paragon Alignment Tool (pirate it)
It seems as if it could be a hardware issue considering the multiple times you've installed the OS. Don't underestimate the crappiness of Windows though.

>>47517252
>indexation is just needless write cycles on your SSD
Surely indexing prevents needless write cycles?
>>
>>47516785
Doesn't matter since PS4 uses SATA 2 connector lel. SSDs are almost useless in a console m8
>>
>>47516514
>Out of curiosity: What exactly would you do with a 1 TB SSD?

Put it in a notebook?

>you'll never need more than 256gb of disk storage
>>
>>47514639
I use a 240gb and a 120gb for everything except for storage. I have a 1.5tb for that.

It makes my games load up in no time at all. Path of Exile has notoriously long loading times. With a SSD I got rid of loading issues.
>>
>>47514584
Ok, I've read a bit about memristors, and there is aguy claiming we'll have 100 TB memristor drives in some years. How much is 100 TB in hours of 32K resolution chinese cartoons?

Is it true that a memristor drive can be used as storage, memory and CPU cache simultaneously?
>>
>>47514639
SSDs are also insanely useful storing data for high traffic servers (databases in particular) or VM disk images for hypervisors, but most of /g/ doesn't have to deal with that.
>>
>>47520572
A program I used only found drivers for the sata controller, but it didn't change a thing. Still freezing.
>>
>>47522163

Yeah, they're basically extremely fast, non volatile memory cells. Thought making a system where the CPU cache IS the system memory AND your HDD would require a significant change in the functioning of current operating systems.

They'll most likely merge the CPU cache with the RAM so that there'll be practically gigabytes of cache on the CPU, and then replace SSDs with memristor modules that go in the RAM slots but act as your local storage.
>>
>>47517299
Benchmarks are fine. Normal speed (well half because my motherboard only supports sata 2)
Tried every sata port, Same problem. The HDD never had any problems like this when windows was installed on it. Checked speccy, nothing's going past 30 C.

Yes, in theory. Memristors can hold state, and perform logic. You could have part of an array dedicated to logic while others were acting as system cache and storage.
HP's next server platform is update of their Moonshot platform. Its based on dense many cores approach, likely with Atom chips, but it'll be running a new OS, and it will be using Memristors for system memory and storage. That and the Memristor banks are connected to the main board through an optical interconnect which is blazingly fast and has tons of bandwidth.
